Located on the red, yellow, and green metro lines and multiple bus routes, the school is highly accessible from most areas of the city. The school serves a high-need population and makes it a goal to integrate nutrition curriculum into multiple units of study. DC Bilingual PCS was founded in Columbia Heights in 2004. The school has a rich history of serving an incredibly diverse community with students and staff originating from up to 20 different countries.

Our two service members will work directly with DC Bilingual. There are many upcoming projects that our service members can lead, co-lead, or support with including: cultivating a monarch butterfly garden, building and planting a root box, forming a proposal of how the school could host a glass beehive and/or chicken coop, and continuing to grow and improve the school's outdoor classroom. We are a DC Public STEM Elementary School. The mission of JBES is to create a campus where ALL stakeholders take ownership and responsibility, and are held accountable for the success of all our students, by relentlessly focusing on instruction, and improving students' academic, social and behavioral outcomes. We have an alumni partnership with Washington Youth Garden and Monarch Sisters Schools.

We are an urban school that is located with in a residential neighborhood. Our population of 297 students, is comprised of 90% African American, 9% Hispanic and 1% Caucasian. John Burroughs Elementary School is an award winning Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) focused school located in Ward 5 of the District of Columbia. Nestled in the heart of the Brookland community, JBES has very strong community support from our parents, neighbors, and community based organizations.

John Burroughs Elementary is the only school the service member will be serving. Once selected, the service member will collaborate with teachers to plan and co-teach lessons, support environmental initiatives, maintain school gardens and build community through school wide events including cafeteria events, family day, STEM Expos and garden work days.

Democracy Prep is charter school located in southeast Washington DC. We serve PreK3 - 6th grade and will be adding seventh grade next year. We currently use Revolution Foods to manage our meal service to our scholars. We do not have an in-house cafeteria staff. The purpose of Democracy Prep is educate responsible citizen scholars for success in the college of their choice and a life of active citizenship.

Democracy Prep Congress Heights is located in Ward 8 southeast DC. DP Congress Heights opened its doors in 2014 after the previous school failed to meet the goals in their charter.

We have a garden and we would like the service member to help with educating the scholars about growing food. We also would like expose our scholars and families to different fruits and vegetables. Scholars and parents could then identify what they like and maybe start buying at the grocery stores. The service member can also help the scholars be knowledgeable about nutrition and making the best choices to fuel their bodies.

Mundo Verde opened in 2011. We moved in 2014 to our new and permanent school building in Truxton Circle, near the NoMa neighborhood which is developing rapidly.
