Guide to Archival Repositories in the Manawatū-Whanganui Region 2021

CENTRAL DISTRICTS BRANCH

INTRODUCTION

This is an updated version of the Guide to Manawatu Archival Repositories, which was published more than 10 years ago.

The Archives and Records Association of (ARANZ) Central Districts Branch Committee decided in 2019 to update the guide. Branch Committee members Michael Biggs, Louis Changuion and Catherine Woeber were tasked with updating and expanding the guide as necessary.

The Central Districts Branch covers a significant part of the , so this guide takes in the whole Manawatū-Whanganui region. Guides for other regions that come under the Central Districts Branch will be created in the future.

For stage one all local authorities, museums and certain other institutions in the region were contacted for inclusion in the guide. Stage two will expand this to secondary schools, marae and churches. We would like to thank everyone who took the time to fill out the survey and provide us with their details.

We are happy to receive feedback, corrections and new entries. Please feel free to contact the Central Districts Branch Committee via [email protected].

HOW TO USE THIS GUIDE

This Guide is split into two parts. The first is a list of the repositories that are based within the region and includes a short description of their holdings, the facilities on offer and their contact details.

The second provides an index of the archival collections by District and gives you an idea of who you should contact when you are looking for a particular type of archive. The index is not exhaustive.

Depending on what is held, you may see a single Archival Repository being mentioned in multiple categories or Districts.

The aerial photograph on the cover is of Foxton, dated 15/03/1939.
