ABOUT THE AUTHOR EUGENE IONESCO (Nov 26, 1909, Slatina, Romania - March 28, 1994, Paris, France) is an internationally renowned playwright and absurd- ist master. His work profoundly altered the face of modern drama. He wrote more than twenty plays, as well as stories, memoirs, theoretical essays and a novel. Ionesco’s rst one-act “antiplay,” The Bald Soprano (1950), inspired a revolution in dramatic techniques and helped inau- gurate the “Theatre of the Absurd.” He followed it with other one-act plays including The Lesson (1951), The Chairs (1952), and The New Tenant (1955), in which illogical events create an atmosphere both comic and grotesque, and dialogue breaks down into random, cliched and mean- ingless exchanges revealing language as ultimately inadequate to ex- press the truth of human experience. His most popular full-length play, Rhinoceros (1959), concerns a provincial French town in which all the citizens are metamorphosing into rhinoceroses. Other plays include Exit the King (1962) and A Stroll in the Air (1963). Original music created by Kangaroo Rat: Tim Desrosiers (Accordion, Foot Tambourine and Melodica) and Anna Bell (Glockenspiel). kangarooratmusic.com ACTOR BIOGRAPHIES Sarah Brooke (The Logician, Mrs. Beouf) PRT: SHAKESPEARE PROJECT, BIRDBRAIN, LOYALTIES, FATA MORGANA, WOMAN IN MIND, HAPPY END, RAISED IN CAPTIVITY, A DELICATE BALANCE. In this ground-breaking book, Derek B. Scott examines the cultural transfer of operetta from the German stage to Britain and the USA and offers a historical and critical survey of these operettas and their music. In the period 1900–1940, over sixty operettas were produced in the West End, and over seventy on Broadway. A study of these stage works is important for the light they shine on a variety of social topics of the period – from modernity and gender relations to new technology and new media – and these are investigated in the individual chapters. This book is also available as Open Access on Cambridge Core at doi.org/10.1017/9781108614306. derek b. scott is Professor of Critical Musicology at the University of Leeds.

NASHVILLE COMMUNITY THEATRE: FROM THE LITTLE THEATRE GUILD TO THE NASHVILLE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE A THESIS IN Theatre History Presented to the Faculty of the University of Missouri – Kansas City in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree MASTER OF ARTS by ANDREA ANDERSON B.A., Trevecca Nazarene University, 2003 Kansas City, Missouri 2012 © 2012 ANDREA JANE ANDERSON ALL RIGHTS RESERVED THE LITTLE THEATRE MOVEMENT IN NASHVILLE, TENNESSEE: THE LITTLE THEATRE GUILD AND THE NASHVILLE COMMUNITY PLAYHOUSE Andrea Jane Anderson, Candidate for the Master of Arts Degree University of Missouri - Kansas City, 2012 ABSTRACT In the early 20th century the Little Theatre Movement swept through the United States. Theatre enthusiasts in cities and towns across the country sought to raise the standards of theatrical productions by creating quality volunteer-driven theatre companies that not only entertained, but also became an integral part of the local community. This paper focuses on two such groups in the city of Nashville, Tennessee: the Little Theatre Guild of Nashville (later the Nashville Little Theatre) and the Nashville Community Playhouse. Both groups shared ties to the national movement and showed a dedication for producing the most current and relevant plays of the day. In this paper the formation, activities, and closure of both groups are discussed as well as their impact on the current generation of theatre artists. iii APPROVAL PAGE The faculty listed below, appointed by the Dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, have examined a thesis titled “Nashville Community Theatre: From the Little Theatre Guild to the Nashville Community Playhouse,” presented by Andrea Jane Anderson, candidate for the Master of Arts degree, and certify that in their opinion it is worthy of acceptance.
