1. Theatre UNB presents Perfect Pie by Judith Thompson Feb 23-26

One of the finest works by one of Canada's most decorated playwrights, multi-award winner Judith Thompson, will take the stage at Theatre UNB with a production of her drama Perfect Pie.

A work by turns powerful, harrowing, and moving, Perfect Pie tells the story of two unlikely friends who reunite after being estranged for years in the wake of a mysterious accident that tore apart a tumultuous and intense adolescent bond. Bullying, rape, child abuse, poverty, and seizure disorders are reflected upon as these two women reminisce on their unwavering childhood friendship, a friendship that has come to define them for better or for worse.

Perfect Pie is presented as a thesis production by graduating UNB Theatre students Becky Forbes, Christine Bissonnette, and Stefan Folkins, and stars Rebekah Chasse, Elizabeth Goodyear, Nicole Vair, and Meghan Loch.

The play will be performed at 8pm nightly, February 23-26, at Memorial Hall on the UNB campus. Tickets ($10 regular, $6 for students) are available at the door.

For more information, phone 447-3078 or email [email protected]

2. Theatre St. Thomas double bill Hearts Desire and The Real Inspector Hound Feb 23-26

Theatre St. Thomas will a present double bill performance: Heart’s Desire by Caryl Churchill and The Real Inspector Hound by Tom Stoppard, February 23-26, 2011, 8pm nightly at the Black Box Theatre, St Thomas University, with a matinee performance Saturday, Feb 26 at 2pm. Two one-act plays will be presented by two separate casts.

Admission is $10 for adults, $5 for students and seniors.

Ilkay Silk, director of drama at STU says: “I am a great admirer of both Caryl Churchill and Tom Stoppard. I think they are two of the greatest living playwrights in the English language. The opportunity to do two of their plays on the same night was irresistible.”

Heart’s Desire Hearts Desire is a kitchen sink drama about a middle class couple awaiting the arrival of their grown daughter from Australia. Through slapstick, sometimes sassy dialogue, Alice and Brian, along with Brian’s sister, Maisie, take the audience along an adventure of unanticipated, bizarre events as the play leads them into alternative series of developments.

As the play repeatedly returns to the beginning, additional characters appear in the story, tweaking the course of the plot with their presence. Through seriously toned slices in the midst of amusing and seemingly unstructured events, a truth is revealed.

The Real Inspector Hound The Real Inspector Hound follows two theatre critics, Moon and Birdboot, who while observing an absurd setup of a country house in the style of a “whodunit” murder mystery, become involved in the action, causing a series of events that parallel the play they are watching. Stoppard delves into the ideas of fate and free will, as well as exploring the themes that stem from a play within a play.

7. Get lost in the 80's with The Lost Fingers at the Playhouse Feb 26

The Fredericton Playhouse is gearing up for a fantastic evening of swinging gypsy-jazz style music Saturday, February 26 at 8pm, courtesy of The Lost Fingers, Canada’s Juno Award nominated sensation. This acoustic trio from Québec City plays the pop hits of the ‘80s in a style inspired by their musical hero Django Reinhardt. Named after the two fingers on Reinhardt’s left hand that were left paralyzed after a devastating caravan fire, the band reworks popular songs in their charming gypsy-jazz style.

But The Lost Fingers is no novelty act. Mikaloff and singer/guitarist Christian Roberge are classically trained musicians, who met at the Québec Conservatory of Music, while double bass player Alex Morrissette has a bachelor of music degree in jazz studies. In 2008, the group created an ingenious tribute to the music they grew up on in the ‘80s, mixed with the music of Reinhardt, with the Lost in The ‘80s. Their debut album has sold close to 400,000 copies around the world and was nominated for Album of the Year at the 2009 Juno Awards.

The Lost Fingers bring a breath of fresh air to the 1980s and beyond, providing renditions of classic songs so full of energy and life you can’t help but be hooked by the experience. Last year, the band thrilled audiences across the country with their witty and jazzed-up renditions of hits by the likes of AC/DC, , , , and more. The Lost Fingers are hugely talented artists who have fashioned a performance that’s hilarious, offbeat, and incredibly fun to listen to. Take a walk down a hairspray-filled memory lane and find yourself singing along to the classics of the ‘80s in a way you never thought you would!

