Welcome back to the New Year everyone and as usual it has started off at a hectic pace. Welcome to all the new students and parents, I hope your children have settled in well and they are keeping in contact with you. A reminder again to please keep in contact if you believe the school needs to be aware of any issues with your child. Many thanks to all the parents who turned up for the Twilight Swimming Carnival, it certainly goes to help make the event the success that it is. Also a great job by all the senior students for their in- volvement on the day and getting younger and new students involved. Its great to see their leadership at these times. Well done to all! At the end of last year Yanco Agricultural High School hosted the regional World Skills competition in Primary Industries and Hospitality. Lachlan West came first and Jack Petrucci third in Primary Industries, while Georgia Greig came second and Elizabeth Tracy came third in Hospitality. A fantastic effort by the students and congrat- ulations to their teachers as well. Lachlan and Georgia should qualify for the National Titles in Perth later this Lachlan West, Jack Petrucci, year. Georgia Greig and Elizabeth Tracy. The school has held its first Open Day for the year with 33 families turning up to hear about the school and see the facilities. This is the largest number we have had, that anyone remembers, and is a great result. Many of the families turned up after recommendations from current parents. The school does have a great name and word of mouth is a great form of advertisement. Many thanks. There are two further Open Days to be held this year. Beach Carnival and Gala day are fast approaching and thanks to all involved in the organisation of these events. A special thank you to the schools Business Services Manager, Katrina Spencer, as this is her first experience of the event and by all reports is doing a fine job of coordination. If you can make it to Beach Carnival or Gala Day at all please come along as this is one of the highlights of the school year and highly anticipated by all students and parents. A special mention to Jake Turner, Year 9, and his brother Mitchell Turner, Year 7. The boys were riding motorbikes with their friend, Archie Gay, when he took a bad tumble and the boys took care of him with some nasty injuries until help could arrive. Fantastic job boys and best wishes to Archie who is still in Hospital in Sydney. As a result of this the school will look at teaching even the younger students some basic first aid for emergencies. All senior students have a Senior First Aid Certificate and a Bronze Medallion.

Friday the 14th, what a LOVELY day to have our annual Swimming Carnival. Participation rates were again superb, and although we may not have been able fill the grandstands, we sure did make some noise cheering on our house groups. A lot of laughs were had when Mr Dixon was thrown into the pool by his Year 12 group, TWICE; but don’t worry, he was wearing his floaties.

A big thank you to all the staff members who pitched in to help everything run smoothly, and to the parents who show support year-in and year-out. I would also like to thank each student who stuck it out and stayed at the carnival until the very end. They showed great pride in their school and had the following results:.

SPORT REPORT ZONE SWIMMING CARNIVAL

On Wednesday, February 19th, we took 50 students into the Leeton Pool to participate in the Zone Swimming Carnival. It was a surprisingly cold day which meant that our Yanco students were quite hesitant to jump in the water, but once they got motivated (or forced to get in) they swam very well. Several students were in and out of the pool all day so they barely had a chance to dry off. A big congratulations to those students who went in every single race that they qualified for. They showed a great deal of pride in themselves and their school.

The following students have qualified for the Riverina Carnival on Monday March 2nd:

• Tom Bartter: 100m Butterfly, 4x50m 16 Boys Relay • Harry Bunt: 4x50m 16 Boys Relay • Matthew Chant: 50m Freestyle • Lane Doyle: 100m Backstroke, 100m Freestyle, Open Boys Medley Relay, Open Boys 4x50m Relay • Oliver Dunn: 100m Backstroke • Maddison Eade: 100m Freestyle • Audrey Exton: 16 Girls 4x50m Relay • Max Findlay: 200m Freestyle, 50m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly, 100m Breaststroke, Open Boys Medley Relay, Open Boys 4x50m Relay • Jack Hughes: 100m Backstroke, Open Boys Medley Relay, Open Boys 4x50m Relay • Eliza Kurrle: 16 Girls 4x50m Relay • Cooper Maher: 100m Breaststroke • Spencer Plane: 100m Breaststroke • Edward Stevenson: 4x50m 16 Boys Relay • Amelia Waters: 100m Freestyle • Kara Yelland: 16 Girls 4x50m Relay • Claire Gribble: 16 Girls 4x50m Relay

CHS OPEN BOYS ALAN DAVIDSON SHIELD

The Yanco Agricultural High School Open Boys Cricket team has had a successful start to their 2020 campaign. Round one of the shield was a T20 knockout between Riverina Access Partnership Schools (RAP), and Leeton High Schools.

Our first match was against RAP (six combined Riverina Central Schools) and we got off to a blistering start to the day. The boys put on 224 runs with Tom Bartter scoring a massive 159 runs from around 65 balls. His innings included 8 x 4s and 16 x 6s! 224 was always going to be a hard total to chase from 20 overs for RAP and they batted hard to be all out for 91 runs with an over remaining.

Tom Bartter The final was between Yanco and Leeton High Schools later that afternoon. YAHS batted first and put on 128 runs with some heavy hitting by Darcy Cullen late in the innings. The boys then gained some early momentum with the ball and never looked back after taking some great catches for some key early wickets. They bowled out Leeton High School for 54 runs in the 11th over with Harvey Gay taking 4 wickets and Darcy Cullen picking up 2 of his own wickets to get the man of the match honours.

YAHS will now face in the quarterfinal at a date to be decided in March. Well done boys.

