ARAB IN AMERICA SUMMIT STAFF Alexis Arambula is in her third semester at Grossmont and first semester writing for The Summit. Her current focus is journalism, but Alexis would also like to go into the public relations field. She is a “makeup junkie,” Alexis loves watching makeup tutorials in her spare time and spending time with family and friends. She hopes to someday work for a big magazine or company in New York City. A publication of Grossmont College’s Media Communications Department. Octavius Hunter is a Flint, Mich., native and in his Vol. 42 | Issue 1 | September 2015 first semester at The Summit. He is heavily involved in the hip hop culture and is a member of a local group SUMMIT STUDENT STAFF “Militia” under Royal Empire Records. Octavius is Editor-in-Chief also a combatant U.S. Marine veteran, serving four Ashley Stout years in aviation. He loves sports, especially football and basketball, and his favorite team is University of Deputy Editor Michigan Football. Go Blue! Rodney Ousley Staff Reporters Rodney Ousley is The Summit’s deputy editor. He Alexis Arambula is a Navy vet who loves stand-up comedy, writing and the Knicks. A self-diagnosed Netflix junkie, Octavius Hunter he speaks almost entirely in movie quotes, and his Evon Qula favorite compliment is, “You have a great taste in Adviser/ Instructor: Jeanette Calo movies.” When he’s not on the couch, you can catch Rodney playing basketball or long distance running. He also makes himself laugh...a lot. GROSSMONT-CUYAMACA COMMUNITY COLLEGE DISTRICT Evon Qula is in her third semester at Grossmont 8800 Grossmont College Drive College. Her first languages are Arabic and Assyrian, El Cajon, CA 92020 and her major is mass media communication. We move upward until we land on a MARQUIS that says APPEARING TONIGHT: NWA. INT. JOE LOUIS STADIUM - NIGHT It's a packed house. Swarms of TEENAGERS from the floor to the cheap seats wait in rabid anticipation for the performers to take the stage. Small fights, like brush fires, break out here and there. We come to rest on a TEENAGER holding a sign above his head. It says "Fuck Tha Police." There's a slight bulge near the ankle of one of the pants legs. We angle up from the sneakers to see EAZY E towering above us. Eazy's 5'5" frame belies his larger than life personality. Tanji Gilliam, University of Chicago A review of the major theoretical arguments and important empirical findings relating to the influence of hip hop on the development of youth politics, particularly among U.S. African American communities. 1 Hip Hop and the Media Introduction Almost every text on hip hop culture begins with a narrative of origin. These histories typically announce that hip hop started in the late 1970s in the South Bronx, New York. Commercial recording information generally follows, with the 1979 single “Rappers Delight” by the Sugar Hill Gang proclaimed as the first hip hop release.1 Finally, some statement of impact or importance commences the author’s study. This paper seeks to identify the political ideas in hip hop broadly and in rap music in particular. The aforementioned “biographical” information for hip hop is relevant if only for its sheer irrelevance to hip hop’s contemporary existence. First, it is important to note that 2004 marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of commercial hip hop. Therefore it is necessary to contextualize hip hop’s various shifts and transmutations to the present day.
