More transparency is needed for taxes Taxes are a necessity because government is a necessity. In today’s toxic political environment, there are some who refuse to concede either point, but they are clear nonetheless. But it also is clear that the power to tax can be used too easily, at times. The inner workings of government are not de- signed to be a spectator sport, and, as such, many Americans simply don’t pay much attention. A: The Dionne quintuplets, Annette, Cecile, Emilie, Marie and Yvonne, were born in Ontario, Canada, on May 28, 1934. They were the first newborn quintuplets to survive. News of their birth spread worldwide. They were made wards of the province of Ontario, Canada, in 1935 and Dave Green moved to a specially built nursery compound, Conceptis Sudoku • By Dave Green known as Quintland, where millions of tourists came to watch the girls through one-way glass. 8 9 Many dolls were made representing the girls as infants and toddlers. Q: My mother bought a Smith-Miller toy truck at an antiques shop in the late 1960s or Cryptoquip early ‘70s. It says “Marshall Field & Co.” on the side. I’ve seen similar ones online, but the prices are all over the place. Can you give me a good idea of the value? A: Smith-Miller was founded by Bob Smith Mother Goose and Grimm Mike Peters and Matt Miller in Los Angeles in 1944. Smith • left the company in 1948. Miller sold the com- pany in 1952. The company made 1/16 scale toy trucks. It was unable to compete with cheaper toys in the mid-1950s, so production was shut down in 1954. The company continued to sell old stock and parts. Fred Thompson, who had been restoring Smith-Miller trucks, bought the com- pany, stock, dies and the building in 1979. The company now makes new trucks in numbered limited editions. Sylvia strikes again It was impossible to predict what Sylvia would do at any time, since her conception of the game was completely different than anyone else’s. The bids and plays she would concoct on the spur of the moment – while to her appearing en- tirely logical – were a never-ending source of as- tonishment not only to her harried partners but also to her (usually) grateful opponents. Despite this, Sylvia was a popular member of Zits • Jim Borgman & Jerry Scott the club, frequently providing the members with something to talk about whenever one of her zany bids or plays worked out in her favor. Take this deal from Sylvia’s very first team-of- four match. She was East and doubled six spades, which South – well aware of Sylvia’s proclivities – redoubled. West led the ace of diamonds, and Sylvia trumped it with the jack! This extraordinary play naturally drew a gasp from the large gallery of kibitzers, but thereafter the play proceeded nor- mally, and South went down one. At the other table, South also got to six spades (undoubled) but made the slam. Here, too, the ace of diamonds was led, but East discarded a club on it. Declarer ruffed and led a spade, West showing out. South’s only chance now was a trump endplay, which he proceeded to execute. He took the spade ace, led a heart to the king and cashed four clubs, discarding dummy’s four remaining diamonds. Next he played three more rounds of hearts end- ing in dummy, at which point dummy’s last three cards were the K-10-8 of spades. The eight-of- spades lead then left East without recourse. Sylvia’s team thus gained 1,180 points on the deal as the result of her trumping her partner’s ace! © 2021 King Features Syndicate Inc.
