also a departure of sorts as Travers began “dabbling” heavily in keyboards. Quickly, Crash And Burn became Travers’s second consecutive Top 30 gold album. Wearing glasses and sporting a short “preppy type” haircut, a “new” Pat Travers re-emerged onto the scene in 1981 with an even heavier keyboard influenced record entitled Radio Active. With his new “college professor” look and without Cowling, Aldridge, and Thrall in the band to “bring it home” live, the less “rocking” Radio Active album failed to appeal Travers core audience (or anyone else) and barely reached the Top 50. Over the next couple of years Travers got back to basics with albums like Black Pearl and Hot Shot. His tune I La La Love You was featured on the Valley Girl movie soundtrack and he even enjoyed airplay on the fledgling MTV network in 1984 with a video for the song “Just Another Killer Day.” He continued touring with other such top-name acts as Kiss and Rainbow, however, in 1984 “hair metal” was already becoming the craze and bands like Motley Crue, Quiet Riot, and Ratt quickly began challenging “dinosaurs” like Blue Oyster Cult and Foghat for prime chart positions. Since then Travers continued to tour and is still a wildly popular attraction overseas and on the U.S. club scene. In recent years he’s gone back to his blues roots releasing records like 1993’s Blues Tracks and his current album, 2005’s PT=MC2. RODNEY CROWELL Sunday, April 23th, 2 PM

16 BLOCKS Starring: Bruce Willis, Mos Def, David Morse. Rated: PG13 This is yet another film in which old Bruce plays a depressed, bored and indifferent cop. His NYPD detective Jack Mosely is tired, fat and a lush. One day he gets an assignment to transport a petty thief, Eddie Bunker (Def) from the lock-up to the court house where the punk is suppossed to testify against some bad cops. Hell, its only 16 blocks away! Corrupt associates of Mosely will stop at nothing to render Bunker dead. Suddennly Jack & Eddie are on the lam with the no-good cops in hot pursuit. David Morse turns in a nice performance as Jack’s old partner, the heel-with-a-badge. Director Richard Donner of Lethal Weapon fame provides ample shootouts and loads of action, taking place in buildings, subways, laundries and even on a city bus. Die Hard fans of Willis will love it but for Bruce it may well be just another paycheck. C

THE HILLS HAVE EYES Starring: Aaron Stanford, Ted Levine, Kathleen Quinlan, Dan Byrd and Robert Joy. Rated: R. Running Time: 100 Minutes In this joyless re-telling of the 1977 cult favorite, once again a family finds peril in the desert. On a road trip from Cleveland to San Diego, the family in question is attacked one night by cannibalistic mutants. These unsympathetic creatures are the genetic results of miners who were exposed to radioactive fallout back in the day. They thrive on killing and dismembering their victims. In the world of horror films the original was groundbreaking and many flicks of similar inspiration came after including the recent “Wrong Turn”. The graphic and grisly violence is somewhat disturbing and only somewhat moving. As the film ends you see that the “Eyes” in the title are still watching. Smell that? Desert Mutants part 2? C

RUNNING SCARED Starring: Paul Walker, Chazz Palimentari. Rated: R This film has the distinction of being “Critically Acclaimed” to be awful by critics from coast to coast. I disagree. In an effort to put my money where my mouth is, I recommended it to my Mom & Dad. They hated it. (Running Scared had my associate Franco Dean running with a one way ticket to the concession stand. No return in sight) Paul Walker plays a small time hood who along with the mob & the cops areracing to find a missing gun that was used in a crime. It’s a life and death race against time. Super violence and extensive bad language along with an unpredictable plot will either send you to running for the exits or have you delighting in the ride. B+ Greg Kimple D+ Franco Dean

