WWW.WINEOFTHEMONTHCLUB.COM | 1.800.949.9463 Cheap wine will not and cannot do these things. By its nature it is not pleasant to drink, hence making every sip a struggle for redemption where there is none - thus distracting the enthusiast from the original purpose of appreciating a good glass of wine. Instead of stimulating the senses, it dulls them with apprehension to take the next sip.

More to come…lots more.

June 1976 Selection of Imported Wine White Blend, 1970. Rauenthaler Steinmächer - $3.49/fifth (757 ml) A LOOK BACK AT SOME STELLAR SELECTIONS WITH ED MASCIANA I knew at first sip that this wine was special. As I became more enthralled with German wines, I came to realize that the Rauenthaler Vineyard in the Rheingau is one of the greatest vineyards in the world. It was only later that I came to find out that it wasn’t such a secret that it is one of the greatest vineyards in the world! Every wine from here is a revelation.

January 1977 Selection of Imported Wine Bordeaux, 1972. Château Cantenac-Brown - $5.99/fifth (757 ml) At this point, Bordeaux wines were becoming very popular and thus more expensive. Paul found this beauty at a price that was less than half that of the prevailing Bordeaux. It is still one of my favorites and has almost caught up in price.

Both of these wines, when featured, were not just ahead of the curve - they created the curve.

What would come to your mind if you were sitting at a café in COLOR the town of Sassenage, just southwest of Lyon, the epicurean Medium Magenta capital of , gazing at what is referred to as the French Alps and being totally taken by the beauty and splendor of it? Well, if you were Paul Kalemkiarian, President of the Wine of the Month Club, your thoughts would undoubtedly turn to NOSE wine. Cherry, Spice Paul decided to put together a series of wines that could reflect the peace and tranquility of the place from which they hail. As PALATE he soon found out, it’s easier said than done. Lilting Cherry, Because the Wine of the Month Club has connections all over Vanilla the world, we can work with the best growers and winemakers to build a vision, no matter how lofty it may be. Like fine cooking, it takes time and patience. A little of this, a little of FINISH that and eventually you find what you’re looking for. Long and Graceful For this gem, Paul found a unique Merlot and Petit Verdot blend grown in the cooler parts of Paso Robles on very dense soil. This combination of soil and climate produces smaller grapes of PAIRING delicacy and lower alcohols. In other words, tranquility. Red Meat, Game, Fowl Merlot, especially when blended with Petit Verdot, can be very imposing and most people would expect it to be so. But our selection is a gentler and finer offering that can actually CELLAR complement foods that larger wines would overpower. Lilting Now through 2022 cherries are followed by red roses, finishing with chocolate and spice that make it all work beautifully together.

It would be almost impossible to start a small, family-run COLOR winery today, considering the huge costs involved. It’s now a Pale Straw, game for billionaires. But, to many, that game can be played Greenish Tinge different ways.

Many large wine operations grow by buying up small operations NOSE and putting them into their portfolio. It’s the bigger-is-better Pineapple, Quince theory, and sometimes it works.

But, that’s not how Bill Foley works. Bill was a corporate attorney with a fierce interest in wine. The call was strong enough that PALATE he finally bought a small winery in Santa Barbara 25 years ago Peach, Apricot and kept it just as he found it: small, vibrant and respected. He slowly added others to his portfolio, and today he owns 25 properties around the world. FINISH Discoveries is one of those properties and it exists, as do the rest in the family, as a self-sustained operation that values its Peach, Honeysuckle roots as well the environment. Every winery in the Foley empire is known for quality before anything else and Discoveries is no exception. PAIRING Seafood, Vegetarian Pinot Grigio didn’t exist in California 25 years ago. The grape was grown for winemaking in Italy as well as in Alsace, where it was called Pinot Gris. It took California a while to catch on, but it finally did, and this marvel is a perfect rendition of the grape. Winemaker Adam LaZarre probably puts more mileage on COLOR his car than most people. He and his wife, Angie, run LaZarre Wines in Paso Robles, where they create a mere 1,200 cases a Medium Magenta year of superbly crafted offerings from choice vineyards up and down the state of California.

Adam also owns a crush facility in Monterey and another NOSE winery with a bottling line in Sonoma. The amount of back Strawberry, Cedar and forth driving must be dizzying.

