  • Summer Solstice Summer Solstice June 20, 2021 9:32 PM
Weather Forecast Office Summer Solstice Albuquerque, NM 2021 Updated: June 16, 2021 10:43 PM MDT Summer Solstice June 20, 2021 9:32 PM MDT The Northern Hemisphere summer solstice will occur at 9:32 pm MDT on June 20, 2021. This date marks the official beginning of summer in the Northern Hemisphere, occurring when Earth arrives at the point in its orbit where the North Pole is at its maximum tilt (about 23.5 degrees) toward the Sun, resulting in the longest day and shortest night of the calendar year. (By longest “day,” we mean the longest period of sunlight hours.) On the day of the June solstice, the Northern Hemisphere receives sunlight at the most direct angle of the year (see the images below). nasa.gov NWS Albuquerque weather.gov/abq Weather Forecast Office Summer Solstice Albuquerque, NM The Seasons Updated: June 16, 2021 10:43 PM MDT We all know that the Earth makes a complete revolution nasa.gov around the sun once every 365 days, following an orbit that is elliptical in shape. This means that the distance between the Earth and Sun, which is 93 million miles on average, varies throughout the year. The top figure on the right illustrates that during the first week in January, the Earth is about 1.6 million miles closer to the sun. This is referred to as the perihelion. The aphelion, or the point at which the Earth is about 1.6 million miles farther away from the sun, occurs during the first week in July. This fact may sound counter to what we know about seasons in the Northern Hemisphere, but actually the difference is not significant in terms of climate and is NOT the reason why we have seasons.

  • COVID-19 Update June 20, 2020
COVID-19 Update June 20, 2020 As of June 19, 2020, at 8:30 PM, the total of laboratory-confirmed and probable COVID-19 cases reported among Connecticut residents is 45715; including 43763 laboratory-confirmed and 1952 probable cases. One hundred fifty patients are currently hospitalized with laboratory-confirmed COVID- 19. There have been 4251 COVID-19-associated deaths. In Connecticut during the early months of this pandemic, it became increasingly clear that it would be necessary to track probable COVID-19 cases and deaths, in addition to laboratory-confirmed (RT-PCR) cases and deaths. This was needed to better measure the burden and impact of this disease in our communities and is now part of the national surveillance case definition for COVID-19. Probable cases of COVID-19 involve persons who have not had confirmatory laboratory testing (RT-PCR) performed for COVID-19, but whose symptoms indicate they are likely to have a COVID-19 infection. In Connecticut, most of the probable COVID-19 cases involve persons whose death certificates list COVID-19 disease or SARS-CoV-2 as a cause of death or a significant condition contributing to death. Prior to June 1, probable and confirmed cases were reported together. Overall Summary Total** Change Since Yesterday COVID-19 Cases 45715 +158 COVID-19-Associated Deaths 4251 +13 Patients Currently Hospitalized with COVID-19 150 -22 COVID-19 PCR Tests Reported 389703 +11772 **Includes confirmed plus probable cases COVID-19 Cases and Associated Deaths by County of Residence As of 06/19/20 8:30pm. Includes patients tested at the State Public Health Laboratory, hospital, and commercial laboratories.
