Common Core Kingdom, LLC is a certified Lexile® Partner. These texts are officially measured and approved by Lexile and MetaMetrics® to ensure appropriate rigor and differentiation for students.

The Lexile Framework® for Reading measures are scientific, quantitative text levels. When the Lexile of a text is measured, specific, measurable attributes of the text are considered, including, but not limited to, word frequency, sentence length, and text cohesion. These are difficult attributes for humans to evaluate, so a computer measures them.

Common Core State Standards uses Lexile level bands as one measure of text complexity. Text complexity ranges ensure that students are college and career ready by the end of 12th grade. Lexile measures help educators scaffold and differentiate instruction, as well as monitor reading growth. Grade Band Lexile® Bands Aligned to Common Core Expectations K-1 190L-530L 2-3 420L-820L 4-5 740L-1010L 6-8 925L-1185L

Keep in mind when using any leveled text that many students will need scaffolding and support to reach text at the high end of their grade band. According to Appendix A of the Common Core Standards, “It is important to recognize that scaffolding often is entirely appropriate. The expectation that scaffolding will occur with particularly challenging texts is built into the Standards’ grade-by-grade text complexity expectations, for example. The general movement, however, should be toward decreasing scaffolding and increasing independence both within and across the text complexity bands defined in the Standards.” 790L Compare/Contrast Points of View Name: ______Date: ______Adorable Adoptions

A dog is a great addition to a family! They are lovable companions that can add quality to your life. Where should you get a dog from? The answer is simple. Adopting a dog is a great choice for any pet lover. People looking to get dogs should adopt from shelters or rescue organizations. Shelters and rescue organizations can only hold so many dogs. By adopting, you save a life. You also free up space for another dog. Did you know that about 2.7 million dogs and cats are killed each year because shelters are too full? Many of these animals would be loving and loyal family members if given the chance. Many people argue that buying from breeders is better because they want particular breeds. This is no reason to buy. There are rescue groups for most dog breeds. If you have your heart set on a certain breed and you can’t find a rescue organization near you, many organizations will transport dogs. What about if you don’t care about a purebred dog? There are tons of options for you! There are many unique mixtures of breeds. Who wants their dogs to look ordinary anyways? By adopting a dog, you can select the temperament or age of your dog. Many people love skipping the puppy stage and adopting dogs that are already house-trained! Adopting a dog is significantly cheaper than purchasing from a breeder. On average, adopting from a shelter or rescue organization is $100. Shelters will also run free adoption specials when they are overcrowded. In addition to having a small fee, most adopted dogs come spayed or neutered and with all their vaccinations. This is a huge money saver! Buying a dog from a reputable breeder can cost about $1,000. Plus, you must pay for spaying and neutering, as well as the vaccinations. If you’re looking to add a furry friend to your family, adoption is the best choice!

Getting a dog is a big decision. It is important to do research before adding a furry friend to your family. For the best experience, you should buy a dog from a trusted breeder. Experienced dog breeders have a wealth of knowledge. They fully understand the breeds they work with. They can educate you. Breeders can ensure that you are getting the breed that is perfect. Breeders can also help you with tips to help train your new puppy. Many will also recommend the proper and medicine. Some will even recommend vets that specialize in particular breeds. While raising your new puppy, the breeder you purchase from is the perfect contact if you have any questions. Buying a dog from a trusted breeder ensures that you are getting a purebred dog. Purebred dogs have predictable physical traits. Buying from a breeder can mean that you get a dog that is the right size for you. People living in small apartments usually need small dogs. People with big back yards often want larger dogs. Some people need certain dog breeds because of allergies. Purchasing from a breeder also offers you the opportunity to meet the puppy’s parents. This is an excellent indicator of what your puppy will grow up to be like. In addition to predictable physical traits, purchasing from a dog breeder makes certain that you are getting a purebred dog with predictable behaviors. Mutts are mixes of various breeds. This means that you never know what the dog’s temperament will be. If you purchase a purebred dog from a breeder, you will know the breed. You will be able to research the dog temperament that is right for you. For example, poodles and Jack Russell Terriers are known for being hyperactive. This is not best for everyone. Golden Retrievers are known for being intelligent and friendly. Getting a dog is a big decision. People looking to purchase dogs should make sure that they know what they are getting. The best way to be certain that you are getting a dog that is good for you is to purchase from a trusted breeder. © Julie Bochese a. wouldWhich idea4. “ of authorthe d. c. b. a. gettingnewa dog? There is proof showing that these animals can live longer in the circus than in the wild, as long as circuses follow the rules and treat the animals well. Just like zoo animals, circus animals live stress-free lives. Life in the wild is much harder. Plus, circuses help with conservation, which is good for all animals. They educate the public about wild animals and breed those animals in . In many ways, circuses help and care about animals. Rules and regulations exist to make sure that circuses take care of the performing animals. For example, animals need to see vets when they are sick and get fed proper food. It is against the law for a circus to break these rules. If they do break the rules and treat animals poorly, the circus can get in trouble. The circus could lose customers, money, or their reputation. As long as circuses follow the rules, animals are happy and healthy. They get plenty to eat, see vets when they’re sick, and live much better lives than they would in the wild. A circus is not that different from a zoo. Both places give people the chance to see wild animals up close and learn about how they behave. By teaching people how amazing these animals are, circuses are actually helping raise awareness for . As animals’ shrink in the wild because of deforestation and overpopulation, breeding programs in captivity help keep some from going extinct. Circuses participate in breeding programs, so they play an important role in conservation. In this way, they help keep species alive. There is no reason that animals shouldn’t live long, comfortable lives in a circus. Rules exist to make sure that circuses treat their performing animals well, or they face consequences. If animals can live good lives in captivity in a zoo, they can do so in a circus, too. Circuses can help educate people about wild animals and help protect those animals. Circus life can be a very happy one for animals. © Julie Bochese 970L Compare/Contrast Points of View Name: ______Date: ______The Mistreatment of Circus Animals

Most groups believe that circus life is bad for wild animals. A life full of loud noises and small is stressful for them. This is especially true for social animals that need space to roam with others of their kind. There is proof of animal abuse in circuses around the world. There is also proof that circus animals are unhappy and troubled. These animals behave differently than normal animals would. They have mental and physical health problems. Unlike a zoo which mimics an animal’s natural , a circus is a strange and scary world. Circus performing is not in the animals' best interest. Sadly, when circuses are not regulated well enough, animal abuse occurs. There is evidence of trainers beating and whipping animals when they do not perform tricks well enough. Clearly, these animals do not perform tricks because they enjoy it, but they perform out of fear. Once the show is over, the abuse continues in the animals’ cages. Their cages are small, dark, and often dirty. The animals travel around the world in these cages, and many have died of exhaustion or heat strokes on the way to the next show. The result of animal abuse in the circus is obvious in circus animals’ personalities. Experts in animal behavior say that circus animals often show signs of mental problems. For example, they are extremely nervous, bob their heads nonstop, or even scratch and bite themselves. None of these behaviors are normal for happy, healthy animals. Tragically, the mental stress on circus animals is sometimes too much for them to , and they can actually harm their trainers or circus attendees. None of this means that circuses are automatically bad; a circus show can still be fun without animals involved. There are many other reasons to go to a circus like human acrobats, magic tricks, and performing clowns. Too many animals have been harmed performing in circuses, and many animal rights groups believe that the only way to surely stop the abuse is to ban animals from performing. © Julie Bochese 4.
