The University of Minnesota "M" Student-Athlete Association will hold its first annual holiday food drive at three Golden Gopher men's athletic events, Nov. 29 and 30. Non­ perishable food items and donations will be collected from attending fans and distributed to local shelters to aid needy families during the holiday season.

University of Minnesota sophomore Alex Massura, of Sao Paulo, Brazil, was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week for his efforts at the Big Ten All Stars vs. the USA National Team meet last weekend in Evanston, Ill.

During the meet, Massura took first in the 100 back, clocking a time of 58.18. Massura also swam the opening leg of the 400 medley relay team that took first place, with a time of 3:51.21. Massura also finished fourth in the 200 back at 2:10.37.

GOLDEN GOPHER BASEBALL TEAM SIGNS THREE TOP RECRUITS

University of Minnesota Head Baseball Coach John Anderson announced today that three top recruits have signed national letters of intent to play baseball for the Golden Gophers beginning in the 2000 season. Minnesota's signees are David Roach, of Clearwater, Fla., Luke Appert, of Park-Cottage Grove H.S. and Ben Hendrickson, of Bloomington . Jefferson H.S.

Roach, a 6-1, 180 pound left-handed first baseman was named to the Pinellas County all­ conference team after hitting .418 with four home runs, 12 doubles and 31 runs scored in 27 games. He was also named to the St. Petersburg Times and Tampa Tribune all­ conference teams as a junior. Roach considered Duke, Tulane and Florida before committing to the University of Minnesota. He is the son of Donald and Sally Roach .

. "David fills a need we will have for a left-handed first baseman with the graduations of Robb Quinlan and Aron Amundson after this season," Anderson said. "We are thrilled to have a player of David's academic and athletic ability commit to Minnesota."

Appert is a 6-0, 175 pound middle infielder at Park-Cottage Grove High School. Appert, a two-time St. Paul Suburban all-conference pick, was a Star Tribune all-metro selection last season after batting .452 with two home runs, eight doubles and 28 RBis in 23 games. He is the son of John and Julie Appert.

"Luke is a multi-talented player that can contribute with his bat, his glove and his speed," Anderson said. "He has a team player attitude and will fill a void that will be created with the graduation of second baseman Matt Brosseau."

Ben Hendrickson is a 6-4, 180 pound right-handed pitcher attending Bloomington Jefferson High School. Hendrickson was named to the Lake Conference all-conference squad after leading his team in wins, strikeouts and innings pitched. In addition to being selected MVP of his Jefferson High School team, he was also voted most valuable player this past summer on his Bloomington Blue Legion team. He is the son of Elayne Larson and Graham Hendrickson.

The University of Minnesota wrestling program announced that Damion Hahn signed a national letter of intent to attend the University of Minnesota. - Hahn, a native of Lakewood, N.J., is the No.1 high school wrestler in the nation at any weight class according to Amateur Wrestling News, Wrestling Institute Newsmagazine, USA Wrestling and the National Wrestling Coaches Association. A standout at Lakewood High School, Hahn has won two New Jersey state titles at 189 pounds. He is also a two­ time Junior National Freestyle Champion and a four-time Junior Olympic champion at 178 pounds. In three years, Hahn has racked up a 94-2 overall record and has won 64 consecutive matches at Lakewood.

"Landing Damion Hahn is another big step in bringing our program to the top," Minnesota Head Assistant Coach Marty Morgan said. "He had it narrowed down to Oklahoma State and us and usually at that point we lose them, but it was different this time. The University of Minnesota Men's Swimming and Diving team announced that eight swimmers have signed national letters of intent to attend the University of Minnesota. The recruits include: Allen Ong, a £print free and fly specialist from Mission Viejo, Calif., Aaron Wood, a fly, back and individual medley specialist from Woodbury, Minn., Todd Smolinski, a back, freestyle and IM specialist from St. John, Ind., Jeff Hackler, a breastroke specialist from Alpharetta, Ga., Nick Toumanoff, a distance freestyle specialist from Pewaukee, Wis., Michael Mahoney, a sprint back and freestyle specialist from Edina, Minn., Matt Taylor, a freestyle, fly and IM specialist from Shorewood, Minn., and Mark Atwood, a sprint freestyle specialist from Alexandria, Minn.

