Keywords: Bollywood, Sikh, Sikh Character, War, Drama, Crime, Biopic, Action, Diljit Dosanhj, Punjab Abstract Sikhs have been ordinarily spoken to in mainstream Hindi film either as courageous warriors or as classless rustics. In the patriot message in which the envisioned was an urban North Indian, Hindu male, Sikh characters were uprooted and made to give entertainment. Bollywood stars have donned the turban to turn Sikh cool, Sikhs view the representation of the community in Bollywood as demeaning and have attempted to revive the Punjabi film industry as an attempt at authentic self-representation. But with the passage of time the Bollywood makers experimented with the role and images of Sikh character. Sunny Deol's starrer movie Border and Gadar led a foundation of Sikh identity and real image of Sikh community and open the doors for others. This paper examines representation of Sikhs in new Bollywood films to inquire if the romanticization of Sikhs as representing rustic authenticity is a clever marketing tactic used by the Bollywood. Introduction Bollywood is the sobriquet for India's Hindi language film industry, situated in the city of Mumbai, Maharashtra. It is all the more officially alluded to as Hindi film. The appellant in the present matter is Doordarshan who have decided not to telecast the documentary film made by the respondent titled "Father, son and Holy War". The respondent is a filmmaker. The respondent no.1 in 1995 submitted his documentary film, "Father, son and Holy War", to the appellant for telecast on National network Doordarshan. Respondent no.1 was to provide a U-matic Certificate for the same to be aired by Doordarshan. The documentary film was in two parts, the film dealt with social realities and issues such as patriarchy, violence, fundamentalism, suppression of women etc. Part-I was given 'U' Certificate and Part-II was given 'A' Certificate by the Censor Board. A few lines about the film and the producer:- Father, Son and Holy War is the third part of a trilogy of documentary films against communal violence that the author made from the mid 1980's to the mid 1990's. His two earlier films In Memory of Friends (1990) (on building communal peace in strife torn Punjab) and Ram Ke Naam/In the Name of God (1992) (on the Ayodhya crisis) looked at the question of class and caste. Both films won National Awards but both were rejected by Doordarshan on the grounds that they would create law and order problems. -
Realism and Fantasy in Hindi Cinema
Excerpt • Temple University Press Introduction M ir r o r a n d L a m p n 2013 India celebrated a hundred years of cinema. During its century this cinema, and in particular Hindi-language popular cinema, arguably the Imost important of several cinema industries in the Subcontinent, has been both mirror and lamp—reflecting “Indianness” back to Indians at home and abroad, but also shaping Indianness. Movie-going in India is a special sort of pleasure—for many affording rare access to privacy, a sometimes three-hour- long respite from noise and heat in an air-conditioned, carpeted interior, where one can be alone with oneself among others, in the dark. This pleasure neces- sarily induces a different relation to interior, psychic space, without having to submit to sleep, even absenting the enjoying ego from the enjoyment: this is as close to accessing (unconscious) desire as most ever come, and could even be considered a kind of wild psychoanalysis. For many Indians without the means, it affords opportunities to travel (“transport”?), if only on the wings of fan- tasy: to alternative realities, foreign locales, alien cultures, unfamiliar aesthet- ics of self and unaccustomed social arrangements, pleasurable disorientations of everyday life. The “dream machine” is also a space-time travel machine— “motion” pictures move us to different zones, to unaccustomed emotions. Sitting in darkened cinema theaters in India, the spectator might also be struck by how often Indianness itself is what is being screened—in both senses. Hindi cinema has been, to change metaphors, a “dream machine,” producing images of collective or national identity that, with every iteration, prove more transitional, contradictory, and elusive or enable us to screen truths about our- selves from ourselves. -

Anand Patwardhan A new film by Anand Patwardhan is a major event. Not only is Patwardhan arguably India’s leading documentarian, a multi-award-winning filmmaker of global acclaim. His films are also epic in their scope, ambition—and length. Reason, in its TIFF release, clocks in at four hours and twenty minutes long. Watching it is an immersive experience, and one not quickly forgotten. Patwardhan is best known for tracking the rise of the Hindu right in films such as Ram ke Naam (In the Name of God) (1992) and Father, Son, and Holy War (1995). With 2011’s Jai Bhim Comrade, he turned his attention to Dalit activism, especially in western India (“Dalit” is the preferred term for the groups formerly known as “Untouchables”). -

Rowman & Littlefield, 2019, 283 pp. Darshana Chakrabarty Among the many film industries of South Asia, the Indian film industry is the most prolific, specifically Hindi language film, more commonly known as Bollywood, which produces almost four hundred films annually. Bollywood films dominate the national market. These films have also been exported successfully to parts of the Middle East, Africa, and the Asiatic regions of the former Soviet Union, as well as to Canada, Australia, the UK, and the US. The success of these films abroad is largely down to the presence of Indian communities living in these regions; as the conventional melodramatic plot structures, dance numbers and musicals tend to deter Western audiences. Within India and abroad “the traditional division between India’s popular cinema and its ‘art’ or ‘parallel’ cinema, modelled after India's most prestigious film-director Satyajit Ray, often produced the uncritical assumption that Indian films are either ‘Ray or rubbish’” (Chaudhuri 137). Recently, Indian film criticism has begun focusing on popular Indian cinema, assessing the multi-discursive elements of the cinematic creations. Bollywood “gained prominence within academia due to its growing popularity and unique manner of glorifying Indian familial values” (Sinha 3).
