If so, how does this benefit Romania? DRomania and the UK are key partners in both the EU and NATO. Our strategic partnership, which was agreed in 2003, recently received a boost when the President of Romania, His Excellency Traian Basescu, paid an official visit to as a guest of Her Majesty’s Government. We share a common vision on Europe; both countries are proud to promote economic growth and compete in a single market in areas such as energy. We both support the enlargement of the EU with countries from the Western Balkans, Turkey and the Republic of Moldova, for instance, and want to reduce the overall burden of EU regulation, which will certainly be benefit companies from both countries. HE Dr Ion Jinga: a strategic partnership We are grateful to the UK Government for its decisive action in in simplifying EU is in trouble due to the eurozone crisis, having a regulations on accessing EU funds. As Romania has positive trade balance with a country like the UK is an important sum of EU money allocated, we need an incentive for continuing in this way. I will come to improve our absorption capacity. This will receive back to our bilateral trade later, because it rightly a boost from the simplified EU spending procedures, accounts for a considerable amount of the Embassy’s and will be key in getting the Romanian economy time and effort here, and is also seen as a concrete back on track and consolidating economic growth. way of putting our strategic partnership into practice. You asked me how this partnership is beneficial for Romania – I am proud to say that “There are more than 4,400 Britain is sixth on Romania’s list of European trading partners, and 11th in the world. It is number British companies operating one among EU partners in terms of trade surplus. Here, the former UK Chancellor of the Exchequer,* gives Cristina Irimie his views on the current crisis, Romania’s development and what he loves most about the country

aving known Romania for decades, how would you describe its current economic challenges on the European front, Hcompared with those of Britain? Considering it is a very, very turbulent world, I think Romania has done quite well. I think Britain has, in some ways, fared relatively worse. Professor Moisa Altar, one of the most highly respected and well known economists in Romania, was a special guest at the press conference to launch the online tool. He explained how misleading the APR can be if not used properly, and said that the APR alone should never be a determining factor when choosing a loan. The university professor portrayed APR as a nice guy, but kind of introverted and unstable. The key to using the APR is to calculate it based on the same factors of amount, repayment period, payment frequency and type of interest, as the value of the APR varies significantly according to these variables. For example, assuming all other factors are the same, the shorter the repayment period, the higher the APR is. This does not necessarily mean that the total amount payable is higher, however. The important thing is to use APR to compare apples with apples, meaning loans with similar characteristics, Professor Altar said.
