Update No.193 - Our Women Shine!

The weather was slightly kinder last Saturday – at least the rain held off. The day started with high humidity but, by mid afternoon, a cold wind made conditions quite unpleasant. At least there was play and our Men’s teams largely faltered. But not our two Women’s teams – to Howick Pakuranga’s cost – read on:

Club Cricket – Saturday 7 November

Women’s Premier Grade - Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga

Prichard Cup – Limited (40/40) Over Championship at Lloyd Elsmore Park HOWICK PAKURANGA 100/10 (31) A Parr 28, Maddy Curran 3/10 (6), Renee Macmillan 2/17 (6) Sam Brake-Howard 1/22 (2), Lune Strydom 2/9 (3) PARNELL 101/9 (47) Steph Carr 27 (62), Katrina Browne 21*(78), Gemma Lord 11(18) R Allright 3/16 (10), A Parr 2/10 (10), M Downes 2/22 (9) FOW 11/1, 13/2, 14/3, 28/4, 30/5, 40/6, 60/7, 74/8, 99/9 RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 1

What a brilliant game! Congratulations to our Parnell team – some excellent bowling to restrict Howick Pak by skittling them for just 100. Then, in reply, and after losing steadily – 14/3, 30/5, 60/7. It must have looked all over – Steph, who had held all together, had just been dismissed. But Kat held on – first with Sam then with Gemma. Dogged grit – 14 added with Sam, then a totally crucial partnership of 25 with Gemma. They ground it out, only 1 four each (only 3 hit in the entire innings) – until, at 99, Gemma was dismissed. Two still needed – enter Renee at no. 11 and a breathless hush! Renee faced 4 balls and then a 2 and the win was ours!

The heroine was Kat – 21 off 78 balls – fantastic! – No need for crashing 4s and 6s to make a game!!!!! Here, Kat is relaxing back at the Club later in the evening, Women’s Prem. Reserves - Parnell vs Howick Pakuranga

T20 Championship at Melville Park 3. HOWICK PAKURANGA 81/7 (20) Petra Beuvink 2 wickets PARNELL 84/0 ( 8.1) Amity Drake 20*, Olivia Anderson 44* (25) RESULT: PARNELL WON BY 10 WICKETS

Thanks Huss for reporting (and umpiring, too): A fabulous win for the Team – a resounding win in fact! First there was great work in the field to restrict Howick Pak to only 81. Then our opening pair utterly dominated the HP attack – from the very first ball which Amity hit for 6. After that Olivia took over and the winning runs came up at a rate of better than 10 an over. May this form

continue! Older members please note: Olivia Anderson is the daughter of Dave Anderson, our Premier opening bowler some seasons back – 1990s in fact. Olivia’s younger sister, Emma, also played in this game as our numbers were short and her brother, Ewen played for our Thirds. Wonderful to have the Andersons aboard!

Amity Drake, our opener who hit the first ball for 6 and together with Olivia Anderson took us to a 10 wicket win Amity, here with the gloves the previous week vs Mangere

Olivia Anderson who opened the with Amity – here bowling the previous week vs Mangere Men’s Premier Grade – Parnell vs North Shore at Devonport

Hedley Howarth Trophy – Major Two Day Championship NORTH SHORE 292/9 (62) S Keene 39, R Mudford 58, T Chitongo 85*, Ganesh Ratnasabapathy 2/72 (16), Josh Fisher 1/16 (6), Henry King 2/75 (11), Dean van Deventer 2/72 (16), Fanie de Villiers 1/47 (9), Giacomo Lamplough 1/7 (4) PARNELL 87/4 (39) Ben Rae 26, Flynn McGregor-Sumpter 36, T Duncraft 2/29 (11) FOW 29/1, 45/2, 74/3, 85/4

RESULT: DRAW – North Shore and Parnell both taking 8 points

DAY 2. The excellent start on Day 1. - 1/1, 5/2, 48/3, 55/4 was not so rosie when rain ended play with North Shore 118 without further loss. And the bad news continued of Day 2. Our attack could make next to no headway on a pitch that gave little help and North Shore took their total to 292 at which point they had to compulsorily declare.