he Federal Reserve System was covertly and unconstitutionally created byT European bankers in December of 1912. I know what you’re thinking. So what? Why should I care about something so seemingly trifling? Well, ‘tis the season as they say, so I thought you might want to know the truth about the Federal Reserve Banks’ goon squad: the IRS. The Internal Revenue Service is the collection agency for the Federal Reserve. All of the money you pay in income tax goes to this private corporation. Not one cent of income tax goes into the Treasury of the U.S. I know this raises a lot of questions, but don’t worry, I’ll give you the scoop. It all started with a secret meeting on Jekyll Island, Georgia in November of 1910. Wait! Don’t get bored yet, there’s some good stuff about 6 inches down. Anyway, this meeting, convened by Senator Nelson Aldrich (paternal grandfather of Rockefeller), was attended by interests of the Rockerfeller, Rothschild, Morgan families. What was this secret meeting about? The main concern was how to fund a ‘Central Bank’. This had been tried twice before and failed both times. President Andrew Jackson said this: “You are all a nest of vipers and thieves, and by the grace of the almighty God, I will root you out!”, to end the second attempt to create a central bank in the United States. The third time around, the European banking interests knew they couldn’t use the term ‘central bank’ again, so they devised the phrase ‘Federal Reserve System’. Originally there were only four Federal Reserve banks. Now, I think there are twelve. All answer to the main branch in New York. Like I said before they are a private corporation, and not a part of the U.S. government. And remember, these guys take all your money. At any rate, the 16th Amendment was supposedly ratified in December of 1913. I wish I had the space to tell the whole sordid story, but I don’t. Even though most of us conspiracy nuts question the validity of the ratification of the 16th Amendment, which states. ‘Congress shall have the power to lay and collect taxes on income, from whatever source derived .’, it doesn’t really make a difference. This amendment was written to clear up a Supreme Court battle over whether income from property sales was to be directly or indirectly taxed. It gave no new taxation powers to the government, but the important thing is that it seemed to do so. The Federal Reseve boys were now clear for take off. And they did. At the time the U.S. had no national debt. We now (at the time of this writing) owe over 8 trillion dollars. To be exact we owe: $8,818,950,903,647.33. There’s no need to be exact, though, because the debt rises $2.10 billion per day. Yikes! How much is that exactly? Well, that’s $27,718,82 for every man woman and child that lives (legally) in America. Now how are you gonna get that kinda scratch from a baby for crying out loud? To whom do we owe this tremendous unpayable debt? Yeah man, the Federal

Reserve scumbags. Ok, maybe not all of it, but most of it. In actuality we could sell every piece of land in America, and every building on that land, and everything in those buildings, and still owe the Federal Reserve Bank two more Americas! Is it getting scary yet? There are 50 Titles of U.S. Code. The Code relevant to the I.R.S. is Title 26. In order to be considered ‘positive law’, that is, law that governs all people, each code must be published in the Federal Register and approved by Congress. Since Title 26 has not been published in the Federal Register or approved by Congress it is considered ‘Prima Facia’ law, and not positive law. What this means, basically, is that it applies in certain special cases, and, if proven irrelevant, does not apply. Well, what kind of special cases? Originally, the tax code applied to “all officers, employees, and officials of the U.S. government.” This was in 1862. It applies to only Federal employees, and only those who made over 600 bucks a year. Title 26 is still on the books, and it still says the same thing. Ok, so are you as pissed off as I am yet? Let’s do some thing about it. I mean, I didn’t get into fractional reserve banking (which is my biggest gripe), or what ‘sources’ means in the 16th Amendment, or what ‘income’ is, but believe me, it doesn’t apply to us. So what can we do? Well, for starters, there’s always my favorite two words: tax revolt. Yeah!! Let’s all riot in the streets, and shoot our guns in the air, and smoke our pot, and play music really loud, and YEEEEEAAAAHHHHH!!! Just don’t tell anybody, I don’t want to get branded a terrorist. Another one of my bright ideas is ‘Banking Day’. Now my friends don’t agree with me on this, but I still think I’m right. I think one day out of every year, say, oh, June 26th because it’s nice and warm by then, we all take all of our money out of all the banks. Just for one day. Then put it back in the next day. What would this do? This would immediately stop the aforementioned fractional reserve banking system we have in our country, and would devastate the Federal Reserve. Of course, there are good odds that it may reign economic havoc and destruction upon us for a while, but hey man, sometimes you just gotta stand up for your rights, no matter what the cost. I admit this has nothing to do with taxes, but the Feds would have a hissy-fit! Ok, here is my favorite plan, and we can actually do this. I say we file a class action lawsuit against the I.R.S. Isn’t that what this country has come to anyway? If you don’t like something, file a lawsuit, right? Ok, so we ALL file a lawsuit against the Internal Revenue wang heads, and at best, they will exist no more, and at worst, well...at least we had a little fun. In all seriousness, though, I think this would work. The only problem is, I know all kinds of people on this planet, except for a lawyer.

