CURRENT BLACKJACK NEWS May 2018 Published Monthly Since 1979 CURRENT BLACKJACK NEWS May 2018 Published monthly since 1979. ISSN 1081-2636 Price per year: $109 (on BJ21.com or by email). Single issue $17. Published by BJ21.com -- email: [email protected] Las Vegas El Cortez downgraded one single deck and one double deck to six-deck continuous shufflers. Ellis Island removed its continuous-shuffling machines. Four Queens replaced its single-deck game with a carnival game, but increased the table limit at its one table of double deck, which is the only remaining blackjack game. Monte Carlo is to be rebranded as Park MGM and NoMad hotels. Red Rock removed its double-deck game at which the dealer stood on soft 17. Reno area Eldorado is in process of purchasing MontBleu in South Lake Tahoe, Tropicana Casino and Resort in Atlantic City, Tropicana Laughlin Hotel and Casino, Tropicana Evansville in Indiana, Belle of Baton Rouge Casino & Hotel in Louisiana, Trop Casino Greenville in Mississippi and Lumière Place in Missouri. Hard Rock in South Lake Tahoe (Stateline) removed its single-deck and eight-deck games. CA: San Diego, East of Hollywood double-deck penetration worsened. CA: San Diego, North of Valley View eight-deck penetration worsened. NJ: Atlantic City Resorts reduced the table maximum on most of its eight deckers and on Spanish 21. OH: Cincinnati area Double deck has returned to Belterra with two tables. WA: Kennewick-Richland-Pasco Joker's improved six-deck penetration. Canada ON: Sarnia Gateway Point Edward has returned to s17 at all games. ON: Windsor Caesars Windsor is closed due to a strike; all shows and reservations canceled until May 19. 1 Notes for Lists of Casinos A change from last report is denoted by a plus, minus, or asterisk in the left margin. Plus means a change most would consider to be for the better, and minus means a change most would consider to be for the worse. An asterisk means a change that cannot generally be described as for the better or for the worse. The “tables” columns show total tables with the specific rules delineated in the "rules" column, usually adding together tables of different minimums and maximums within that rule set. Some tables might have been closed when the reporter visited. The “edge” columns show the percent advantage the casino has over a basic-strategy player. The “cut” columns show the number of decks yet unseen when the dealer is undecided on whether to shuffle or deal another round. The “min” columns show usual minimum bets; the actual minimums might be lower on weekdays and higher during the busiest hours. The “max” columns show usual maximum bets; the actual maximums might be lower on weekdays and higher during the busiest hours. The “rules” columns show deviations from: BJ pays 3:2; one bet lost to a dealer’s BJ; the dealer does not look at the hole card; you may double down on any two cards but not after splitting; you may split any pair; you may resplit any pair except aces to make up to four hands; split aces receive one card each; insurance; and no surrender. The Key to Rules begins four pages before the final page of this issue. We do not list 6:5 and most other carnival games. "Database participant" means the casino is known or reasonably believed to be an active participant in one or more outside databases of law-abiding but unwelcome skilled patrons, in addition to its internal corporate database. • The Naming of Gaming
The Naming of Gaming Pauliina Raento Academy of Finland and William A. Douglass University of Nevada, Reno The naming of casinos in Las Vegas, Nevada, is an essential ingredient in the design of the city's entertainment landscape. More than 300 names have been used in the naming of gaming in Las Vegas since 1955. They occur in seven dominant patterns: 1) luck and good fortune, 2) wealth and opulence, 3) action, adventure, excitement and fantasy, 4) geography, 5) a certain moment, era, or season, 6) intimacy and informal- ity, and 7) "power words" commonly used in the naming of businesses. The categories are described and analyzed from the perspective of the evolution of Las Vegas. Regional variations between the Las Vegas Strip, Downtown Las Vegas, and suburban Las Vegas are also discussed. The names provide a powerful means of evoking senses of place, images, and identities for the casinos. They underscore the interpretative subjectivity and plurality of the relationship between people and commercial urban environments. Introduction We name people, things, and places to distinguish them from one another and to give them character. Often the names are commemorative and draw upon features (usually positive) of individuals and places. Buildings, streets and towns are named after other familiar places, historical events, and distinguished persons who have played a notable role in the shared past. As an example of the latter, over one quarter of the roughly 3,000 counties in the United States are named patriotically, most often commemorating a political figure (Zelinsky 1983, 6). Names of streets and buildings in capital cities and other centers of importance have special prestige.

  • Deal Salvages Tropicana Tahoe Casino
Deal salvages Tropicana Tahoe casino The Tropicana’s sister resort at Lake Tahoe, facing eviction for subpar performance, has agreed to pay USD 165 million to the landowner for permission to stay put for another three years. The resolution demonstrates how Tropicana Entertainment has been struggling to maintain properties in competitive markets while cutting costs — a controversial strategy that led to the company’s undoing in Atlantic City, where it was ordered by New Jersey gaming regulators to give up its license, and has angered the Culinary Union in Las Vegas, where the property is in the midst of protracted contract negotiations. It also reflects the influence of Tropicana’s new president, Scott Butera, in reaching an amicable settlement with the Lake Tahoe landlord. The landowner sued the casino company in 2005 for allegedly violating the terms of its lease — mainly, by failing to operate a high-end casino. “There was the potential for a judgment significantly greater than what we settled for,” Butera said. “My view is to get as many of the issues and problems that are distracting for the company behind us.” Tropicana Entertainment revealed details of a confidential court settlement in a Securities and Exchange Commission filing last week. The disclosure was required because Tropicana already owes on USD 960 million in loans the company used to purchase Aztar Corp. and its Tropicana-branded casinos in Las Vegas and Atlantic City. Bondholders have sued, seeking immediate payment and threatening to force the company into bankruptcy. The lawsuit centers on the Horizon, the company’s Lake Tahoe casino, which has fallen on hard times.

  • Fiscal and Capacity Requirements
CONSULTANT SERVICES FOR THE GAMING REGULATORY OVERSIGHT AUTHORITY Area 2: Fiscal and Capacity Requirements October 21, 2013 0 Table of Contents 1 Approach By direction of NH RSA 284-A, the New Hampshire Gaming Regulatory Oversight Authority has directed WhiteSand to prepare a report identifying the strengths and weaknesses of the 2013 NH legislative proposals as compared to the best and most relevant components of the regulatory provisions in the other comparator states. This part of the report addresses fiscal and capacity requirements: WhiteSand has approached this particular task using a formal methodology to determine market demand. We reviewed the specific demographics and other attributes of the gaming jurisdiction to be evaluated. This included, but was not limited to, population, income levels, age distribution, nearby competition and gaming tax rates. We evaluated these factors within ranges of 30, 60 and 90 miles of the proposed gaming facility general location. In order to provide a consistent measurement of demographics within a specific region we use distance radii from the region. Using distance rather than driving time eliminates fluctuations due to drive times, day of week, unpredictable events (e.g., accidents, weather, etc.) and other factors. Distance radii are translatable to drive times in most scenarios and provide more consistent results due to the reduction of unpredictability. Using this information, we then identifed a “Competitive Set” for the proposed gaming facility - other gaming properties to be compared based on similar demographics and characteristics. While the properties identified in the competitive set usually do not provide an exact match, they present enough similarities to evaluate market demand and estimate key financial statistics.
