    The Chichester Festival Theatre productions YOUNG CHEKHOV Olivier Theatre Previews from 14 July, press day 3 August, booking until 3 September with further performances to be announced. The YOUNG CHEKHOV trilogy opened to overwhelming acclaim at Chichester Festival Theatre last year. David Hare has written over thirty original plays, including The Power of Yes, Gethsemane, Stuff Happens, The Permanent Way (a co-production with Out of Joint), Amy’s View, Skylight, The Secret Rapture, The Absence of War, Murmuring Judges, Racing Demon, Pravda (written with Howard Brenton) and Plenty for the National Theatre.     TURANDOT Cast Biographies Soprano Martina Serafin (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut as the Marshallin in Der Rosenkavalier in 2007. Born in Vienna, she studied at the Vienna Conservatory and between 1995 and 2000 she was a member of the ensemble at Graz Opera. Guest appearances soon led her to the world´s premier opera stages, including at the Vienna State Opera where she has been a regular performer since 2005. Serafin´s repertoire includes the role of Lisa in Pique Dame, Sieglinde in Die Walküre, Elisabeth in Tannhäuser, the title role of Manon Lescaut, Lady Macbeth in Macbeth, Maddalena in Andrea Chénier, and Donna Elvira in Don Giovanni. Upcoming engagements include Elsa von Brabant in Lohengrin at the Opéra National de Paris and Abigaille in Nabucco at Milan’s Teatro alla Scala. Dramatic soprano Nina Stemme (Turandot) made her San Francisco Opera debut in 2004 as Senta in Der Fliegende Holländer, and has since returned to the Company in acclaimed performances as Brünnhilde in 2010’s Die Walküre and in 2011’s Ring cycle. We will attend three performances at the Opera, featuring the great French soprano, Natalie Dessay, in her first La Traviata, Met star Christine Brewer singing the title role in Gluck’s Alceste, and Mozart’s most perfect work, Don Giovanni, in Santa Fe’s glorious, partially outdoor, setting. Carmen opens on Saturday, March 30, 2019 for four performances at the Civic Theatre. Additional performances are April 2, 5, and 7 (matinee), 2019. Bringing her signature role to San Diego Opera for her house debut is mezzo-soprano Ginger Costa-Jackson. The Los Angeles Times’ critic Mark Swed noted “Ginger Costa-Jackson, an exceptional young Sicilian American mezzo-soprano, brought a dangerous, animalistic vibrancy to the title role. There is a lusty yet somber quality to her strikingly dark mezzo, the ideal voice for Carmen.” She is joined by tenor Robert Watson, also in a Company debut, as Don José. Also in Company debuts are soprano Sarah Tucker as Micaëla and baritone Scott Conner as Escamillo. It has been a special experience to be on the Federal Bench for over 34 years and on this Court for 24 Terms. The festivities start off at the Barbican on 13 June, when Die Dreigroschenoper will be per- formed in concert by Klangforum Wien with HK Gruber conducting. The starry cast includes Ian Bostridge (Macheath), Dorothea Röschmann (Polly), and Angelika Kirchschlager (Jenny). On 14 June, the Lost Musicals Trust begins a six-performance run of Johnny Johnson at Sadler’s Wells; Ian Marshall Fisher directs, Chris Walker conducts, with Max Gold as Johnny. And the Southbank Centre pre- sents Lost in the Stars on 23 and 24 June with the BBC Concert Orchestra. Charles Hazlewood conducts and Jude Kelly directs. It won’t be necessary to travel to London for Klangforum Wien’s Dreigroschenoper: other European performances are scheduled in Hamburg (Laeiszhalle, 11 June), Paris (Théâtre des Champs-Elysées, 14 June), and back in the Klangforum’s hometown, Vienna (Konzerthaus, 16 June).