Judge me, O God, and plead my cause against an ungodly nation: O deliver me from the deceitful and unjust man. Psalms 43

JAMFEST AT FLORIDA DISCOUNT MUSIC

fter being postponed for several months due to the unpre- dictable recent hurricane season, our friends Mike and LisaA DellaCioppa at Florida Discount Music in Melbourne were finally able to stage their annual outdoor parking lot Jamfest on Sunday afternoon, March 12th. There was food, drink, live music, friends, fans, fun, and this time... picture perfect weather! Local music enthusiasts enjoyed live sounds from a smorgasbord of area bands including such favorites as Black Eyed Soul (photo), Ozone, True Stereo Types, Fat Tater, Kenworth, and David Pastorius’ new project Pearl Bailey. The event was staged to raise money for the national Humane Society in hopes of helping the little kitties, puppies, lions, tigers, and bears (oh my) who fell victim to the recent Gulf Coast hurricanes. It was a great event with a great purpose. Although the exact dollar amount brought in by the concert was unknown at press time, organizer Lisa DellaCioppa was “delighted” with the turnout, calling the event a “huge suc- cess”. Chris Long

The Talk Of Town: STEVIE COCHRAN RETURNS!! ong-time Brevardian and blues monster Stevie Cochran is back after a 1-month, 15 show tour of Europe. Headliner StevieL played the blues at various venues throughout Switzerland, Italy and France including the infamous Blues House in Milano, Italy. The blues trio traveled Europe mostly in a passenger van. One of Stevie’s favorite venues is the Pisoni Keller, which contributed to a Live CD set produced by Brevard’s own Kenny Clarke. The BMA award nominated Kenny Clarke is also highlighted in the trio on keyboards/ bass. The former Nassau County, Long Island, NY native began his career in 1966 playing 60’s rock. Guitar and bass also. In high school he converted to guitar only and had his own bar band at 17. Stevie jammed with Muddy Waters at 18 but now his focus is on his blues based progressive and beyond original rock. Stevie is the primary writer and vocalist and the band does some blues covers.

Brian Bobb: YESTERDAY’S HERO SINGS THE BLUES

ast fall he was a hero: Brian Bobb was walking along theL beach in Indialantic when he heard a swimmer calling for help. The “boardwalk musician” didn’t hesitate to jump into the water and help the would-be drowning victim, 29-year-old Jeremiah Chapman, safely to the beach. But this is not the happy ending. Once the paramedics arrived, they found the rescuer, Brian Bobb, laying face down - he had suffered a heart attack, survived but became partially disabled. “I cannot perform my job as a building contractor like I did before,” says Brian who owns Design by Brian Inc. “I have my good days and my bad days.” Therefore funds are running low, and Brian is singing the blues. To support himself during these hard times, Brian sells his CD with the song “Rescue Sea” that he wrote after the incident for $5 at his gigs. You can see Brian Bobb perform regularly at East Coast Cafe (corner Eau Gallie Cswy/ S. Patrick Drive) and on the boardwalk in Indialantic.

