This Background Material Stewart was once known by a different name. See the next page for his actual racing history. His great-great-great-grandsire was War Admiral, the horse made famous in our time by the book and movie “Seabiscuit.” War Admiral’s sire was Man O’War, arguably the greatest racehorse ever. Man O’War lost only once, at Saratoga, second to a horse named Upset. Some interesting tidbits about the Seabiscuit story: http://www.chasingthefrog.com/reelfaces/seabiscuit.php A look at the pedigree of Stewart’s grandsire (whose grandsire, in turn, was War Admiral): http:// www.pedigreequery.com/index.php?query_type=horse&search_bar=horse&h=HOIST+THE+FLAG Seabiscuit was also descended from Man O’War (making him a nephew [?] of War Admiral). Seabiscuit’s sire was Hard Tack, out of Tea Biscuit by Man O’War. http://www.pedigreequery.com/ index.php?query_type=check&search_bar=horse&h=seabiscuit&g=5&inbred=Standard&x2=n See the file [download link at the bottom of this note] for Stewart’s Lifetime Performances. Is this cool, or what? Stewart was born in January of 1994 (which makes him 11 as I write this, in January of 2005). He first raced as a 3YO, on the Fourth of July 1997. He ran under the unlikely name of Docquickfixmynose, out of Operate Quick by Blue Ensign ($1,000 stud fee). His grandsire was the famous Hoist the Flag. He (Stewart, that is, as he is now known) ran 25 races, and was in the money almost half the time (2-6-4), winning $13,863 along the way. His highest Beyer rating was 52 on May 4, 1998, in a 6-furlong race at Suffolk Downs, coming in third by only a length. That was also his best time at that distance, 1:13:1. He may have been injured in that race because he didn’t run again at Suffolk, and was out of action for more than 2 months. Later that year (August 25) he won a race at Great Barrington. He raced two more times and retired. I got him the next spring, so I’ve had him almost 6 years now. He started his career at Belmont (2 races) with no drugs. He moved to Monmouth for 2 races, the second of which was with lasix. After that, he always had lasix and bute. He lost his first 4 races by a combined total of 110 lengths — clearly he was not cut out for the big leagues. He then moved to Suffolk for a nice career with the $5,000 claimers (he was never claimed). He raced 16 times there (in the money 9 times), including that last race that may have done him in. He then moved to Rockingham for one race, Great Barrington twice in August, one race at Northampton in September, then back to Great Barrington for his last race on September 20 (1998). What a star! The Legacy and Traditions of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby The Kentucky Derby has taken place annually in Louis- ville, Kentucky since 1875. It was started by Meriwether Lewis Clark, Jr. at his track he called Churchill Downs, and it has run continuously since that first race. This first jewel of the Triple Crown has produced famous winners, with thirteen of these winners gaining that Triple Crown title. Lewis limited the Derby to only 3-year old horses. The race has evolved and grown over time and has changed since its first running, remaining an important event for more than a century. Through the study of the Derby’s influential historic traditions, notable winners and horse farms in Kentucky, and its profound cultural TABLE OF CONTENTS impact, this program will identify and explore these dif- Background and History…..2 ferent aspects that all contribute to the excitement and legacy of the “most exciting two minutes in sports.” Curriculum Standards…..3 Traditions ................ 4-8 Triple Crown ............ 9 Derby Winners ........ 10-11 Notable Horse Farms….12-13 Significant Figures…...15 Bibliography………….16 Image list…………….17-18 Derby Activities…….19-22 To replicate the races he witnessed in Europe, Meri- wether Lewis Clark Jr., the grandson of explorer Wil- liam Clark, created three races in the United States that resembled those he’d attended in Europe. The first meet was in May of 1875. Family ties to the horse racing world led Clark to his purchase of what would become Churchill Downs, named after his uncles, John and Henry Churchill in 1883.