Ong, who swims for Mission Viejo High School and the Mission Viejo Nadadores Swim Team, was a U.S. National Qualifier in both the 100 freestyle and butterfly. He was the 1998 California High School CIF State Champion in the 50 free and 100 fly. Ong is also a member of the Malaysian National Swim Team.

Wood, who currently swims with Woodbury High School, was the 1998 Minnesota State High School Champion in the 200 IM. Wood is a two-time high school All-America selection and was named Woodbury High School's Most Valuable Swimmer three times.

Smolinski, of Lake Central High School, is the Indiana state record holder in the 100 yard backstroke at 0:49.61. He is a four-time high school All-America selection and a U.S. National Qualifier in both the 100 and 200 back. Smolinski was the Indiana state high school runner-up in the 100 back.

Hackler, who swims for Centennial High School, was a U.S. National Qualifier in both the 100 and 200 breast with times of 1:05.41 and 2:21.47 respectively. He placed third in the 100 breast and fourth in the 200 breast at the U.S. Junior Championships in Auburn, Alabama.

Toumanoff placed third in the 500 free and fifth in the 200 free at the 1998 Wisconsin State High School Swimming Championships for Arrowhead High School. He also placed fifth in the 500 free, sixth in the 1650 free and seventh in the 1000 free at the 1998 U.S. Junior Championships in East Meadow, N.Y. Mahoney is the 1998 Minnesota State High School Champion in the 100 back for Edina High School with a time of 50.85 seconds. He is also a high school All-America selection.

Taylor, a high school All-America selection at Minnetonka High School, was the state high school champion in the 200 free and 500 free with times of 1:42.16 and 4:37.44 respectively.

CARTER NAMED GOLDEN GOPHER FOOTBALL TEAM MVP

University of Minnesota junior strong safety Tyrone Carter was honored as the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Award (team MVP) at the annual Golden Gopher football banquet Monday at the Minneapolis Athletic Club.

Carter, who is already the all-time school record holder with 298 career solo tackles with one season of eligibility remaining, ranked first on the team and second in the Big Ten with 158 total tackles this past season. That total ranks second on the all-time school records list. Along the way, he broke his own school record of 116 solo tackles set last season with 127 solo stops in 1998. He will head into his senior season ranked third on the all-time school list with 384 total tackles.

A native of Pompano Beach, Fla., Carter also paced the team this past season in tackles for loss (15), sacks (8), recoveries (3) and forced (2). His eight sacks ranks second on the single-season school list behind Lamanzer Williams, who had 18.5 sacks in 1997 en route to earning All-America honors.

A semifinalist for the Football News Defensive Player of the Year Award and the which honors the nation's top collegiate defensive back, Carter ranked second in the Big Ten and set a new single-season school record with an average of 26.7 yards per kickoff return this season. The All-America candidate ran the opening kick back 86 yards for a touchdown in the season opener vs. Arkansas State. The consummate team player, he was also a member of the team's kick coverage unit as well.

MARVIN LEAVES U OF M HOCKEY TEAM

The University of Minnesota announced Monday that junior goaltender Willy Marvin has decided to leave the Golden Gopher men's hockey team.

Marvin, a native of Warroad, Minn., played in four games this season, posting a 1-1-1 record with a 3.62 goals-against average and .870 saves percentage. In his career, Marvin played in 11 games with a 1-1-1 record, 3.68 goals-against average, and .861 saves percentage.

"I just felt it was time to move on with my life and concentrate on things other than hockey," said Marvin. "I wasn't playing as much as I would have liked, and I wish I could have contributed to this team more on the ice. My experience at the University of Minnesota and with the hockey program has been positive, but I feel the need to pursue other avenues and concentrate on school at this time."

MINNESOTA MEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAM FINISHES 24TH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIPS

The University of Minnesota men's cross country team finished 24th at the NCAA Championships held Monday at the University of Kansas in Lawrence, Kan. The Golden Gophers were led by junior Eric Pierce, of Forest Lake, Minn., who finished 59th.