Nathan Cassilles / Coordinator AGRICULTURE REPORT CANBERRA SHOW The Sheep Showstock Team, consisting of 19 students from across all year groups and 13 White Suffolks, headed to the Canberra Royal Show on the 27th of February until the 1st of March. The sheep were shown in both the open classes against some of the premier studs in NSW, collecting a few placing ribbons in a tough competition. In the schools competition, against eight other schools, students showed the young ewes and rams, picking up some placing ribbons in the rams. However, the highlight of the show for us was Yanco 190013, a young ewe sired by Farrer 170015, picking up not only the Champion Schools Ewe, but also the prestigious Supreme School Sheep of the Show. Ryan Thomas placed first in the Meat Sheep Senior Judging, whilst Rory Walsh placed fourth. Both Rory and Ryan were also success- ful in the Senior Handling competition, placing fourth and sixth out of a strong field of fifty competitors. Riley Philpott made it into the top ten in the Junior Handlers competition out of a large field of over eighty competitors. Congratulations to all students involved. IN THE NEWS

CONGRATULATIONS SARA STEVENSON YEAR 9

Sara has recently been selected as a national finalist for the Australian Galaxy Pageant. She will be representing NSW and her home town of Lockhart. The pageant runs for four days the first week of March at the Marriott Hotel and spa on the Gold Coast.

The pageant itself inspires the girls to be the best version of themselves that they can be. It challenges the girls in areas of personal development. Part of the journey is to also look beyond the pageant itself and encourages charity work. Over the summer break Sara has been supported in raising just over $1000 for Make-a-Wish Foundation, . Sara was also pictured in the Daily Advertiser and Rural Newspapers when she donated, with her parents help, a load of hay to the Riding for the Disabled in .

Sara has worked hard at this title and we wish her all the best in the upcoming finals on the Gold Coast.

Well done Sara.

Canberra this week (27/2 - 3/3). FROM THE COUNSELLOR’S DESK

Hello and welcome back for the 2020 school year. My name is Drew Sinnett and I am the newly appointed School Psychologist at Yanco Agricultural High School. I am very lucky to have gained this position, and work at YAHS four days a week. On Thursdays I travel to other small schools in the region to assist where I can. This is my first year working as a Psychologist and it is already a very rewarding experience. I grew up in the small town of Rylstone and moved to Newcastle to attend The University of Newcastle in 2015. I then attended The University of Wollongong, on a Schol- arship with the Department of Education, to gain my Masters in Professional Psychology (School Psychology) in 2019. I am excited to be a part of the YAHS community. My name is Kirsty Cochrane and I am the School Counsellor. I work on Thursdays and can be contacted through the school office for appointments or queries. This is my second year working with the staff and students at Yanco Agricultural High School. In addition to being a School Counsellor I am also an experienced teacher having worked in schools in QLD, NT and NSW. I also have a family at home with my husband, four daughters, 2 dogs and 2 cats. As School Counsellors we can perform a variety of tasks within the school how- ever we do primarily focus on counselling and assessment. We work with the Learning and Support and Wellbeing Teams to provide assessments for individ- ual students and to provide counselling sessions to support student social and emotional growth. Some of the areas for which we might talk to and work with students include difficulties with anxiety and worries, self-regulation and behaviour, social skills, learning difficulties, study skills and family and relationship concerns. We are also able to assist parents and teachers to support our students. If you feel your child would benefit from visiting with us please contact your child’s head teacher for a referral form or contact us through the school office. We look forward to working with the Yanco Agricultural High School community in 2020. Kirsty Cochrane & Drew Sinnett / School Counsellors

NATIONAL DAY OF ACTION AGAINST BULLYING. - https://bullyingnoway.gov.au/nationalday

This year we will again be participating in this day on Friday 20th March. We will hold a whole school assembly and watch a few short videos from the National Day Against Bullying website. Students will then participate in a lesson on taking a stand against bullying that is relevant to their year group. Below is a parent information card from the website that may assist in discussions with your child about being bullied or about if they see bullying occurring. If they see or are involved in any way in bullying, please remember to always have them talk with someone at school – Their Year Advisor, The Head Teachers Welfare, The Deputy Principals, The Youth Worker, The School Counsellors, their favourite teacher. There are many options for students to seek assistance. The school can’t help if we do not know about it. ADMIN INFORMATION

NOTICE TO PARENTS UPDATING DETAILS

Sadly sometimes relationships break down and the court makes orders that change the contact parents can have with their children or the role they play in making decisions about their children’s education. These can be Family Court Orders or Apprehended Violence Orders. Parents can also reach agreement about issues such as contact in a parenting plan.

If this happens it is important that you provide the school with a copy of any court orders or plan that could impact on your child’s education.

In the absence of any notification to the contrary, the school will assume that both parents continue to retain a shared and equal parental responsibility for their children and should be involved in making any decisions regarding their children’s education.

This means the school will recognise that each parent has equal duties, obligations, responsibilities and op- portunities in relation to matters involving the school.

If any changes occur in your family relationships which have the potential to impact on the relationship between the school and your family, please advise the school immediately in writing and provide a copy of any court orders that may be obtained. These orders will be stored securely and only accessed by staff who need to see them in order to plan for your children’s learning and support and related issues. SPORTING EVENTS TERM ONE If you are interested in attending any of these events in Term 1, please see Mrs Stockdale NOTE: If there is a large group attending the trials, the school might be able to provide transport. If there are limited numbers, you will need to make your own arrangements. NOTE: You must be of an elite standard in your chosen sport to attend

trials (i.e. played at a representative level).
