Representations of Education in HBO's the Wire, Season 4
Teacher EducationJames Quarterly, Trier Spring 2010 Representations of Education in HBO’s The Wire, Season 4 By James Trier The Wire is a crime drama that aired for five seasons on the Home Box Of- fice (HBO) cable channel from 2002-2008. The entire series is set in Baltimore, Maryland, and as Kinder (2008) points out, “Each season The Wire shifts focus to a different segment of society: the drug wars, the docks, city politics, education, and the media” (p. 52). The series explores, in Lanahan’s (2008) words, an increasingly brutal and coarse society through the prism of Baltimore, whose postindustrial capitalism has decimated the working-class wage and sharply divided the haves and have-nots. The city’s bloated bureaucracies sustain the inequality. The absence of a decent public-school education or meaningful political reform leaves an unskilled underclass trapped between a rampant illegal drug economy and a vicious “war on drugs.” (p. 24) My main purpose in this article is to introduce season four of The Wire—the “education” season—to readers who have either never seen any of the series, or who have seen some of it but James Trier is an not season four. Specifically, I will attempt to show associate professor in the that season four holds great pedagogical potential for School of Education at academics in education.1 First, though, I will present the University of North examples of the critical acclaim that The Wire received Carolina at Chapel throughout its run, and I will introduce the backgrounds Hill, Chapel Hill, North of the creators and main writers of the series, David Carolina. -

Sam Sirianni Night Fort Myers High School FORT MYERS HIGH SCHOOL Letter From the Pricipal Welcome to Fort Myers High School and the 2019-2020 school year. Thank you for attending one of our many athletic events. Since 1949, the current campus of Fort Myers High School has seen many talented students bless its hallways. The fall sports program highlights our football, volleyball, cross country, bowling, golf, swimming, cheerleading, and band programs. The students, coaches, and directors for each of these groups spent their summers preparing for the upcoming seasons. They are to be commended for the hard work, time, sweat, and dedication they put their programs so that our students may perform at their highest capabilities. The Fort Myers community is rich in tradition and we look forward to growing together the “Green Wave Tradition” that has continued for over a hundred years. FMHS is not just a school it is a special place where relationships are built, traditions are kept, and we treat each other like a F.A.M.I.L.Y. It is quite an honor to be part of such a prestigious program that has proven to be one of the winningest football programs in the State of Florida. Thank you to those who have been a part of the great tradition of excellence at Fort Myers High School. I would also like to thank all of the parents, students, teachers, coaches, staff, booster club, and community members that have made an investment in the education of young people; you are a critical piece to our continued success and tradition. -
2021-2022 TENTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON the Outer Edge of Yout!
MATTHEW ROBERTSON ARTISTIC DIRECTOR 2021-2022 TENTH ANNIVERSARY SEASON the outer edge of yout! IN PERSON AND LIVESTREAMED SUBSCRIPTIONS @ THETHIRTEENCHOIR.ORG 2021-2022 SEASON the outer edge of yout! As The Thirteen approaches our 10th anniversary season I’ve been thinking about the passage of time, how it changes each of us, and what that means to me and The Thirteen. First and foremost, this year is one of celebration: not only is The Thirteen thriving as we approach our 10th anniversary, this milestone coincides with some measure of relief from the health and human ravages of the Covid-19 pandemic. While I look forward to marking these triumphs, for me this year serves as a rededication to the sentiments of youth: childlike sincerity, wide-eyed wonder, and open-hearted care. These sentiments seem more meaningful when they are conscious choices rather than simply a reflection of innocence. Our season embodies this spirit. We will end our season with the world premiere performances of Scott Ordway’s The Outer Edge of Youth, a visionary new choral opera that looks at the innocence of childhood and the beauty of the natural world (and from which I borrowed the title for our season). Another highlight of this year will be a fully staged theatrical performance of Johannes Brahms’ Ein Deutsches Requiem. Staged by my friend and collaborator Timothy Nelson, hailed as “The Future of Opera” by The New York Times, and joined by the University of Maryland’s Chamber Singers, this performance seeks to embrace joy, connection, and our shared humanity. In each of our concerts this year – from Monteverdi to Vaughan Williams to the Christmas story - I am above all searching for connection: to touch and excite each and every one of you. -

In 2010, Colin decided to head to Hollywood, where he instantly landed the lead role of ‘Michael Kovak’ and worked alongside Academy-Award winner Sir Anthony Hopkins in the New Line Cinema feature “The Rite,” directed by Mikael Hafstrom. The following year, he starred in the ABC pilot “Identity,” opposite Angela Bassett for executive producer Mark Gordon (“Grey’s Anatomy,” “Criminal Minds,” “Private Practice”), and booked the co-lead opposite BAFTA winner Noel Clarke in Johannes Roberts’ sci-fi film “Storage 24” for Universal Pictures Home Entertainment. Prior to the War of 1812, an Indian runner was dispatched with a war belt of wampum with a request for the Dakotas and Chippewas to meet at the big bend of the Wisconsin River (Portage). While camped on the banks of the Lemonweir, the runner dreamed that he had lost his belt of wampum at his last sleeping place. On waking in the morning, he found his dream to be a reality and he hastened back to retrieve the belt. During the 1820's, the French-Canadian fur traders called the river, La memoire - the memory. The Lemonweir rises in the extensive swamps and marshes in Monroe County.
