This house was once the the personal residence of Sarah Lockwood Pardee Winchester. The widow of William Wirt Winchester and heiress to a large portion of the Winchester repeating arms. Then tragedy befell Sarah, her infant daughter died of a childhood illness. Then a few years later her husband died of tuberculosis. Shortly after her husband's death she moved out of her home that was in New Haven, CT and moved out west to San Jose in California. There she bought an eight room farmhouse and began what could only be described as the longest renovation ever. The reno only stopped when Sarah died in Sept, 5th 1922. From 1886 to 1922 construction seemingly never ceased as the original eight room house. This house grew into the most unusual and sprawling mansion. This house was 24,000 square feet, 10,000 windows, 2,000 doors, 160 rooms, 52 skylights, 47 stairways and fireplaces, 17 chimneys, 13 bathrooms, 6 kitchens, and built a price tag of $5 million dollars in 1923 or $71 million today. But remained was nothing but a mystery, even before passing, rumors of “mystery house” being built by an eccentric and wealthy woman swirled. Was she instructed to build this home by a physic? Was she haunted by ghosts of those felled by the “gun that won the west?” Did construction ever truly stop? But really all we know was the Sarah was an independent woman. And that she had some courage. But she lives on as a legend. So does the mansion. But when you visit the mansion, their have been several reports of paranormal activity. So all we could be wondering is, who is still there? But there is a theory that sticks out, What if there were ghosts telling Sarah what to do? What if she wasn’t the one who was building all those rooms? What if ghosts had her building rooms of where the ghosts died, by the winchester gun? Was she controlled by ghosts, or was she just a crazy old lady? Some people celebrate religious traditions like Hanukkah or Christmas. Different families have different traditions. In the Philippines there is a Giant Lantern festival. This festival is celebrated on the Saturday before Christmas Eve in the city of San Fernando. They hold a Building the Best Lantern competition. This festival attracts people from all over the world. The lanterns are built with a variety of materials. The lanterns are lit with electric bulbs, they used to be lit with candles. In Sweden there is a 13 metre-tall Yule Goat. People try to burn the goat. The goat has successfully been burned 29 times. In Austria there is a demon-like beast that roams the streets and scares the kids, punishing the bad kids. This beast is St. Nicholas’ evil associate, Krampus. In this tradition St. Nicholas rewards the nice little boys and girls. When St. Nicholas is out rewarding the good kids, Krampus is capturing the naughty kids. In the first week of December young men dress up as Krampus and scare the little kids with their chains and bells. In Norway, people hide their brooms because they believe that evil spirits came out on the night of Christmas Eve and would take the brooms and ride on them. This tradition dates back centuries ago. In Columbia people place little candles that have paper around them to make it look like a rose, people place theses candles in their windows. They do this to celebrate the Virgin Mary. Neighborhoods also compete to see which family or household has the best flower arrangement in their front yards. No matter what type of Christmas tradition your family celebrates, it’s just a way to spend time with your family or friends. Santa Claus from Country to Country Lesson topic: Various ways Santa is portrayed in different countries Content Concepts: -Learn about various Santa Claus legends United States, Belgium, Brazil, Finland, France, Germany, Hungary, New Zealand, Romania, Russia, Netherlands, Spain, Chile. -Social Studies, history, map skills -Reading (list of library books) -Math problems -Science projects -Craft projects -Writing practice -Gaming skills -Music (list of Christmas CD’s) Proficiency levels: Grades 4 - 6 Information, Materials, Resources: Social Studies, History, and Map skills United States: The modern portrayal of Santa Claus frequently depicts him listening to the Christmas wishes of young children. Santa Claus (also known as Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Kris Kringle, Santy or simply Santa) is a folklore figure in various cultures who distributes gifts to children, normally on Christmas Eve . Each name is a variation of Saint Nicholas , but refers to Santa Claus. In today's North American, European and worldwide celebration of Christmas, people young and old simply refer to the hero of the season as Santa , or Santa Claus. (Wikipedia) Conventionally, Santa Claus is portrayed as a kindly, round-bellied, merry, bespectacled white man in a red coat trimmed with white fur, with a long white beard . On Christmas Eve, he rides in his sleigh pulled by flying reindeer from house to house to give presents to children. To enter the house, Santa Claus comes down the chimney and exits through the fireplace . During the rest of the year he lives together with his wife Mrs. Claus and his elves manufacturing toys . Some modern depictions of Santa (often in advertising and popular entertainment) will show the elves and Santa's workshop as more of a processing and distribution facility, ordering and receiving the toys from various toy manufacturers from across the world.

These events center around the figure of the Krampus, a beast-like, punishing “devil” that accompanies St. Nicholas on December 5, the eve of his feast day. By 2010, groups of people in US cities were staging their own Krampusnacht processions in downtown areas, referencing the European enactments while simultaneously innovating their embodiments to meaningfully interact with the Christmas season in the United States. Participation in these events increases annually and the Krampus figure’s presence online and in popular media is on the rise.