Brevard Live April 2006 - 51 Art olanda Schofield in brevard Yfinds great joy in her by Lou Belcher artwork. It’s wonderful to have such a passion for your work. For example, early in her career she designed window displays for women’s specialty shops. To this day, she remembers that first job fondly. “I would wake up too early to go to work. I enjoyed it so much,” she said.

Art has always been the center of Schofield’s life. Her mother recognized her talent early on and encouraged her, providing private tutors to help develop her talents. Schofield attended Boston University where she earned a BS degree in applied art education. After college, she began window display work (first in Boston, then Hartford, and later in New York). As a freelance artist, clients often called her to design backgrounds for fashion shows, and she found herself especially busy during the holidays. Display work had it all. She loved the three- dimensional composition – the line, design, and color – of it. As she said, “What more could you want?” Schofield’s husband worked for the Boy Scouts of America. In 1963, he was transferred to the Transatlantic Council in Europe. First they lived in Germany for six months, and then they moved to Italy for two and a half years. When they moved to Europe, Schofield was forced to move beyond display work. During that time, she produced many watercolor sketches – a combination of pen, ink, and watercolor. She also painted with oils. To capture the essence of Italy, she focused on the antiquities and landmarks. This YOLANDA SCHOFIELD focus became a recurrent theme of her artwork that has continued to this day. Schofield reminisced that living in Italy, “…was a dream. I’d walk down the streets and think that this is like a stage set.” When they returned to the United States in 1966, Schofield and her husband lived in Massachusetts. At that time, she began a career teaching art to first grade through junior high students in the public schools. In 1973, her husband’s job moved them to Geneva, New York. She taught art in the parochial schools in Geneva for four more years before Schofield decided to go out on her own and draw for a living. She loved being near the Finger Lakes and once again became inspired by the many historic landmarks of that area of New York. She drew a landmark or two and took them to the editor of the paper and proposed that the paper run a series of articles where they would periodically publish one of her drawings with her text of its historical background. The paper accepted her proposal and published her historic works from 1975 until 1992.

52 - Brevard Live April 2006 These publications brought attention to her drawings, and she started to receive commissions to draw people’s homes and other historic buildings in the area. In addition to private commissions, she received commissions from hospitals, banks, VISA companies, colleges (Syracuse University, Hobart and William Smith Colleges, Keuka College), Boy Scouts (for calendars and drawings), Girl Scouts (for posters), and Ducks Unlimited, who hired her to do their annual print. During her time in the Finger Lakes, Schofield spent a good deal of time investigating and drawing the ruins of the Erie Canal. This resulted in a series of nineteen drawings, which she just recently sold as a set to the Lions National Bank. And, she was one of eight artists asked to exhibit in the World Canals Conference in 2000. Brevard County is lucky that Schofield extended her interest in historic landmarks to Florida when she and her husband retired and moved to Palm Bay in 1990. After moving to Florida, she soon followed her interest in history and was commissioned to draw a visualization of Fort Ann on Merritt Island. To make the drawing, she had to slog through woods with a guard from Cape Canaveral to reach the site of the original fort, and then she visited Fort Christmas in Christmas, Florida, to see the reconstruction of a fort of similar style. Schofield has drawn many buildings and historic landmarks in this area. She is committed to preserving the history of our county. Her statement that, “When putting in new developments, developers should be made to restore one or two historic landmarks,” shows her point on this issue. She sees it as a way we can continually replenish what is important to all of us. Since moving to Florida, Schofield has been active in the Strawbridge Art League. She has been involved in the planning of three exhibits focusing on landmarks and Florida, and she is currently the chairperson for Landmarks—Our Heritage, which will be on exhibit at the Henegar Center for the Arts in May. This exhibit will focus on ten Brevard County historic landmarks. Each year ten more landmarks will be featured and the members of the Strawbridge Art League will depict these historic treasures through their favorite mediums. Schofield hopes this will bring attention to the importance of our heritage. To contact Schofield about her work or about the upcoming exhibit, call 728-1543.