But, when you’re a perfectionist and the final product is your only goal, nothing gets in your way. The Sonoma facility is aptly PALATE named Wine Hooligans, a tribute to the tomfoolery that not Extracted Berry, only got them into the wine business, but seems to keep them Vanilla there and never let go.

This bit of hooliganism is 100% Zinfandel from three diverse, FINISH but pronounced, areas in California: 65% Lodi, 22% Paso Robles Long Berry, Spice and 13% Dry Creek Valley. The blend was aged 18 months in American oak.

The Lodi Zin gives the finished wine its boldness and juicy PAIRING flavors of black cherry, strawberry and plum; the Paso fruit adds Red Meat, Game lushness; and the Dry Creek the bestows a piquant finish. The prolonged oak aging softens the tannins, but not too much, and adds the cigar and cedar elements - along with CELLAR spice and vanilla - to bring it all together. Now through 2026 Piledriver is an apt name, as it is big and bold. Yet the quality of this wine maintains the integrity of the distinct soils from which it came. Santiago Achurra Larraín founded his vineyard, Viña Requingua, COLOR in 1961, some 3,000 feet above sea level in Chile’s Central Valley. Today, the second generation of the family is working together Very Pale Straw to continue creating outstanding wines.

The grapes for our selection were sourced just west of the Andes Mountains, in Chile’s Central Valley. As in Argentina’s NOSE Mendoza region, the high elevation and latitude here provide Fresh Herbs, sunlight on the vineyards long after other vineyards are dark. White Peach This allows very slow maturation of the grapes, without the typically associated heat.

PALATE Too many California winemakers believe that heat is good Lovely Peach, for grapes. The fact is, it’s the light from the sun, not the Nectarine ambient temperature, that grapes love most. Light influences photosynthesis, which helps mature the natural sugar in the grapes while retaining their natural acids. Acid is an important FINISH component in wine. It carries the flavors from the front of the Lively Lemon Twist mouth to the back and accounts for the wine’s finish. Without acid, the wine would be dull and flabby.

The name 2 Copas means “two glasses” in Spanish, signifying PAIRING that you can’t have just one glass. That would certainly be the Seafood, case here. Vegetarian While Chile is known for the Bordeaux varietals of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot, it’s the Sauvignon Blancs from here that CELLAR have knocked us out. This one is no exception. Our Héritage selection comes from Les Collines du Bourdic, COLOR founded in 1928 in France’s Languedoc appellation. This region Medium Magenta is just below the Rhône and shares much of the Rhône’s climate and soil. Unfortunately, it never shared its fame.

For decades, the Languedoc languished in the shadow of the NOSE Côtes du Rhône - and in many cases deservedly so. With no Berries and Roses prestige, they couldn’t charge enough to make the wines they were capable of, which created a downward spiral.

Things began to change in the 1970s, when enterprising vintners PALATE who saw the potential here made the expenditures to plant Black Currant vineyards in prime spots and upgrade those areas that had been neglected. Little by little, they elevated the region.

Probably no other wine area on Earth, with the possible exception FINISH of Sicily, has vaulted to the heights that the Languedoc has. Their Soft, Supple rise is due to the persistence and perseverance of companies like Les Collines du Bourdic.

Almost Purple Obviously, the stress and hours of the restaurant business make it one of the most demanding schedules imaginable. NOSE So, Ian decided to take a turn that would be beneficial to Dark Cherry, Cassis him and his family. He worked for a wine wholesaler and eventually, in 1999, founded his own import wine company.

Well, we’ve written this story before. The only thing that PALATE changes are the names. Importing and selling wine isn’t the Very Rich same as making it. The allure of making wine is often just too encompassing to ignore.

So, Ian and Alysia took the plunge and decided to make FINISH their own brands of wine, as an addition to their import and Long and Luscious domestic portfolio. By concentrating on just a few wines and areas, they could keep improving their products without the stress of doing too much. PAIRING Not doing too much - in the right way - is what Eagle Glen is Red Meat all about. The grapes have just the right amount of ripeness. The wine has just the right amount of oak, fruit, structure and tannins. CELLAR It really is perfect. From the dark, brooding color, through the black cherry and cassis nose, and on to exotic flavors and the Now through 2026 haunting elixir of a finish, this beauty delivers at every level you could ask for. But not too much.

Idlewright is crafted by Olga Karapanou Crawford. She is the COLOR first Greek winemaker to become a Master of Wine, considered Very Dark the crowing achievement in wine appreciation.