Arkansas captured the team title with 97 points, just ahead of Stanford, who claimed runner-up honors with 114 points. Michigan was the highest Big Ten team at fourth, followed by Wisconsin (sixth) and Michigan State (12th).

Pierce ran a 31:47 to finish 59th in point scoring and 73rd overall. Junior Jeremy Polson, from Duluth, Minn., was the second-highest runner for the Golden Gophers, placing 95th in scoring and 121st overall.

Colorado's Adam Goucher captured the individual title with a time of 29:26.90.

TRAVELING TROPHIES TO BE INTRODUCED TO HOCKEY RIVALRIES

The University of Minnesota men's hockey program will introduce two traveling trophies into its long and storied rivalries with Michigan and Michigan State beginning with this weekend's College Hockey Showcase at Mariucci Arena. The Golden Gophers will play the Wolverines on Friday night at 7:05p.m., followed by a clash with the Spartans on Sunday afternoon at 2:05 p.m.

The trophies, which are created by Twin Cities based Award Craft, will be named after legendary coaches in each school's history. The Minnesota/Michigan trophy, named the Mariucci/Renfrew trophy, will be presented to the winner of the game on Friday night. The Minnesota/Michigan State trophy, called the Mariucci/Besone trophy, will be presented to the winner of the game on Sunday afternoon. The victorious team during the regular season game between the two schools will receive the trophy for the following year.

The Mariucci/Renfrew trophy is named after former Golden Gopher head coach John Mariucci and Wolverine head coach Al Renfrew. The Mariucci/Besone trophy is named after Mariucci and former Spartan head coach Amo Bessone. Both trophies will feature pictures of the coaches and logos from both schools. MEN'S GOLF TEAM INKS TOP RECRUIT

The University of Minnesota men's golf team has announced the signing of a recruit to a national letter of intent during the early signing period which ended last Wednesday.

David Morgan, originally from Rochester, Minn., has signed to play with the Golden Gophers beginning with the 1999-2000 season. Morgan, who lived in Rochester and attended Mayo High School through his freshman prep season, has played the last three seasons at Robert Louis Stevenson Prep School in Monterey, California.

Morgan has placed second in the NorCal State Tournament as both a sophomore and a junior after being named the the all-conference and all-state teams as a freshman in Minnesota. During summer competition, Morgan has been named to the AJGA Rolex Junior All-American honorable mention team, competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur, and the Rolex Tournament of Champions. McLEOD AND CROASTON NAMED BIG TEN SWIMMER AND DIVER OF THE WEEK

University of Minnesota senior Jono McLeod, of Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada, was named Big Ten Swimmer of the Week and sophomore diver Dan Croaston, of Champlin, Minn., was named Big Ten Diver of the Week for their efforts at the Minnesota Invitational meet last weekend at the Aquatic Center.

McLeod provisionally qualified for the NCAA Championships in two events at the Minnesota Invitational, where the Golden Gophers took first place out of six teams scoring 1,098.5 points. McLeod won the 200 IM with a time of 1 :50.36 and the 400 IM medley in 3:55.45. McLeod also finished second in the 200 fly, clocking a time of 1:50.35.

The No. 2 ranked Golden Gopher wrestling team kicks off their 1998-99 campaign with a home dual meet vs. No.1 ranked Oklahoma State, Sunday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m. in Williams Arena.

The Golden Gophers are coming off their best season ever after a school record second place finish at the 1998 NCAA Championships. 1998 NCAA Champion senior Tim Hartung and runner-up senior Chad Kraft will return to lead Minnesota this season. Oklahoma State finished third last year at the NCAA Championships and return two NCAA Champions from last year in Eric Guerrero and Teague Moore.

Minnesota Men's Athletics Marketing Department kicks off the night with the "Ugliest Cowboy Hat" contest. Fans in attendance who wear their ugliest cowboy hats will be selected out of the crowd at halftime of the match. Goldy Gopher will then pick the ugliest cowboy hat of the group and award that lucky fan $150.

"Fly for Peanuts" is another contest the marketing department is sponsoring. Those fans with turkeys printed on the Sun Country ad of the program will get an opportunity to toss a bag of peanuts in to a box. The fan who can accomplish this will receive two travel vouchers from Sun Country Airlines.

