Page 1 Website:http://www.whitlockfamilyassociation.com The past few months have been as hectic as ever. The main issue being the website. Hopefully most of the bugs have been worked out and some of the great features of the website are now working well.

I am particularly happy with the search feature for the Data Index. You can now search for any name and then sort by any of the fields both A-Z and Z-A (by clicking it a second time). If I am looking for a John Whitlock who married an can first search for “John” and then sort the “R1 First” column to group all the Elizabeths together. If I am looking for John Whitlocks from Pitton, Wiltshire, I first search for “John” and then sort by the “town” column to group all the Pitton entries together.

There is new information being received and catalogued constantly. Unfortunately it is only practical to update the Website periodically. I have not set a routine for this but hopefully more often than once a year.

I still have to complete the index to the Newsletter articles section of the website. I have done to the “Whitlock” section but still have quite a bit to do as the vast majority are “Whitlocks”.

One huge job that has now been completed is to set up separate files for all the Xmiscellaneous items. This is now finished, although I still have to go through the whole file and look for a few missing items and add them.

I have noticed that some the pictures will not open because they are in pdf format instead of jpg. If you have trouble downloading a picture you can change the file type at the end of url line at the top of your screen. Just change it from jpg to pdf and try again. If that does not get results, email me and will forward the picture you want directly to you.

I just finished teaching a six week course in Genealogy at the local Elder College and I used the Website a lot as a teaching tool. One thing I have added is some useful websites under the “Links” section. Hopefully these will be of use to other researchers as well.

I continue to work my way through the June 2010 disk from Lawrence Otis and still have a ways to go yet. The huge volume of certificate copies that Lawrence has sent in is staggering. I have over 300 that have not been shown in the Newsletter yet and it will take me several issues to show them all. I likely have another 100 to catalogue still. Each has to be listed, cross-referenced and in most cases a chart and or family card has to be updated with the new information. A slow process but the addition of so much original documentation to our files is invaluable. With over 2900 on file, our Certificate collection is fast becoming great research tool.

I was very pleased to find certificates in the collection for descendants of Sarah Jane Whitlock who married Charles Crichton in 1876. My great grandfather, Frederick Whitlock had 8 brothers and one sister, Sarah Jane (Whitlock) Crichton. To this point I knew of no Crichton children and now know there were at least two who married.

Other highlights in this issue include some great photographs from Frank Dickson (PH1173-PH1181) relating to the Whitlocks of Hartlepool, Durham and some very interesting settlement and poor law documents (R2972-R2974) from Eric Whitlock. I was very pleased to receive transcripts of the wills of William & Mary (Whitlock) Harmer (R2977) from Michael Harmer. Mary (Whitlock) Harmer was a granddaughter of (1605-1675) and we did not have much information on her.

I have been enjoying my correspondence with Penny Power who descends from a London family I have had in the files since the 1970's and she is the first descendant to contact us. The family spent a lot time in India and it has been difficult to piece together but I think they connect to the Chelsea family that descends from William & Charlotte (Phillips) Whitlock who were married in 1809. Penny’s Main Line is included in this issue of the Newsletter.

I have had some disturbing news regarding the “Spy House Museum” in Monmouth Co., New Jersey. The Monmouth County Park authority that now controls the site has removed all reference to Thomas Whitlock from the signs in front of the house. Thomas Whitlock was the first European settler in this region and it was thought his cabin built in the 1660's was part of the current structure. The website for Monmouth Parks now states the house dates from the early 1700's and no reference to Thomas Whitlock’s cabin is mentioned. I wrote to determine what has transpired and why the changes have been made to the history of the house. As I suspected, during the recent renovations, the expert who was consulted, advised that none of structure dates from before the 1700's. It appears that Thomas Whitlocks cabin no longer exists and the building dates from after the time Thomas lived there (he died in 1703). I have been assured by the staff that Thomas Whitlock’s contribution will be well documented in the material to eventually be on display at the property and in any future literature about the early history of Monmouth Co.

In the “it’s a small world” category, while I was cataloguing the latest stack of certificates received from Lawrence Otis I notice one from my own family (WHITLOCK01 family) that had connections to the WHITLOCK61 family. The marriage certificate for Thomas Stanley Wenman and Elsie Victoria Stotts showed that his mother was a Whitlock. In checking my files I noticed she was Louise Whitlock who married Joseph Wenman. Louise shows on the WHITLOCK 61 chart, the daughter of George & Sophia Ann (Eynon) Whitlock who were married in Lambeth, Surrey in 1853. Elsie Victoria Stotts was the granddaughter of Dewitt Stotts and Harriett Whitlock who was born in 1826 in Langtree, Devon the daughter of Peter Whitlock and Elizabeth Isaac.