Tickets for The Lost Fingers are available at the Fredericton Playhouse box office 1-866-884-5800, or online at www.theplayhouse.ca. Visit artist website: www.thelostfingers.com

3 8. Early Music Fredericton presents Germanic Baroque concert Feb 27

Tickets available at the door: $15 adults / $10 seniors / $5 students.

9. Monday Night Film Series presents Waiting for 'Superman' Feb 28

The NB Film Co-op continues its Fredericton Monday Night Film Series. Screenings take place in Tilley Hall, Room 102, UNB at 8pm.

February 28, 2011 Waiting for Superman Director: Davis Guggenheim Cast: N/A Run Time: 102 minutes Country: USA Year: 2010 Language: English

How can America save its education system? This is the question that lies at the heart of 2010 Toronto International Film Festival® favourite Waiting for 'Superman'. A provocative and cogent examination of the crisis of public education in the United States, the film is motivated by alarming signs that children are falling behind in basic skills even as spending has increased. Academy Award®- winning director Davis Guggenheim (An Inconvenient Truth, It Might Get Loud) lends a human face to the problem by following five children trying to navigate their way through the public school system, as well as the educators and reformers trying to find real and lasting solutions within a dysfunctional system.

One of the film’s standout figures is Geoffrey Canada, the creator of the Harlem Children’s Zone, an organization that has shown demonstrable success at raising educational standards in an economically challenged New York neighbourhood. Growing up poor in the South Bronx, Canada remembers that feeling as a child, only Superman could save him. Instead, Canada proved heroic himself, graduating from Harvard with a master’s degree in education and setting out to fix the nation’s schools. He thought it would take him about three years. That was in 1975. Waiting for 'Superman' reveals the invisible forces that have held back true education reform for decades and describes the multiple obstacles that stand in the way of improvement, including persistent neglect of schools known as “dropout factories” and rigid rules that prevent superintendents from firing bad teachers. Just as An Inconvenient Truth gave new urgency to climate change, Waiting for 'Superman' will leave you fired-up and ready to improve education no matter where you live. ******* Regular admission is $7 at the door. Regular attendees can purchase memberships that will reduce admission price to $4 per screening.

For membership information, please contact the NB Film Co-op, 732 Charlotte Street (Charlotte Street Arts Center). 455-1632. www.nfbilmcoop.com/fs.htm / [email protected]

The founder and long-time artistic director of Theatre New Brunswick has been named the 2011 recipient of The Playhouse Honours. Walter Learning’s contributions to the community will be celebrated at the Fredericton Playhouse’s annual Onstage Gala scheduled for Saturday, May 7.

Learning, who founded Theatre New Brunswick in 1968, sought the commitment from groups in communities around the province, and the Beaverbrook Foundation, to create the first professional theatre company in New Brunswick, and one of the longest running regional companies in Canada. He served as artistic director of Theatre New Brunswick from 1968 to 1978 and returned as artistic producer from 1995 to 1999.

An accomplished actor, director, and playwright, Learning collaborated with critically acclaimed literary figure Alden Nowlan to produce several world premieres during his tenure at TNB. He also oversaw the institution of TNB Young Company, which has been bringing professional theatre performances to elementary, middle, and high schools in Fredericton, and in communities across the province, for over 35 years. His contributions also led to the establishment of TNB Theatre School in 1999, which currently boasts an enrolment of over 300 students a year.

"The Playhouse and Fredericton gave me the freedom and opportunity to develop the skills needed to pursue a career in the performing arts,” said Learning. “I will be forever grateful for that gift. This current honour is truly the icing on my cake."

The Playhouse Honours, now in its fourth year, was established to foster a deeper appreciation of the value that individuals can make to community life through their work in the performing arts. The honouree is selected annually by the Playhouse Board of Directors from nominees proposed by the public, and recommended by a selection committee. The honouree is fêted at the annual Onstage Gala Dinner, a benefit event for The Playhouse’s community work, and is recognized in a permanent display located at The Playhouse. Previous recipients of The Playhouse Honours are Ilkay Silk, Brent Staeben, and Philip Sexsmith.
