What To Look For When Purchasing Flutes:
Difference Between a C-foot and a B-foot Flute C-Foot B-Foot Most student flutes have a C-foot, while most intermediate and professional flutes have a B-foot. A B-foot is a longer foot with an extra key that allows the flute to play down to a low-B. While the low-B isn’t used often, it has become the standard on intermediate and professional flutes.
Offset and Inline G Key Placement Inline Offset Student flutes are usually an offset-G, which means the “G” key is “offset” from the rest of the keys on the flute, making it easily accessible to those with small hands. Flutes with an inline-G are identical except the “G” key is “inline” with the rest of the keys. Virtually all intermediate and professional flutes are available in either configuration, with offset-G now being the more popular choice.
Open Holed Flutes and Closed Holed Flutes Open Closed Open-hole flutes (known as French style) have keys with holes in the center of them. Closed-hole flutes (known as Plateau) have solid keys without holes. Most intermediate and professional flutes are French style, as the open-hole configuration allows for greater tonal flexibility for an advancing player. All open-hole flutes include “key plugs” to mimic the closed hole flute until a player is ready to advance.

What To Look For When Purchasing Clarinets: Plastic (Resin) Clarinet vs. Wood Clarinet
Wood clarinets generally provide a rich, warm, and Plastic (Resin) mellow tone when compared to a resin (plastic) clarinet. Real wood is more expensive to manufacture, requires more maintenance and is not as Wood durable as resin, so most student clarinets are made of resin, and most professional clarinets are wood.

What To Look For When Purchasing Trumpets: Lacquer Trumpet Finish vs. Silver Trumpet Finish Silver horns get their color through a plating process where silver is “plated” to the brass material underneath. Lacquered horns get a spray of clear lacquer over the brass after it has been polished. Technically speaking, the lacquer, being a spray-on liquid, restricts the resonance and reduces the quality of sound; however, the difference is so negligible it goes unnoticed at the student level. Most intermediate and professional models are silver plated, and some professional models remain unfinished altogether! Hand-Lapped vs. Machined Valves The most critical aspect of a good trumpet are smooth and fast valves. Student instruments are machined to specifications to provide a consistent and durable action in a cost-effective manner for mass produced models.
