Don’t mess with Defend Life. That’s the message the pro-life group delivered to the Maryland State Police, the town of Bel Air and the Harford County Sheriff’s Office at a July 20 press conference in Annapolis. Director Jack Ames and sev- eral attorneys put these officials on notice that Defend Life would not tolerate a repeat of last summer’s mass arrest of pro-lifers at its Face the Truth Tour stop in Bel Air. Thanks to great pro-lifers like you, our 9th Annual Maryland Face the Truth Tour was the best ever. I probably say that every year, but I honestly believe it’s true! Here are some of the reasons. • Our Co-Directors, Angela Swagler, Christendom Class of 2012, and Jon Benitez (better known as Benitez) Mount St. Mary’s Class of 2010, were both superb lead- ers. Angela, from Erie, Pennsylvania, is someone anyone would be immensely proud to have as a daughter or granddaughter. She is as sweet and polite as any young lady could possibly be, but absolutely dedicated to doing things right! One of her greatest accomplishments was recruiting our 20 member Core Team, our largest ever. Thirteen members were stu- dents and seven were adults. Incidentally, Angela Swagler was recruited to last year’s Core Team by Joanie Walsh, last year’s Assistant Director. Joanie was the heroic young lady who fear- lessly videotaped last year’s illegal arrests. We just released this amazing video which you can see by visiting www.YouTube.Com and entering Defend Life Arrest in the SEARCH BOX. Please view this amazing and revealing video and share it with your friends! Speaking of Joanie Walsh, she will be entering the Poor Clare Sisters in Al- exandria, Virginia on September 17. Benitez was equally amazing with his attention to the 101 details which are so necessary to pull off an event like our Annual Summer Truth Tour. Benitez, who lives in Gaithersburg, Maryland will be graduating from Mount Saint Mary’s this coming May with a major in Theology. Seven dif- ferent colleges were represented. Christendom College led the pack with four Core Team members, followed by Franciscan with two. Other schools included University of Delaware, Concord University, University of Richmond, Montgomery College and The Mount. Two others were home schoolers. • Another reason this was the best Truth Tour ever was 15 outstanding STOPS. Who will ever forget the nearly 100 persons at our luncheon at St. Mary’s in Hagerstown immediately after that great STOP. Con- necticut Avenue north of Chevy Chase Circle was another one of our mega stops as afternoon rush hour traffic inched by our graphic pictures of aborted babies.White Marsh Mall was the biggest and loudest STOP with 90 minutes of incessant honking thanks to the HONK FOR LIFE signs nearly every volunteer was holding. • Great publicity was another key! Bill Simpson did a phenomenal job of getting out the crowds for our 15 STOPS. Bill kept sending out high impact e-mails reminding you of our numerous stops and YOU respond- ed in great numbers! Bill also did a mind-boggling job with the media including the following: - WHAG Hagerstown – 1 interview/news spot - Hagerstown Herald Mail – 1 news story - Fox 45 Baltimore – 3 on-site spots & 2 studio spots - The Gazette – 1 news story - WBAL 11 Baltimore – 2 on-site news spots - Hanover Evening Sun - 1 news story - WJZ 13 Baltimore – 2 on-site news spots - Towson Times – 1 news story If there is a company or organization that is in need of a media pro to generate good publicity for itself, it could do no better than to utilize Bill Simpson who can be contacted at 301-300-3487 [email protected]. 8 Defend Life • July - August, 2009 9

Certainly, part of the media interest was due to the 18 illegal arrests that occurred on August 1, 2008 in Bel Air, compliments of the Maryland State Troopers who behaved like the Storm Troopers of Nazi Germany. Our arrests were completely ignored by the print media and all the TV media except Fox 45 who visited the Bel Air arrest scene with us as we relived what had happened. The Catholic Review is hereby given our First Annual Millstone Award for not only refusing to cover these abominable arrests, but later pulling a paid color ad that they had first accepted but later pulled without even calling us. Pray that now that former liberal editor,Dan Medinger, is gone, things will improve! I remember an editorial Medinger wrote way back in 1987 stating that there must be common ground between Planned Parenthood and the PRO-LIFE movement. I confronted him about this shortly after he had pulled another ad promoting a talk by Judie Brown, founder of American Life League. We received no phone call about that pulled ad either! • Another great part of our 2009 Truth Tour was our 5 outstanding luncheon speakers including Randy Terry, Monica Miller, Barry Sullivan, David Bereit, and Paul Schenck. You can obtain a copy of any of these outstanding talks by email- ing [email protected] and specifying the Truth Tour talk(s) you want us to mail you. • Another great aspect of our Truth Tour was the Center for Bioethical Reform Truth Truck that joined us all the way from Columbus, Ohio. It was driven by Jim Davis who logged 900 miles while accompany- ing us at our 15 STOPS including ones in West Virginia, Maryland, Washington, DC, and Pennsylvania. Visit www.CbrInfo.Org to find out more about the good workCBR is doing fighting abortion. Jim Davis is hereby awarded our FIRST ANNUAL HERO AWARD! • Our nearly 100 HONK FOR LIFE signs were invaluable. They were printed in black letters on yellow plastic stock. Each had DefendLife.Org on the bottom of it so there would be no question who was sponsoring this event. Our beauti- ful blue T-Shirts with huge white letters spelling PRO-LIFE were a big hit. We gave one to every participant as long as they promised to wear it publicly at least once a week Spring, Summer, and Fall. Most gladly accepted this challenge. We will be e-mailing these PRO- LIFE T-shirt recipients asking them to send us a picture of themselves and telling us briefly about one good thing that happened while wearing it. We already know of one life that was saved directly resulting from one of YOU who was wearing your PRO-LIFE T-shirt at morn- ing Mass. Wear them proudly and wonderful things are bound to happen! If you didn’t get one, simply e-mail us [email protected] with your shirt size and address and we will mail you one if you promise to wear it publicly once a week, if only for a few hours. Consider wearing it while shopping or going to the gym. Speaking of T-Shirts, we plan to wear special PRO-LIFE T-Shirts at Maryland Terrapin and Navy football games this fall. Join us in the tailgating area prior to Maryland and Navy games. See the ad for game dates and times on page 16. Also, see page 16 for the outstanding speakers we have lined up for our Fall Defend Life Lectures. As of this writing, we still have a few slots open so contact Paul Pendergast or Eilleen Miller if your parish or congregation would like to host one of these outstanding speakers. And thanks for all you do to save innocent pre-born babies from death by abortion!

Long Live Christ Our King!