University of Minnesota junior strong safety Tyrone Carter, who collected first-team All-America honors from the Football News last week, was named a first-team All-Big Ten selection ~y both the media and the league's coaches Monday.

Carter, who is already the all-time school record holder with 298 career solo tackles with one season of eligibility remaining, ranked first on the team and second in the Big Ten with 158 total tackles this past season. That total ranks second on the all-time school records list. Along the way, he broke his own school record of 116 solo tackles set last season with 127 solo stops in 1998. He will head into his senior season ranked third on the all-time school list with 384 total tackles.

A native of Pompano Beach, Fla., Carter also paced the team this past season in tackles for loss (15), sacks (8), fumble recoveries (3) and forced fumbles (2). His eight sacks ranks second on the single-season school list behind Lamanzer Williams, who had 18.5 sacks in 1997 en route to earning All-America honors. It marks the first time in school history since 1962 (Bobby Bell) and 1963 (Carl Eller) that Minnesota has had first-team All-America selections in back-to-back seasons.

A semifinalist for the Football News Defensive Player of the Year Award ·and the Jim Thorpe A ward which honors the nation's top collegiate defensive back, Carter ranked second in the Big Ten and set a new single-season school record with an average of 26.7 yards per kickoff return this season. He ran the opening kick back 86 yards for a touchdown in the season opener vs. Arkansas State. The consummate team player, he was also a member of the team's kick coverage unit as well.

Junior running back Thomas Hamner, who had a team-leading 838 yards rushing this past season and is now ranked fourth on the all-time school list with 2,384 career yards on the ground, earned second-team All-Big Ten honors from both the media and the coaches.

Sophomore center Ben Hamilton and senior defensive tackle Antoine Richard were named honorable mention All-Big Ten by both the coaches and the media. Senior placekicker Adam Bailey and junior wide receiver Luke Leverson were named honorable mention by the coaches, while senior free safety Keith Dimmy and senior linebacker Pare Williams received honorable mention honors by the media.

For Immediate Release December 10, 1998 HARTUNG NAMED CAPTAIN OF ALL-AMERICAN FARM TEAM

Senior wrestler Tim Hartung, of Durand, Wis., was named the captain of the wrestling All­ American Farm Team. The All-American Farm Team is a scholastic program sponsored by Dodge Truck and Successful Farming magazine honoring outstanding collegiate athletes who call a farm or ranch home. A $1,000 scholarship will be donated to the University of Minnesota in Hartung's name.

Hartung, a two-time Big Ten Champion and the 1998 NCAA Champion at 190 pounds, is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation at 197 pounds. He currently has a 3.2 grade point average while majoring in sports administration. Hartung has also earned two Academic All-Big Ten awards.

Other members of the wrestling All-American Farm Team include: Jeff Freidhof of Luther College, Wes Hand of Iowa and Chad Wickman of South Dakota. THREE ATHLETES COMMIT TO THE UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA

Three athletes have signed a letter of intent during the early signing period to compete at the University of Minnesota in cross country and track and field. The trio includes Minnesota natives Neil Hanson and Adam Steele and Canadian Willie McComb.

Hanson (Granada, Minn.) is the 1998 Class AA Minnesota State Champion in cross country with a state record time of 15:33 and was also the Class AA runner-up in the mile last spring with a time of 4:16.8.

Steele (Eden Prairie, Minn.) was the Class AA state champion in the 400-meter run last spring and was a member of the Eden Prairie state runner-up team for cross country this fall.

University of Minnesota true freshman wide receiver has been named to The Sporting News Freshman All-America second-team, while junior strong safety Tyrone Carter was a third-team All-America choice by the publication.

Johnson, who had a career-high nine receptions for 100 yards at Wisconsin on Nov. 7, set freshman single-season school records with 38 receptions and four receiving this season. The previous records of 24 receptions and three touchdown receptions were set by Ryan Thelwell in 1994. With 395 receiving yards, Johnson narrowly missed Thelwell's freshman record of 406 receiving yards. He is the son of Ron Johnson Sr., who earned two rings (1978 and 1979) as a cornerback for the NFL's .
