Somewhere in the badlands national Park, SD, USA
Y. Copard – RESOBAM WS, Rouen – Nov. 2014 RESOBAM: main topic
Implementation of a survey badlands network around Mediterranean Sea
Group a serie of more and less monitored badlands catchments Draix, Araguás, Vallcebre, El Cautivo : gauging stations (5 < t < 30 yrs of water and sediment records)
Tevere, Ombrone (Tuscany), Craco (Basilicata) : erosion pins, punctual measurements – project to instrumente a catchment in Tuscany
Y. Copard – RESOBAM WS, Rouen – Nov. 2014 Badlands –thematics and key words for a future project Badlands as a sensitive area to Global Change – Observed changes in: A- Sediment and water concerns : river management (reservoirs filling, sedimentary & ecological continuity), erosion, sediment transfer & budget, water resources & budgets, social & economic impacts, sedimentary archives, etc.
B- Nutrients concerns : biogeochemical cycles, aquatic (& marine) ecosystems, water resources (quality), weathering, contaminants (metals, organic), human health, ecosystems sustainability, agriculture, social & economic impacts, etc.
C- Soils & landscapes conservation : ecosystem service, abandonment farmlands, social and economic impacts, preservation of cultural heritages
D- Biodiversity : soil and aquatic environments
E- Education concerns : for all thematic listed in A, B, C, and D.
Y. Copard – RESOBAM WS, Rouen – Nov. 2014 example: A- sediment and water transports
Social and economic activities vs badlands
Decrease in reservoirs capacity Increase in desertification Damage on water quality Damage in urban network (mudslides) Damage on aquatic ecosystem
impact of sediment fluxes from badlands in the dam filling (e.g. Yesa, Serre-Ponçon, Llobregat reservoirs, connection with Sea? ) - impact of water quality and resources? - what happens once the sedimentary and ecological continuities are achieved? - howt to protect / preserve these sensitive surfaces?
