The Official Newsletter of the International ® Class Association Zane Reigns in Midwinters Alabamian Zane Yoder Bests 67 by Clinton Edwards Congratulations to Zane Yoder of Fairhope Yacht Club for winning the first Midwinters of the new millennium. Zane's one point lead over Tom Whitehurst of Pensacola Yacht Club at the end of Saturday and Sunday's cancellation of racing due to bad weather assured Zane the victory. It would have been nice to see Zane and Tom battle for the championship as the third place was 20 points out. Seven races were completed allowing for everyone to drop a race. Approximately seventy boats competed in the 2000 US National Midwinters hosted by Fort Walton Yacht Club. Thursday's Team Racing Championship was also cancelled due to bad weather; however, boats did practice on Thursday afternoon after the front passed through. The International Sunfish Masters Championship, attended by 60 aged 40 + sailors from Canada and the US had five races on Sarasota Bay, March 10-12. Winds Friday were light and flukey and two races were sailed. Joe Blouin won two of his four bullets on day 1 and everyone was scratching their heads watching his speed. Saturday came in with blustery, southerly winds hovering around the 18 knot mark. 3 races were sailed with Joe winning 2 more and Peter Branning of Sarasota winning the third. The reaches were wild and fast with positions changing often due to either catching a wave or being submerged by one. Sunday's winds came in with a front, with northerly winds up to 30 knots, so PRO Allan Broadribb canceled races for the day, much to only a few sailors' dismay. Joe won overall and was also first in the Masters bracket. Dick Tillman of Merritt Island, FL, finished second overall and first in Grand Master. Peter was third overall and second in the Master age bracket. Charlie Clifton, was fourth overall and third in the Master Class. Rick Pan tall of Pt. Charlotte was first in the Apprentice Class, and fifth overall. Erik Erickson and Ed Carney of Sarasota were first and second respectively in the Great Grand Master Class. Almost a third of the sailors were women, with Jean Bergman (9th overall) besting the group, followed by Lee Parks (lOth overall). Rita Steele of Sarasota finished 4th in Masters and was 3rd woman. Gail Heausler of Tampa had three good races in the low teens, but was unable to sail the first Charlie Clifton and partner Lois Blodgett round the mark in the 3-legged day. The largest age bracket was the 60-70 year olds, with Don Bergman, Ml race just after David Graham and his partner. finishing second to Tillman and 6th overall. Many thanks to our sponsors, Gold Coast Eagle Distributors, Ullman Sails, Masthead Enterprises, Tackle Shack, Armada Sailboats, The Sunfish Garage, Windline, The Canvas & Rigging Co., NovaBraid and the Sarasota Sailing Squadron.

INT.L Masters·s Beachside . .. by Cindy Clifton It was great to see sunfish sailors again, especially Don and Jean Bergman who camped at the Squadron for a week or more. 61 Masters showed up for the regatta and enjoyed the weather until Sunday when it blew in from the north and races were canceled. Arriving from a wide variety of places, there were lots of "new" masters, in all age groups, including a few Canadians, lots of Don Bergman, who was 6th & 2nd Grand Master Midwesterners, Easterners and Southerners and even Professor Ottenheimer from Kansas. also won the "guess how much line is in the lamp" Everyone enjoyed the evening events which included a shrimp feed and BBQ dinner, all the contest by guessing within 1 ft. of the correct amount. beer one could drink provided by our local Bud Distributor, Gold Coast Eagle Distributing Guesses went from 16 feet to 416 feet. Masters and games put on by Mariella Doyle and her crew of thousands. Sailors were arbitrarily winners front, l-r, Don and the lamp, Lee Parks, 1Oth & 3rd in Apprentice, Peter Branning, 3rd and 2nd assigned a team, with about ten people on each team. The Seniors participated in relay races, in Master, Rick Pantall, 5th & 1st Apprentice, John three legged races, bean spitting, darts, rope tossing, water balloon throwing, flinging flippers, Spray, 7th & 2nd Apprentice, Paul Strauley, 12th and in the end it came down to a Tug of War. If Masters are tough on the water, they are even & 4th Apprentice, Jean Bergman, First Woman, 9th tougher in a show of strength. Although one side was favored with a tree root, everyone held & 4th Grand Master, back: Dick Tillman, 2nd & their own as best they could. Rita's team won overall, and prizes donated by Masthead 1st Grand Master, Charlie Clifton, 4th & 3rd Master, Enterprises, Windline, Ullman Sails, Tackle Shack, Armada Sailboats, Novabraid, Rigging Erick Erickson, 1st Great Grand Master, Courtney and Canvas Co., Greer's Restaurant and The Sunfish Garage were given to each team Young, 8th & 3rd Grand Master, Ed Carney, 2nd member. Thanks to all of the sponsors and everyone that helped put on a fun regatta. Great Grand Master, and Joe missed the picture. 4======Windward Leg - Spring 2000 lnt'l Maste•s March 10-12. 