WWW.MENTORSCHOOLS.NET /MENTORPUBLICSCHOOLS @MENTORSCHOOLS SHOP LOCAL Shopping Local Makes Sense! et’s face it, as savvy consumers, we’re always searching for the best deal we can find but we’d like to remind you to please shop local when you can. Why? Because 68 cents of every dollarL which is spent local, stays local. It’s no secret that shopping and dining is a big deal in the city of Mentor. Over 300 retailers and 170 eateries generate over $1.6 billion in annual sales and employ over 9,500 people in our city. The direct impact is evident, but the indirect benefit is that income tax dollars generated through these jobs help pay for safety forces, road construction, parks and facilities, senior programs, and many of the other things that make Mentor such a great place to live. Municipal income taxes account for over 66% of the City’s annual budget which is why shopping local makes so much sense. Although, you may save a few bucks when ordering gifts online, you support the local economy and help enhance the quality of life for everyone in our community every single time you purchase from a Mentor business. Go to visitmentor.com to download a copy of our regularly updated Mentor Visitor Guide which contains information on shopping and dining options in our city. After graduating from Mentor High School in 1980, Balish lived in Riviera Beach, Florida, where she began her radio career. “It’s something I think I always wanted to do, but never believed I would actually get to do it.” After three years and a couple of radio jobs in the Sunshine State, she couldn’t wait to home. “My family’s here, my friends are here, and I even love the changes in seasons here.” Yes, that includes winter. Because even though she can’t ride her beloved motorcycle for a few months, she’s content spending time with her other hobby, cooking and baking. She’s best known for her cassata and pistachio cakes, and special event cupcakes. And like her nighttime radio show, she takes requests. She has been playing classic rock on WNCX now for 30 years, alongside fellow radio veterans, program director, Bill Louis, and renowned Cleveland musician, Michael Stanley. “They’re like my brothers. We’ve been through a lot together all these years, both professionally and personally. I’m so lucky to be able to still work with them. I’ll be there until they kick me out!” Despite a lifelong career at the same station, the evening deejay (7 p.m. – midnight) says she is never bored. She loves the music she gets to play, and is always thinking up new ways to get her longtime listeners involved. Sure there’s “Paula’s Request Hour,” where fans call in and ask Paula Balish for their favorite songs, but lately, it’s the “Tonight’s Poll” on Popular Cleveland DJ maintains Facebook that sparks listener participation. “The nightly polls are very popular,” she says. “I’ll ask anything that’ll get roots in her hometown people talking.” People are her business, and her joy. eanna Adams, a longtime Mentor resident, has worked a lot of gigs. But she is a writer, first and foremost. DSo when she works as a hair stylist, restaurant hostess, or instructor—all of which she still does—anything that happens can find itself into one of her stories. She’s been writing since her early teen years, so you may have seen her byline in a lot of different places: essays in magazine, articles in Today’s Family Magazine, Bridge, as well as in this publication. And also on the cover of one of her books. Her writing contains multitudes, too. She’s published nonfiction like “Rock ‘n’ Roll & the Cleveland Connection,” which took four years and 300 interviews. She’s written oth- er people’s stories as a journalist, her own stories in “Con- fessions of a Not-So-Good Catholic Girl,” and novels about untamed girls who grow to be undaunted women. The one constant in most of her writing – novels, nonfic- tion and journalism – is music. She loves almost all genres, “Depending on the day, I write an hour, or an hour-and-a- but often returns to rock because of Cleveland’s rich history half. cityofmentor.com | 23 FACES OF MENTOR It seems Trivisonno was destined for a career in football. “Both my father and uncle were football coaches, so it felt natural. I had good role models and mentors.” He adds that former coach, Charlie Mental, had a big influence on him, as well as his present assistant coach, Nes Janiak. When Trivisonno graduated from Mentor High in 1981, he knew he’d return to his alma mater someday. “I wanted to come back and be a part of this great football team. My goal was to make Mentor the best we could, and I think we did it,” he says, never taking full credit. He went on to play defensive back at Bowling Green, where he graduated in 1985. Three years later, he did, in fact, return to Mentor High as an assistant coach, and by 1997, became head coach. From there, he led his, team to 196 wins and 18 playoff appearances, thus winning several Coach of the Year awards. Like others did for him, Trivisonno trained many who went on to career success, including the renowned quarter- back for the Chicago Bears, Mitch Trubisky. In an interview with the Chicago Sun Times, Trubisky praised his former coaches. “Everything my [Mentor] coaches instilled in me growing up, I carry with me to this day.” Steve Trivisonno returned the praise, telling Cleveland.com, “We have a great quarterbacks coach in Nes Janiak, who Trivisonno developed [Trubisky] well, made him a student of the game.
