HD FEED?: Animal Planet HD has been available since 2007. AVAILABILITY: More than 96 million homes. Programming Strategy ACQUIRED TO ORIGINAL RATIO: Almost all commissioned. SIGNATURE BRANDS: River Monsters , Off the Hook: Extreme Catches , Tanked , Whale Wars . SCHEDULING: Animal Planet is having a very good year, says Andy Weissberg, the VP of pro - gramming and scheduling. “We currently aggressively program the weekends—Fridays, Satur - days and Sundays—into themed blocks, which has led to record ratings. They are tonally themed. Our Fridays are more dramatic programming, with Whale Wars . We have some more personal-ordeal dramatic emotional programming with Infested , Fatal Attractions , Northman’s Law . Then Saturday nights are a little lighter, with big characters. We have the guys from our aquarium-builder show Tanked , Shorty Rossi in Pit Boss , Tia [Torres] in Pitbulls & Parolees , Jack - son Galaxy in My Cat from Hell . Sundays it’s really adventure. We have our biggest show, which is River Monsters ; our second-biggest show right now, Finding Bigfoot ; one of our newest hits, Call of the Wildman , with The Turtleman; and Gator Boys , which is doing really well for us. The rest of the week, Monday through Thursday, are encores of our successful prime-time series as well as natural-history blocks. We’ve found that natural history has really been a strong, effective counter-programming tool.” Late night features repeats of prime-time programming. Daytime has a slightly older, female skew, with a slate of pet programming such as Animal Cops . ACQUISITIONS: “We’ll occasionally do an acquisition, if it complements our strategy,” Weissberg says. From the U.S., Animal Planet recently acquired the basic-cable premieres of Disneynature IMAX films. From the international market, the channel has made select natural-history purchases, and has acquired Animal Cops from ITV. “We’re open to things that could complement our prime pro - gramming as well, it doesn’t have to be natural history.” COMMISSIONING: Discussing Animal Planet’s commissioning remit, Weissberg says that the main growth area is “character-based shows. You have these larger-than-life characters like Brett and Wayde from Tanked . They are kind of like Abbott and Costello; they’re a comedy team and they’re really people who can laugh at yet relate to. Ernie “The Turtleman” from Call of the Wildman is someone who fills the screen and you just want to watch him. We have a new show called Off the Hook: Extreme Catches , which stars a pro wrestler named “Showtime” Eric Young. He has a passion for fishing. He’s going to be doing all these extreme fishing expeditions around the country. It’s about these people you can identify with yet are also entertained by.”

U.S. Cable & Satellite Channels 2012 11 Weissberg continues, “We’re also getting into the competition space next year with Top Hooker , which pits fishermen against each other while performing over-the-top, extremely difficult but fun fishing challenges.” CO-PRODUCTIONS: The channel does a small number of co-productions, mostly with British outfits on natural-history titles. “We co-produce on some of our most successful series,” Weissberg says. “ River Mon - sters , we co-produce with Icon. Infested is with Darlow Smithson. Fatal Attraction is with OSF. These shows have really high-end production values and dramatizations. It makes it more cost effective to co-produce it. They also play well and sell well internationally for our co-production partners. So it’s a win-win.” SHOPPING LIST: “We’re almost exclusively looking for prime-time programming; that’s our primary focus. It has to have characters that pop off the screen. It has to be in an interesting world that you probably haven’t seen before or been exposed to. The thing that differentiates us from any other network is having an emotional human-animal interaction in it, that’s important to us.” INTERNATIONAL DISTRIBUTION: “We have an international distribution deal with ITV for a certain number of hours per year. We have our international division at Discovery who also buy into our commissions, so then we own it worldwide and they have the international rights. Then we also have an in-house distribution arm that sells rights to the world market. Our programming goes through many avenues to get out to the world market.” NONLINEAR PLATFORMS: “We typically acquire rights for all the nonlinear platforms that we can. Our programming is offered across VOD, iTunes, mobile and on our website. We’ve started offering on our website full-length episodes. We have mobile versions of the network. We feel the more ex - posure, the better. There is some thought that it could cannibalize, but we don’t feel that; you have to go with the flow.” Making Contact PITCH ROUTE: producers.discovery.com.