Olga was born and raised in a winemaking family in Greece, where she earned her bachelor’s degree in chemistry before NOSE coming to California to get her degrees in viticulture and Black Currant, oenology. Plum Wine may have first been made in the Middle East, but it was the Greeks who had the greatest impact on wine production in PALATE Europe. Way before the Roman Empire existed, it was Greece Cassis, Berry, that ruled the world. Wine was an integral part of their culture Vanilla and, as they conquered others, they took the vine with them.

FINISH The first place they landed was Italy, who already had a winemaking society. But, the Greeks noticed that the wines Everlasting Fruit from Italy tasted better. As it turned out, the grapes were trained around olive trees, which got them off the ground, where they attracted more sunlight. As a result, Greek winemakers began PAIRING installing stakes in their vineyards, on which to train the grapes Red Meat - and a revolution began.

Our selection is a blend of Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon with a touch of Petit Verdot. It represents a sort of yin/yang of wine, CELLAR as the grapes came from both the warm area of Calistoga and Now through 2025 the cool area of Oak Knoll. The result is power and elegance wrapped up in one beautiful robe of fruit and extract that makes its long finish worth the wait.

Ziata was launched in 2008 by Karen Cakebread and was COLOR named after her mother, Mary Annunziata. Karen was born in Very Pale Palo Alto and spent many years in the tech business before founding her winery. Her goal was to make food-friendly wines, so she chose the friendliest of them all, Sauvignon Blanc and Pinot Noir. NOSE Stone Fruit, Almost everyone thinks of Napa Valley as Cabernet country, Lemon Peel and for good reason. It is the pre-eminent grape here, as well as the most widely planted. But, many of us will mention Sauvignon Blanc in the same sentence, when discussing great PALATE wines from Napa Valley. Weighty Peach Like most people here, Karen is involved in every facet of production, from sourcing the grapes, to harvesting and on to FINISH determining the final blend. Karen is also a realist, and realized that she wasn’t a winemaker. So, she researched and dove Very Extracted into the selection process that netted her Jennifer Williams. Seafood, White Meat, Fowl Now on their twelfth harvest, we can taste Ziata’s process. Each vintage was a learning experience, and Karen and Jennifer have learned it well. Château Saint-Aubin has been in the Castro Family for 90 years. COLOR It is now run by the third generation, represented by Vincent Very Dark Purple Fernandez de Castro. Though he was born into the business, he felt he had to experience winemaking in other areas. So, he set his sights on vineyards in Portugal, Lebanon, Greece and South Africa before coming back to his family roots. NOSE Leather, Earth, The Bordelaise like to say that the soil of Bordeaux changes Cassis with every step. That’s what accounts for the patchwork quilt of vineyards that would seem close enough to make similar wines but don’t. PALATE Dark Cherry In this case, Saint-Aubin is classified as a Cru Bourgeois, located in the area of the Médoc. It is literally next door to one of the most famous Bordeaux chateaux, Cos d’Estournel in Saint- Estèphe, and their 2015 wine sells for upwards of $200! I guess FINISH you could call those very expensive steps. Long, Gripping Our selection contains splashes of other grapes, but it’s 50% Merlot and 25% Cabernet Sauvignon, which accounts for the power and presence of the wine. Add to that the fact that the PAIRING 2015 vintage was one of the best in Bordeaux ever, and you Red Meat almost can’t go wrong. Our Saint-Aubin is definitely the right stuff.

Vineyards were first planted on this property in 1300. Like most COLOR chateaux, it passed through several hands until 1971, when it Very Dense, Dark was purchased by the Castel family who run it today.

Each Black Plum, Earth acre has roughly 4,000 vines planted on it. The average acre in California has 900, but that is changing.

Obviously, it takes a lot more work to tend 4,000 vines than PALATE 900, but that’s how it must be done. This arrangement allows Chocolate, Vanilla each vine to produce one fourth the grapes of others and, in so doing, those grapes are much more flavorful. The vines are so close together that everything must be done FINISH by hand. Add to that the fact that the vineyard is organic and sustainable, and you have a very expensive project to deal with. Large and Lovely But, that is the tradition here, and the quality of the product says there is no reason to change. Like our Saint-Aubin PAIRING selection, D’Arcins is also a Cru Bourgeois from the spectacular Red Meat 2015 vintage and steps away from Château Cos d’Estournel. Great company indeed.