Enclosed is the annual statement for the Whitlock Family Association. The bad news is that the new website was fairly expensive to have written and there will be ongoing costs to maintain it. Hopefully we will receive donations from time to time from persons pleased with the increased access to our research but the lions share of costs will still have be covered from subscriptions to the Newsletter. The cost of mailing has increased again and the recent changes in currency rates has reduced our net revenues as well. The result is I feel I must raise subscription rates to help defray these costs. It will take us a few years to get out of debt but hopefully subscribers will be generous and renew for another year. I have several prepaid subscriptions for 2011 which will remain at the old rate. The new rate will be $20 a year with the rate outside North America rising to $25 (UK £13) with the Australian (A$21) and New Zealand (NZ$27) remaining unchanged due to increased currency values in those countries.

I hope you continue to enjoy the Newsletters. The first issue was December 1981 so this issue completes 30 years of writing them!! I remain constantly amazed that you subscribers and researchers provide me with an endless supply of great material for them. My thanks for another great year and I wish everyone well for the Holiday Season and the coming New Year.

Rob is now retired and looking to do more Whitlock Family research. I suggested he might like to take on the medieval families. We have a fairly large collection of miscellaneous entries from the 1200's to 1538. He thought that might be interesting and I suggested he start with William Whitlock of Calais as I think he might have connection to Rob’s family.

There are several entries for William Whitlocks for the 1400's in our files, and while they are likely several different persons, it will be interesting to see what Rob can uncover about each of them.

12. Letter from Jim Whitelock Dd Aug.13,1987 I will move a bit further afield now. Whilst I was in Exeter I came across a record containing the medieval Council of Exeter... The Mayor’s Rolls state that William Whitlock was elected councillor for the years 1495,1496,1497,1498 & 1499 and the receivers rolls record that William Whitlock was appointed Receiver of the Corporations monies (Taxes, rates etc) for the same years.

------

I think it is fairly clear that these entries relate to two or more William Whitlocks. William Whitlock who shows in Calais, France from as early as 1423 appears to have distinguished himself and by 1451 is shown as a nobleman with Margaret, his wife; “late lieutenant” of Lord Stourton by 1459; and Mayor of Calais by 1466. The entry for 1466 may be indicating that William had died by then.

The William Whitlock of Exeter appears quite separate. He was apprenticed as a Saddler and is referred in several documents as a Saddler. He was also too young to have been in France in the 1450's as he was only apprenticed in 1473 when he was likely about 13.

There was some speculation that the Whitlocks of Warkleigh descend from this Exeter, Devon family but nothing has been found that proves it one way or the other.

Hopefully we can uncover additional records that will enable us to determine how these William Whitlocks fit into the known families. It is not clear if William of Calais returned to England and the reference to a William Whitlock who died in Flanders in 1520 seems too late.

As the Pre1538 file printed in the June 2010 issue shows, we have quite of bit of information for the 1200- 1500's. We wish Robert success in working on these records and look forward to seeing what he can uncover or connect together.

Frederick’s mother was Mary Ann Whitlock who had banns published for her marriage to Thomas Collins in July 1821 in Aylesbury, Buckinghamshire. While no marriage appears to have taken place, it is possible that Thomas Collins was Frederick’s father. Mary Ann’s parents were Thomas Whitlark & Sarah Lester who were married August 7, 1792 at Newport Pagnell, Buckinghamshire. Mary Ann’s family can be traced back to Abraham Whitelark & Margaret Harney who were married in Wavendon, Buckinghamshire February 8, 1726. In the 1700's the family is shown in the registers as Quakers.

Frederick was a chimney sweep, he and Jane had three children but only one survived childhood, a daughter Mary Anne. Mary Anne Whitlock was married to Joseph Keech April 11, 1864 at St.Mary Magdalen, Bermondsey, London and the family eventually emigrated to Canada. They show in the 1871 census for Vaughan, West York Co., Ontario. Frederick and Jane are living next door. The information sent in by Lawrence Otis shows many certificates for the Keech family members in Toronto and while the Keech family appears to have remained in Canada, Frederick and Jane returned to England.

Frederick and Jane show in the 1891 census for Wavendon, Buckinghamshire.

