Access Locks of Ellesmere Port Welcome to our 2nd Festival at the National Waterways Museum,

Canals and ale have always been linked. Raw materials for were carried around the country on canal barges and, more famously, the canalside pub frequented by passing bargees is a much loved part of our rural and urban landscape.

We’re continuing this tradition by offering the best real ale from around the canals and rivers of the UK. Titanic Brewery in Stoke on Trent have helped us set up this festival and have brought two of their along, Engine Room and Chocolate and Vanilla . Not only is Stoke on Trent at the heart of the UK canal network but the Titanic herself was in many ways a ‘Liverpool ship’ and the skyline of this historic port can be seen from the museum.

We’re delighted to welcome two ales, Cherry and White and Priory Pale, from Gloucester Brewery, a new brewery established in the buildings of the Gloucester Waterways Museum down at the Quays, next to the River Severn. Bath is home to a famous stretch of the Kennet and Avon Canal and Bath Ales with Gem. Otter Brewery is based in Honiton in Devon, on the River Otter and was an important trade route in the early days of the canals. York, with its famous riverside setting on the Ouse, supplies the Yorkshire Terrier from the eponymous brewery.

Tring Brewery, on the Grand Union Canal send us their Side Pocket For A Toad and Squadron Scramble. Lymestone’s Ein Stein comes from Stone in Staffordshire, with the —the through Nottingham is the home to the Castle Rock Brewery with their Harvest Pale. Also based in Nottingham is the Blue Mon- key brewery with BG Sips. But more appropriate for this weekend the brewery was founded in Ilkeston, which is the name of our newly restored canal boat which is return- ing from a summer in London on Sunday!

Okaham Brewery with Inferno is based in Peterborough, a town with links to the River Nene and the out of the way cruising country of the Fens. Offbeat Brewery, with the Outlandish Pale is based in Crewe, but we’ve let them in because of the links between our own Shropshire Union canal here and the railway companies based in Crewe!

The Salopian Brewery is cheating a bit as the canal to Shrewsbury is under restoration, but the Hop Twister is too good to turn down. Also bending the rules is the award winning Trade Winds from the Cairngorm Brewery. Well, it’s not a million miles from the Caledonian Canal!
