Incubating and brooding behaviour We witnessed feeding of young in the nest on several occasions, the food items being too small to identify. A 30 minute watch on 16 November 1981 provided only one observation: a moth c. 20 mm across was fed to one chick which swallowed it whole and then excreted over the side of the nest. Seven watches of c. 30 minutes were made to obtain data on times spent by incubating adults on nests. These are summarized below:

Table 2 Incubation Pattern

Observation Date Commenced Duration Sitting times

(min.) (min.) 3 Dec. 1981 1640 h 32 8 4 4 9 6 Dec. 1981 1546 h 35 21 8 Dec. 1981 1540 h 37 12 20 9 Dec. 1981 1247 h 35 9 21 10 Jan. 1982 0705 h 35 8 10 12 Jan. 1982 0833 h 29 11 15 13 Jan. 1982 0857 h 30 12 10 Sitting time, average 11.6 min., range 4 to 21 min.

Comments on Table 2 Change-over never took any appreciable time - often only one or two seconds. Usually an adult called prior to change-over, not always the sitting bird. All observations were made in favourable weather though there was a light to moderate wind, usually from the easterly quarter, on each occasion. The sitting bird did not necessarily face the wind, but the nest was well sheltered by shrubbery. •

BINDING THE AUSTRALIAN BIRD WATCHER The indexes to each volume of The Australian Bird Watcher have been printed in such a way that when the set of index pages is released from the staples in the centre section of the last number for the volume the title page and the general index are the outer folded sheet. This is designed to be bound at the front of the volume. The species, author and plate indexes can then be bound at the back without need for separation from each other. AUSTRALIAN 276 BIRD WATCHER

INDEX OF SPECIES

The scientific names used for Australian birds in this index follow Editorial policy in being those of the Checklist of the Birds of Australia, Part 1, Non-, R .A.O.U., 1975, and the Interim List of Australian Songbirds, Passerines, R.A.O.U., 1975 and their amendments in Emu 76: 216-218 and Emu 78: 80-87. The common names are those of the "Recommended English Names for Australian Birds", Emu 77, Supp.: 245-307. Where synonyms have been used in this volume, both for scientific and common names, they are shown in brackets. For extra-limital birds the names used are those of the text, or, where scientific or common names were omitted, those of A Checklist of the Birds of the World, Edward S. Gruson, Collins, 1976. Minor differences in spelling have been disregarded. The species are arranged in alphabetical order of genera. Subspecies have not been entered. Only the first reference in any one paper is listed except when there is a tabular list of all the species mentioned in the paper, when the reference given is to this.