2000 I would like to add a comment to the survey taken at the SSS Masters. As a 75 year old racer I would be a beneficiary of the handicaps but I Sarasota Florida still voted against them. In the unlikely event that I ever won a regatta I 60 boats would like to do it by sailing faster than my competitors and not because a 1 Joe Blouin, Tampa Fl 1 1 1 1 4 12 Ml sailor who finished ahead of me had to give me points. That strikes me as 2 Dick Tillman, Merritt lsl. Fl 5 14 2 2 3 16 Gl charity and would diminish the value of the trophy in my eyes. The existing 3 Peter Branning, Sarasota Fl 3 3 10 3 18 M2 age brackets should be retained as that gives us the opportunity to compete 4 Charlie Clifton, Sarasota Fl 10 20 3 4 2 27 M3 against our peers on an equal basis. 5 Rick Pantall,Pt Charlotte Fl 2 4 II 10 9 37 Al 6 Don Bergman, Holland Ml 15 9 15 5 5 38 02 In 2005 I intend to dominate the 80's division, at least until Don 7 John Spray, Palm Harbor, Fl II II 4 7 7 41 A Bergman attains that age. Ain't life grand? to begin. Cindy Clifton Windward Leg - Spring 2000 ======• IN MEMORIAM Janice Mason: Mahhvelous. Just Mahhvelous by Betsy Schmidt I first met Janice when I was on crutches, having just had my second knee surgery in seven months. She encouraged me to use the new Lewes Yacht Club pool early in the morning (7 a.m.) before anyone else was there. She was there, of course watching over me. Before long, my leg was strong enough to walk on and I found myself in the adult sailing classes. What a hoot! We all had such a great time that summer. Janice taught hundreds- no thousands- of people, young and old alike, to sail. More important than that, ]] gave to all of her pupils the joy of sailing. Janice truly loved life and lived it to the fullest, right up to the very end. For the longest time, I thought you were supposed to yell "Wheeee" when you got up on a screaming plane. It certainly was the way that I was taught. We always did what we were told as that raspy voice barked out orders to us all over the Delaware Bay. What a sight we must have been: Mama Sunfish and all of her battle with the crossing ferries. Years ago, the residents of Lewes Beach could identify each sailor by their different multicolored sails. More recently, the all whit.e sails made that identification more difficult; except for Janice. Everyone could ~fways find her in that little yellow life vest and, of course, the infamous red arrow. Janice was always one of a kind. We will all deeply miss her big smile and contagious laughter during daily water aerobics, that twinkle in her eye when planning her next project it improve the Lewes Yacht Club, the excitement in her step as she rushed out to save someone in distress on the water, or the peaceful end of the day as she sat on her little Yacht Club porch facing the bay with a tall glass of] ohn Begg and water in her hand reflecting on the remarkable sailing of the day and repeating "mahhvelous, just mahhvelous". No sailor will miss her more than her best sailing buddy, Connie Miller. They traveled everywhere together usually coming home with a medal or two, always cQw.ing home with a pocketful of stories of their adventures. Even when she was unable to sail, Janice went to the Worlds. She loved being in the middle of the action. Connie made sure she got to Ponce this fall. They both knew it would be their last big adventure together. When Connie phoned her a couple of weeks ago from the Masters, Janice's daughter put the phone up to her ear so that Janice could hear about the sailing. As usual, Janice took a deep breath and replied (in a very faint voice) "mahhvelous". It was the last word that any of us would hear from Janice but a fitting last word from such an incredibly kind and gifted person. Many people will refer to Janice in the future as a true "Old Salt" because ofher love of sailing, but those of us who had the pleasure and distinct privilege of knowing her will think of her as "mahhvelous, just mahhvelous."

Windward Leg - Spring 2000 MASTERS Report by Gail Turluck, USSCA Masters Chairman Last summer at the USSCA North It has been determined that the US American Championship there was Masters is an USSCA event and that the enthusiasm for experimenting with International Masters is an ISCA event. However, as good things do come in small packages, the Hudson River is arguably among the best known rivers in the world. Its place in American history and its breathtaking beauty are second to none. Inventions such as the steamboat and submarine were first tested here. Its link with the Erie Canal opened up the Midwest to commerce and development. America's first style of painting --The Hudson River School of Art --blossomed here in the 19th Century. And the Hudson Valley is the birthplace of the modern environmental movement. The Hudson River's contribution to America's greatness is unquestionable. However, throughout most of our nation's history, the Hudson has been abused and polluted. Fortunately, though, over the past 30 years as efforts to restore A sunfish on the beach at Kowawese Unique Area at Plum Point, by Jeff Anzevino clean its waters have succeeded, we are "rediscovering" the Hudson River's storm King sunfish Regatta recreational potential. We achieved the support of the Harbormaster of the City of Clearwater and started aggressively advertising a recreational Sunfish fleet to be based out of the Clearwater Community Sailing Center (a city-owned facility).
