A Message from the High School Principal, Mr Gary Norton

THE IMPORTANCE OF PHYSICAL ACTIVITY IN OUR LIVES…

A while back I wrote an article about dealing with exam stress and mentioned the importance of exercise. This week, I would like to make some comments about the overall general importance of physical activity in our lives.

We all know that we are living in times where we eat too much highly processed food, park as close as we can to the shops that we visit, drive rather than walk, etc. We often attribute this behaviour to our busy lives, work-related stress and lack of time.

The effects of regular physical exercise have been researched by many health practitioners, psychologists and educators and the following are some of the confirmed benefits:

 Children who participate in physical activities like sport usually achieve excellent academic results.  Some sports like Archery and Golf enable children to increase concentration levels, especially those who are diagnosed with ADHD.  Team sports generally help children to integrate socially and work together.  Regular physical activity enables children and adults to increase their resistance to many illnesses.  Participation in sports makes children feel good through the release of endorphins.  Physical activity helps to reduce stress levels.  Healthy eating combined with exercise helps to maintain the correct body mass.  Exercise also helps to maintain a healthy cardio-vascular system and bone density.

As children grow older, they need to recognize the health benefits of an active lifestyle and continue making exercise a priority when they become adults. We as parents need to encourage our children to get involved in regular physical activities and to participate ourselves, thereby setting an example to our young ones.

At Marist Brothers Linmeyer we offer a wide range of sports and place great importance on our Physical Education programme, so please encourage your child to become active.

I wish all Parents and Educators who are running the Comrades Marathon an enjoyable, injury-free run on the 10th June.

DAILY REFLECTIONS PRAYER FOR THE WEEK http://www.acatholic.org/ Lord Jesus, your death brought life and freedom. Make me a servant of your love, that I may seek to serve rather than be served. DAILY LITURGICAL READINGS http://www.ewtn.com/daily-readings/

The Month of May

It is the month of May, traditionally a month of special devotion to Mary, our Mother. Mary was given a unique place in the history of the world - arguably the most privileged place of any person. In spite of this, she was not exempt from any challenges or suffering, joy or pleasure in her life. Mary offers to journey with each of us in our own struggles, uniting her prayers to ours, as she points us always in the direction of her Son, Jesus. May we accept her invitation and draw inspiration from her example of living always within God’s Plan of unconditional love.

JOHANNESBURG MINI CITY COUNCIL EASTER EGG COLLECTION

A very big thank you to all our Marist families for donating so many boxes of Easter eggs to the Mini City Council.

In total we collected over 300 000 boxes of Easter eggs. These were distributed to over a hundred charities all over Johannesburg.

With the surplus Easter eggs, we were able to choose three charities of our own to send Easter eggs to. On the Easter weekend, Mrs Cummings and Mrs Durand gave Easter eggs to St Paul’s Church in Mulbarton, the church then passed them onto The Second Noordsig Community near .

Easter eggs were also given to The Boys and Girls Brigade’s Easter Egg Hunt, where they serve to teach children about Christ and also how to play musical instruments.

After their school holiday, children from Robertsham Primary School each received an Easter egg as part of our bread buddies initiative.

Thank you again to everybody for bringing boxes and boxes of Easter eggs!!!

DEVELOPING ORGANISATIONAL SKILLS – Marcelle Niehaus

Many of our little one’s battle with organisational skills at home and at school. To develop these skills, we first need to teach them to organise themselves and their belongings. Here are a few simple ideas to implement at home:

 Put out all clothes, school bags, extra mural togs/items, lunch boxes the night before so your child doesn’t waste time in the morning hunting for these items. As the child gets older they can do this for themselves, with your supervision. It helps to have a weekly timetable up in the kitchen. Each night use this timetable to go through what is happening the next day with your child and what they need to pack.

 Encourage your child to dress him/herself in the mornings before school. With younger children, start with having the child’s clothes in your room and having a dressing race with them. As they improve, advance to having your child dress in his/her own room. Try to reduce the toys/ distractions in the room and give lots of verbal feedback and encouragement.

 To help your child remember the morning routine, take pictures of them doing each step. Include all the things he/she needs to do before going out in the morning (e.g. making bed, getting dressed, eating breakfast, brushing teeth etc.). With older children make a list in the correct sequence. This list can be laminated and your child can use a white board marker to tick off each task as they complete it. As the child improves, include a time factor, e.g. they

LOVE OF WORK FAMILY SPIRIT IN THE WAY OF MARY SIMPLICITY PRESENCE

must be dressed and in the kitchen by 7h00. Use a kitchen timer to help them be aware of the time.

See example above taken from; https://carrotsareorange.com/daily-routine-charts-for-kids/

As our children have day-to-day fluctuations in their performance, be understanding for the days when they are not coping as well. You may need to assist your child with some of the steps.
