Needs Updating 07 Confawardrelease.Indd 22007007 MMEN’SEN’S SSOCCEROCCER FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE November 12, 2007 2007 All-ACC Men’s Soccer Teams Announced GREENSBORO, N.C. – Wake Forest led all schools with five honorees on this year’s All-Conference teams as announced Monday. The No. 1 ranked Demon Deacons, which have topped the Soccer America Top 25 poll eight of the 11 weeks this season, picked up four first-team ACC selections. All ACC men’s soccer programs were represented on this year’s All-ACC first-, second- and All-Freshman teams. In addition to Wake Forest placing multiple student-athletes to the all-league teams, Boston College, which captured the ACC regular season title and earned the top seed at the upcoming ACC Men’s Soccer Tournament, had four first- and second-team picks. Boston College, which earned two individual titles, and Duke earned two first-team selections apiece. Head coach Ed Kelly, who led the Eagles to a 7-1-0 ACC mark en route to collecting the league’s regular season crown, was named the 2007 ACC Coach of the Year. In addition, Eagles’ midfielder Alejandro Bedoya was tabbed the Offensive Player of the Year. The junior posted 74 shots, seven goals, including four game- winners for the Eagles, in 17 games on the 2007 season. Maryland defender Omar Gonzalez was named the 2007 ACC Defensive Player of the Year as the sophomore from Dallas, Texas, has led the Terrapins to a 10-match unbeaten streak to conclude the regular season. The Terps are 7-0-3 during that stretch with four straight wins, three of them in ACC action. Rookie midfielder Corben Bone captured Freshman of the Year honors for the Demon Deacons. Bone ranks fourth in the ACC in assists per game (0.50). Duke leads all ACC schools in all-time All-Freshman honors as the Blue Devils have recorded ten All-Freshman selections. Duke, in addition to Boston College and Wake Forest, added two rookies to this year’s list. Referred to: 1 A JOINT RESOLUTION HONORING THE MEN'S SOCCER TEAM AT WAKE 2 FOREST UNIVERSITY ON WINNING A NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP. 3 Whereas, on December 16, 2007, the men's soccer team at Wake Forest 4 University won the National Collegiate Athletic Association's (NCAA) College Cup 5 Title, defeating Ohio State by a score of 2-1; and 6 Whereas, this achievement gave Wake Forest University its first NCAA 7 men's soccer national championship title; and 8 Whereas, the men's soccer team finished its 2007 Atlantic Coast Conference 9 (ACC) season with a record of 6-1-1 and an overall record of 22-2-2, the best in school 10 history; and 11 Whereas, many individual team members were recognized for their efforts 12 during the year including, Marcus Tracy, who was named the NCAA tournament's Most 13 Valuable Offensive Player, and Brian Edwards, who was named the NCAA 14 tournament's Most Valuable Defensive Player; and 15 Whereas, Cody Amoux, Pat Phelan, and Sam Cronin were named 16 All-Americans by the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA); and 17 Whereas, Corben Bone was named the ACC's Freshman of the Year and 18 selected to the First Team All-Freshman squad by Soccer America along with 19 teammate, Ike Opara; and 20 Whereas, Pat Phelan and Julian Valentin were selected to play for the U.S.