LAMBERT LAFAYETTE WHITLOCK FAMILY BIBLE 1865 Dede Green posted an interesting item on GenForum regarding a Whitlock family Bible for sale on eBay. The Bible was printed in 1865 and a picture of the “Deaths” page showed “Lambert L. Whitlock died January 4, 1905". This was enough information to determine that the Bible once belonged to Lambert Lafayette Whitlock born in Hardeman Co., Tennessee April 23,1832. He married Mary Jane Harkness (1832-1890) March 29, 1857 in Greene Co., Missouri. Other entries shown in the Bible included Mary Jane Whitlock died August 30,1890 and their son Finis E. Whitlock died June 24,1900.

Lambert Lafayette Whitlock was the son of Thomas Jefferson Whitlock and Elizabeth Ann Montgomery who were married July 28, 1831 in Missouri. (They were divorced in 1855) On March 6, 1856 Thomas Jefferson Whitlock married as his second wife Mary F. (McCoin) Appleby.

There were other deaths listed for persons we do not show on the WHITLOCK25 chart. Other deaths include Robert Williamson Mooldand?? Whitlock died July 6, 1865, George Montgomery Whitlock died July 7, 1865 and Thomas James Whitlock died October 16, 1866.

I have written to the seller, Michael Taylor of Taylor’s Orphanbooks.com and advised him I will place an article about this Bible in our Newsletter. I have also requested copies of the “Births” and “Marriages” pages of the Bible if he is willing to pass those along to us.

Anyone interested in this Bible can find it by going to http://genforum.genealogy.com/whitlock/ or by going directly to eBay. The seller is asking $149.99 for this book.

WHITELOCKE PAPERS AT LONGLEAT, WILTSHIRE We have known for some years that the Marquis of Bath has a huge collection of Bulstrode Whitelocke’s papers at Longleat House in Wiltshire. The collection has been microfilmed and is available on 22 rolls of film. The problem has been to get access to these films and in particular the index that describes what is on each film. I was therefore very pleased to receive an item from Vicky House recently (R2998) that is described as: “Calendar of Papers of Sir James Whitelocke Knt., a Judge of the King’s Bench from 1624 to 1632, and of his son Bulstrode Whitelocke One of the Commissioners of the Great Seal of the Commonwealth, and Ambassador to Queen Christina of Sweden.” While much of the material is legal documents relating to their careers as lawyers, including many international treaty documents between England and Russia, Sweden and Poland, there is quite a few references to family matters. I have only been through a small portion of the calendar so far.

Some items from this collection that caught my attention include: [Comments in brackets are mine]

Volume 1 23. Articles of agreement between Cicell Bulstrode widow of Edward Bulstrode, of Hedgely Bulstrode co. Bucks, and Henry Bulstrode son and heir of the said Edward, of the one part, and James Whitelocke, of the Middle Temple, London, of the other part, executed previous to the marriage of the said James Whitelock to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of the said Cicell Bulstrode. (Signed by Cicell and Henry Bulstrode.); 1 September 1602, f.37. [James Whitlock and Elizabeth Bulstrode were married at Beaconsfield, Buckinghamshire September 9, 1602]

31.William Branston to Capt. [Richard] Whitelocke, at his lodgings at Tower Hill, at Mrs Mercam’s house. Prays him to write to his brother James Whitelocke the counsellor to move Sir John Croke to accept common bail for George Cely who is arrested for debt. Aldergate Street, 7 November 1607, f.50. Endorsed [This is likely Edmund Whitlock not Richard]

46. The Council to the Warden of the Fleet. Warrant to receive James Whitelocke into his custody. (Copy); Whitehall, 18 May 1613, f.166.

47. The same to the same. Warrant for the liberation of James Whitelock. (Copy); Greenwich, 13 June 1613, f. 167.

Volume 2 46. 1 May 1623, f.87. 47. Bond of Sir James Whitelocke, Henry Bulstrode and Edward Bulstrode to Sir Roger Mostyn for £2000.[Sir Roger Mostyn & Elizabeth Whitlock were married at Stanton Lacy, Shopshire May 24, 1623 - Queen Elizabeth II is a descendant of this marriage]

Volume 3 89. Bond, Bulstrode Whitelocke to Cecilia Whitelocke his sister for £200. (Draft in the handwriting of Bulstrode Whitelocke, and corrected by Sir James)

Volume 4 19. Articles of agreement between Sir James Whitelocke, one of the Justices of the Pleas before the King to be holden of the one part, and Sir John Garrard, of

I am looking forward to going through the rest of the 30 volumes of material to see what additional information it yields. This family is detailed on our WHITLOCK.02H chart.
