vander Holyfield belongs in a Hemingway story, where honor and discipline and strength are as real as gravity. At 45, he has a Ebody like an anvil and he’s the only man in history to hold the heavyweight champion- ship four times. But he’s not satisfied. “My goal is to be the undisputed heavyweight champion of the world. Again.” His mission involves tracking down and fighting everyone who holds a belt. From 2000 to 2002, a series of shoulder surgeries slowed him down, cul- minating with the revocation of his boxing license. In a bizarre twist that Holyfield views with amazement and awk- wardness, the publicity he received from his participa- tion in American reality show Dancing with the Stars resulted in the return of his license. Now he’s back chasing belts. He talks about his ultimate triumph as a fact, not a possibility. His next stop might be Beijing. Genuinely impressed with the development of the city since he first visited in 2000, Holy- field is planning to train at Shaolin Temple for a potential fight here in November. A promoter present at our interview hinted that the opponent could be Samuel “Nigerian Nightmare” Peter, the lead-fisted World Boxing Council heavyweight champion. I don’t play chess, ‘cause it’s too slow. Too much thinking. I like reacting. They say I head-butt people. I didn’t do none of that. I may have the hardest head, but I didn’t head-butt nobody … So Tyson leaps off his feet with his head fi rst, then he grabs his head, he says, “Oh, Holyfi eld head-butted me!” How in the world do I head-butt somebody when I don’t lead with my head? At home, they like, “You just like everybody else. So what. You used to be good. But “you ain’t good no more.” In China, they the only ones that say, “You the only man that been the heavyweight champion of the world four times.” This is what they told me.
