Our Regional Commissioner, Marion Rankin looks back on her favoutire moments of the year past

As we head towards the darker days of winter it is good to take time to we reflect on our successes in the year 2017-2018.

Census recorded another rise. With our total membership reaching 9,561 in January 2018. This was a rise of 3.3% in youth and gratifyingly 8.9% adults. The continued expansion reflects the good programme being provided by our Groups and Units across the Region, encouraging recruitment and retention of youth and adults.

Groups throughout the Region took part in events, camps and competitions. A number of Districts sent teams to Zonal heats of the annual Scottish Camping competition and we were delighted that teams reached the finals with 183rd Glasgow being placed in the top three.

Summer 2017 saw an exodus abroad of Groups and Units for overseas trips. The Region supported an Explorer Belt with 86 participants. Starting from a base at Zellhof in teams journeyed within , Austria and the . Post expedition, the group enjoyed downtime in theme parks and further opportunities for high adventure based at Kandersteg. I am grateful to all those leaders (and their families) who give of their time not only for the trips themselves but for the planning and preparation starting months or even years ahead.

In July/August 2017, Auchengillan hosted the fifth Auchengillan Jamboree. Not our driest event of this sort, indeed on site opportunities for canoeing made themselves apparent. Nothing daunted, a great time was had by all from the opening Fun Fair to the closing Paint Party. Yes it was the Regional Commissioner looking like a sea monster when someone tipped a bag of green paint over her.

Provision for younger sections was again enhanced by Badgetastic in November, hundreds of bouncing Beavers doing what they do best (being very enthusiastic) at Auchengillan and gaining skills and badges.

We started 2018 with another successful Subzero event. Very cold but very lively and the pool parties yet again a highlight.

This short reflection on the activities of the year gives me an opportunity to note that the success of Scouting in Clyde is, I believe, in part due to our ability to mix the tried, trusted and traditional with the new. Seizing new ideas and developing them lets us give our members young and old a chance to enhance their Skills for Life.

Thank you to all for their work this year and for the work which will continue into 2018/19 and beyond.

Dr. Marion Rankin Regional Commissioner (Scotland).

July/August 2017 saw Auchengillan Outdoor Centre host AJ’17 with 811 Scouts/Guides, 165 Explorer Scouts/Girlguiding Senior sections and 234 adult leaders attending for a week of fun and international adventure. The month of November saw the now popular Badgetastic for Beaver Scouts attracting more than 780 Beaver Scouts and 132 adult leaders for the day from 40 Scout Groups across the West of Scotland. It was great to see Strathcalder and Dunbartonshire Districts had both brought whole Districts.

In February 2018, the ever popular Sub Zero event returned with almost 1,000 young people and adults in camp at Auchengillan for a weekend of winter activities which included paintball, a silent disco, Segways and off road buggies.

There is no doubt that Auchengillan Outdoor Centre provides a much needed facility where Clyde Region can support the development for the 50% outdoors and adventurous programme that our local Groups have been challenged to deliver.

The Glasgow Scout Shop exists to provide direct support to Clyde Scouts through the sale of a variety of Scouting goods. During the year under review, we had a number of changes in the staff team at The Glasgow Scout Shop. Ally Bower left after 13 years as Scout Shop Manager and David Love who had been our Sales Supervisor for the last 7 years also moved on to pastures new.

Avondyke campsite, situated just outside Stonehouse has been used by a number of local Scout Groups during the year to provide an opportunity for greenfield camping.

Following discussions with volunteers from Calder District, it was agreed to form a Scout Active Support Unit to look at how Coltswood is used. These volunteers have been busy doing works around the site this past year and progress will be reviewed later in 2018.

In September 2017, a review of how the employed staff team was supported was carried out and resulted in a number of changes being made to the staff team. Gary Bainbridge took up post as Chief Operating Officer in September 2017, the day to day operations of the Scout Shop is now led by our Scout Shop Team Leader Jackie Craig. We also saw the departure of our long serving Manager at Auchengillan, Andy Wilson and Claire Taylor took up post as General Manager, Auchengillan with responsibility for the leadership and management of Auchengillan Outdoor Centre.

A wide ranging review of health and safety at Auchengillan has began work during the year and this will continue in to the next year.
