Let Go & Let God By Laura Scanlan [email protected]

Beloved Sons and Daughters of God, pretty much everyone grew up with the Golden Rule, “Do to others as you would have them do to you.” Unfortunately, these words are not practiced a lot today. Just listen to the 6:00pm news.

This Gospel is a continuation of last week’s Gospel of Luke, Chapter 6. Jesus is still talking to those individuals who were with Him during the sermon on the plain. Jesus knew some of the individuals in the crowd were from the upper class of the community. How did Jesus know this? As he looked at the crowd, only the elite of the community would have two (2) coats, or would be the target of beggars and thieves, or would have surplus wealth to spend.

In the Mediterranean culture of Jesus’ time, the Golden Ash Wednesday Rule was reciprocity meaning it was a give and take or March 6th is Ash Wednesday, which back and forth exchanges between people. There were marks the beginning of 2019’s Lent three (3) types of reciprocity, general reciprocity, balanced season, a 40-day period dedicated to reciprocity and negative reciprocity. The general reciprocity reflection, prayer and fasting ahead of would be like a parent child relationship. A parent would Easter. Ash Wednesday is not a Holy Day not expect anything back from their children for the care of Obligation, but it is the start of the provided to them. Balanced reciprocity characterizes season of Lent and an important day in the neighborly relations. From experience if you borrowed life of the Church. something or loaned someone money it would always be returned. Negative reciprocity describes relations with St. John XXIII Ash Wednesday Mass strangers. If a stranger would enter a village they were Schedule is as follows: provided wonderful hospitality with no expectation of 8:30 a.m. Mass receiving anything in return. This hospitality was provided Noon Scripture Service to protect one’s family. A stranger would not hurt the 7:00 p.m. Mass individual providing hospitality and therefore the family would be safe. Please join us this Ash Wednesday!

Jesus is telling the crowd that everyone should be treated like strangers or family members. They should provide to others especially the poor and expect nothing in return. As Collecting you can see, Jesus’ teaching was totally different from the culture of His day. Old Palms

We need to practice the Golden Rule. I realize The ashes used sometimes it is hard however this is when we let go and let on Ash God. Wednesday are made from the burning of palms blessed in the previous year’s Palm Sunday celebration. Please deposit your unwanted old blessed palm branches in the container in the parish social hall. The palms will be burned and the ash used on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. 8 | February 24, 2019 Simple and Effective Ways To Share Your Catholic Faith With Others ü Spend some time in silent reflection. Start with five minutes a day. Try to visualize darkness, calmness, nothingness, peace. Block out other thoughts. God will “break-in” when He wants. You will recognize him. ü Spend some time with nature. Thank God for his creation and His incredible creativity. ü When an inappropriate thought crosses your mind, turn it around into something for which you can praise God’; then, do so. ü Tell God you love Him regularly and spontaneously. ü Tell others you love them, too.
