An Empirical Investigation of Performance Overhead in Cross-Platform Mobile Development Frameworks
Empirical Software Engineering https://doi.org/10.1007/s10664-020-09827-6 An empirical investigation of performance overhead in cross-platform mobile development frameworks Andreas Biørn-Hansen1,2 · Christoph Rieger3 · Tor-Morten Grønli1 · Tim A. Majchrzak4 · Gheorghita Ghinea1,2 © The Author(s) 2020 Abstract The heterogeneity of the leading mobile platforms in terms of user interfaces, user expe- rience, programming language, and ecosystem have made cross-platform development frameworks popular. These aid the creation of mobile applications – apps – that can be executed across the target platforms (typically Android and iOS) with minimal to no platform-specific code. Due to the cost- and time-saving possibilities introduced through adopting such a framework, researchers and practitioners alike have taken an interest in the underlying technologies. Examining the body of knowledge, we, nonetheless, frequently encounter discussions on the drawbacks of these frameworks, especially with regard to the performance of the apps they generate. Motivated by the ongoing discourse and a lack of empirical evidence, we scrutinised the essential piece of the cross-platform frameworks: the bridge enabling cross-platform code to communicate with the underlying operating system and device hardware APIs. The study we present in the article benchmarks and mea- sures the performance of this bridge to reveal its associated overhead in Android apps. The development of the artifacts for this experiment was conducted using five cross-platform development frameworks to generate Android apps, in addition to a baseline native Android app implementation. Our results indicate that – for Android apps – the use of cross-platform frameworks for the development of mobile apps may lead to decreased performance com- pared to the native development approach. -
Stamina, a Coffee Monitoring System
Stamina, a coffee monitoring system Alexandra Rouhana 1, Lorenzo Scutigliani 2, and Quentin McGaw 3 1 Electrical and electronic engineering, Imperial College London [email protected] 2 Electrical and electronic engineering, Imperial College London [email protected] 3 Electrical and electronic engineering, Imperial College London [email protected] 28 March 2016 Abstract. Coffee drinking allows to reduce tiredness and is widely used in our society. In particular, the caffeine contained in coffee influences the quality of sleep of coffee drinkers. However, since each person reacts differently to caffeine, there is no rule of thumb to determine the optimal coffee intake schedule in order to maximise performance during the day while ensuring high quality sleep at night. Stamina is a solution providing this missing information to the coffee drinker, by monitoring and analysing the activity of the user over several days. It uses the sensors of both an Android smartphone and smartwatch to analyse the activity of the users, such as when they wake up, go to sleep or drink coffee. A remote server stores these data and analyses them with a clustering machine learning technique to provide suggestions to the users through their mobile devices about their daily coffee consumption. Keywords: Caffeine, Sleep quality, Activity recognition, Smartwatch, Affinity propagation, Clustering 1 Introduction ● The selection process of a clustering algorithm adapted for the detection of Today’s economy faces an increasing demand for patterns between multiple days, in order to products improving one’s well-being and maximising determine various predictions according to physical and intellectual performance [6]. -
Secure Remote Service Execution for Web Media Streaming
Secure Remote Service Execution for Web Media Streaming vorgelegt von Dipl.-Ing. Alexandra Mikityuk geb. in Leningrad, UdSSR von der Fakultät IV – Elektrotechnik und Informatik der Technischen Universität Berlin zur Erlangung des akademischen Grades Doktor der Ingenieurwissenschaften - Dr.-Ing. - genehmigte Dissertation Promotionsausschuss: Vorsitzender: Prof. Dr. Thomas Magedanz, Technische Universität Berlin Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Jean-Pierre Seifert, Technische Universität Berlin Gutachter: Prof. Dr. Jean-Claude Dufourd, ParisTech Gutachter: Prof. Dr.-Ing. Ina Schieferdecker, Technische Universität Berlin Tag der wissenschaftlichen Aussprache: 29. August 2017 Berlin 2017 D 83 Abstract Through continuous advancements in streaming and Web technologies over the past decade, the Web has become a platform for media delivery. Web standards like HTML5 have been designed accordingly, allowing for the delivery of applications, high-quality streaming video, and hooks for interoperable content protection. Efficient video encoding algorithms such as AVC/HEVC and streaming protocols such as MPEG-DASH have served as additional triggers for this evolution. Users now employ Web browsers as a tool for receiving streaming media and rendering Web applications, and browsers have been embedded into almost every kind of connected device. The drawback of these technical developments and quick rate of user adoption is that modern Web browsers have introduced significant constraints on devices’ capabilities. First, the computational requirements have risen continuously, resulting in a cycle where modern devices can be nearly outdated after a year or two. Second, as the integration of browser technologies is a complicated matter, not every platform provides the same performance. Different Operating Systems (OSs), chipsets and software engines are the main reasons for this difference in performance. -

The installer will currently fail if you run it from a network share on Windows. Please copy the installer to a local disk before launching on this platform. The engine supports a variety of operating systems and versions. This section describes the platforms that we ensure the engine runs on without issue (although in some cases with reduced functionality). The engine supports the following Windows OSes: Windows XP SP2 and above Windows Server 2003 Windows Vista SP1 and above (both 32-bit and 64-bit) Windows 7 (both 32-bit and 64-bit) Windows Server 2008 Windows 8.x (Desktop) Note: On 64-bit platforms the engine still runs as a 32-bit application through the WoW layer. The linux engine requires the following: 32-bit installation, or a 64-bit linux distribution that has a 32-bit compatibility layer 2.4.x or later kernel X11R5 capable Xserver running locally on a 24-bit display glibc 2.3.2 or later gtk/gdk/glib (optional – required for native theme support) pango/xft (optional – required for pdf printing, anti-aliased text and unicode font support) lcms (optional – required for color profile support in JPEGs and PNGs) gksu (optional – required for elevate process support) Note: The optional requirements (except for gksu and lcms) are also required by Firefox and Chrome, so if your linux distribution runs one of those, it will run the engine.
