Experiential education in the Polar Regions is SOI’s core program and key to bridging cultures and learning first-hand about , ocean conservation, reconciliation and other pressing topics. Beyond expedition, the SOI Foundation connects people, organizations, and funding around ideas, initiatives and programs related to sustainability.

Position Summary SOI’s new Expedition to Community (E2C) program will engage Canadian youth in service opportunities in the four regions, providing participating youth with inspiration, training, mentoring and financial support to co-create service learning opportunities that fit their interests and respond to the key needs of Canada’s Northern communities.

The Expedition to Community (E2C) Coordinator is responsible for overseeing the local development and delivery of the E2C program in their home community. Working in collaboration with the other Local Coordinators from across the North and the E2C Program Manager, the E2C Coordinator provides guidance to and supports the development and implementation of E2C community programming for SOI alumni and non-alumni.

The Local Coordinator is ideally an active member of their community, supporting youth or community initiatives in their current work or volunteer time. They would be open to working with SOI to support youth in service opportunities while balancing their other commitments. The position of E2C Local Coordinator is an 8 month paid part-time (33%) contract starting July 1, 2019 with the possibility for extension. The position is community based, and would require the coordinator’s participation on the 2019 Arctic expedition, beginning with a few days of training in Ottawa, Ontario. The E2C Local Coordinator is a member of the SOIF Alumni Team and reports to the E2C Manager.

Key tasks and responsibilities ● Engaging with local community leaders and organizations and gaining and maintaining their support for the roll out of E2C in the community; ● Promoting E2C within the community and recruiting participants in the program; ● Organizing and leading a kick-off workshop in collaboration with SOI’s E2C program manager and/or other SOI staff; ● Supporting, coaching and mentoring of the participants in E2C in the development and delivery of youth directed community initiatives; ● Organizing end-of program community celebrations focused on sharing, reflecting and learning in collaboration with the participants; ● Tracking program and participant data ● Proving regular updates and progress reports to the E2C program manager; ● Participating in E2C program training and SOI’s 2019 Arctic Expedition (July 18 - August 7th 2019).

The position will likely involve evening or weekend activities created to support young people. These would be scheduled by the coordinator to best suit youth outreach.

Qualifications • Minimum of five years relevant work and/or volunteer experience; • Significant experience working with youth in the community; • Proven ability to liaise with community organizations, community leaders and elders; • Strong project management skills, demonstrated ability to prioritize, coordinate, delegate, and meet deadlines on multiple assignments; • Computer literate and willingness to learn
