Effects of yearling, juvenile and adult survival on reef manta ray (Manta alfredi) demography Isabel M. The trade in manta ray gill plates has considerably increased over the last two decades. The resulting increases in ray mortality, in addition to mortality caused by by-catch, has caused many ray populations to decrease in size. The aim of this study was to ascertain how yearling and juvenile growth and survival, and adult survival and reproduction affect reef manta ray (Manta alfredi) population change, to increase our understanding of manta ray demography and thereby improve conservation research and measures for these fish. Methods. We developed a population projection model for reef manta rays, and used published life history data on yearling and juvenile growth and adult reproduction to parameterise the model. Because little is known about reef manta ray yearling and juvenile survival, we conducted our analyses using a range of plausible survival rate values for yearlings, juveniles and adults. Results. The model accurately captured observed variation in population growth rate, lifetime reproductive success and cohort generation time in different reef manta ray populations. Our demographic analyses revealed a range of population consequences in response to variation in demographic rates. For example, an increase in yearling or adult survival rates always elicited greater responses in population growth rate, lifetime reproductive success and cohort generation time than the same increase in juvenile Submitted 7 November 2015 survival rate. -

Your tour starts in Pretoria, South Africa’s administrative capital. Close enough to Johannesburg to almost be considered a suburb, Pretoria is known as the Jacaranda City, with purple blossoms covering the streets in October each year. Pretoria boasts many sights of interest – such as the 10m bronze statue of Nelson Mandela standing beside the historic Union Buildings. -

Nele De Meester ([email protected]) Number of students for this internship: 2 Description of the internship: Behind the morphological similarity of many species, a hidden genetic diversity can be found. This cryptic diversity has been well documented in the marine nematode Litoditis marina. Despite the growing knowledge about this cryptic diversity, little is known about the ecology of the different cryptic species. Differences in environmental preferences, decomposition processes, dispersal capacities and competition abilities will be tested on four cryptic species (Pm I, Pm II, Pm III and Pm IV) in different experiments. Studying the interactions between different cryptic species is realised by creating populations where several cryptic species are present. To analyse these populations, genetic methods are necessary. This assignment will consist almost exclusively of molecular work (preparation for DNA extraction, DNA extractions and qPCR analysis) in which analyses are performed to discriminate the different cryptic species. Doris ananas sp. nov. has previously been recorded from South Africa to Tanzania. The studied specimens were from the sub-tropical waters of southern Mozambique, from 10 to 40m deep and are frequently associated with yellow sponges. The new species is character- ized by having several conical simple small tubercles surrounding each large tubercle. The integument is yellow and the top of the tubercles are pigmented in brown or black. This species distinguishes from other described taxa on both external and internal characteristics explored herein, mainly in the reproductive system, with the presence of two bags with internal spines annexed to the vagina. These habitats provide refuge for a great variety of plant and animal species. Over 180 species of birds, 45 species of reptiles, the dugong, four turtle species, five dolphin species, three whale species, four shark species and 2000 species of fish have been recorded here. Bazaruto also has the largest and possibly last viable dugong population in the WIO, dependent on the abundant seagrass meadows between the islands and the coast. The area has populations of six species of bird that exceed 1% of the global population for the species. It is also known for its complex of coral communities with six endemic gastropod mollusc species. Location The site is located in Inhambane Province in the southern part of Mozambique, stretching from the Bazaruto archipelago in the north, to the Tofo peninsula in the south. The Bazaruto barrier island archipelago comprises a chain of five islands extending ~70 km north of the mainland peninsula of Cabo São Sebastião, and up to 20 km off the coast. -

Scuba diving tourism has become one of the fastest growing markets for special interest tourism in the world. Coral degradation and species disappearance poses a great risk for livelihoods in areas where SCUBA diving tourism is the main economic driver. Praia do Tofo emerged as a diving destination thanks to the year round presence of captivating marine mega fauna species: manta rays and whale sharks. Concerns have surfaced in recent years because of the degradation of the reefs around the popular dive sites and because the sightings of the mega fauna species has decreased radically. -

This study assesses for the first time the ichthyofaunal diversity of the seas 30 around Praia do Tofo and Praia da Barra. Methods involved underwater observations during 31 recreational dives between February and September 2016, and the use of photographic 32 records from 2015. A total of 353 species, representing 79 families, were recorded from 16 33 patch reefs in the region. -