In response we started briskly with Ben Rae’s 26 coming off only 30 balls with our total 29. The chase really ended then as Ben was caught behind off Duncraft. Will Ormiston, making his Premier debut, joined Flynn but Dunraft took his 2nd wicket when he had Will caught for 7 with the total 45. Two down and survival was the order. Flynn with Aniket battled on but the latter, after facing 45 balls and taking the score to 74, was lbw to Hira for 6. Enter Brad Rodden who almost got us to stumps but Chitongo had him lbw for 2 just before the close. Harry had time to score 2 before he and Flynn, who had seen out 105 balls for his 36* came in undefeated.

Note that on Day 2. Will Ormiston and Giacomo Lamplough replaced Andy Lane and Josh Fisher, both unavailable,

THE NEXT TWO SATURDAYS, 14 & 21 NOVEMBER, PREMS WILL BE HOME TO AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY. HOPEFULLY, OUR BOWLERS WILL GET MORE OUT OF THE SHORE ROAD PITCH (OR FIND A LENGTH MORE SUITABLE TO GRASS AFTER HOURS OF PREPARATION ON ARTIFICIAL)

Henry King – welcome back to Parnell Will Ormiston on Premier debut

Giacomo, 1/7 off 4 overs, had our best figures – batsman is T Chitongo the Zimbabwean allrounder who hit 85*

Flynn, who opened and saw us through to a draw, undefeated on 36 Men’s Premier Reserves – Parnell vs Cornwall at Shore Road.

President’s Cup – Two Day Major Championship PARNELL 87/10 (43) Giacomo Lamplough 21, B Russell 4/14 CORNWALL 210/10 (64) D Gallage 53, S Crooks 69, L Wheeler 40, Simon Walker 1/40, Sam Jenkin 2/50, Vatsai Desai 3/41, Henry Dawson 1/25, Josh Milne 1/21, K Trivedi 2/24 RESULT: CORNWALL WON ON 1st INNINGS – Cornwall 14 points Parnell 3

Obviously not the best day at the office. Our batsmen failed on Day 1. & our bowlers toiled to little avail on Day 2.

Men’s Third Grade – Parnell vs Papatoetoe, Orakei Domain

Two Day Championship PARNELL 202/8 (45) Parv Mehta 67, Luke O’Toole 28. PAPATOETOE 109/2 (22) Ewen Anderson 2/14 (4) st RESULT: PAPATOETOE WON ON 1 INNINGS (D/L) – Papatoetoe 6.09 points Parnell 2.52

Men’s Sixth Grade – Parnell vs Waitakere, Te Atatu Park Two Day Championship PARNELL 208/8 (45) Rudi Bisschoff 111 (116), Jack Dohnt 26, Nandan Gajjar 21* WAITAKERE 65/4 (23) Anjana Premashantha 3/16, Nandan Gajjar 1/25 st RESULT: PARNELL WON ON 1 INNINGS (D/L) – Parnell 6.08 points Waitakere 2.9

Congratulations to Rudi Bisschoff who hit Parnell’s first Club 100 of the 2020/21 Season Rudi’s 111 was scored off 116 balls and included 10 fours – Photo above was taken 2 seasons ago – Rudi is much younger now! Other Selections & Results

Personal recommendations from:

PHIL HORNE: “Simon Kelly provided outstanding care for our Premier Men’s squad in 2018/19, and this season Simon has also worked with our Premier Women’s squad. I can personally recommend Simon’s expertise and his involvement played a very significant role in ensuring our players were in improved shape through the season.”

BRAD RODDEN PCC Premier Captain concurs –“Simon and Mt Eden Chiropractic were a fantastic addition to Parnell Cricket Club last season and we very much appreciate their working with us again this summer. Simon and his team have given their time selflessly to us and provided an excellent service that gives our players every opportunity to stay fit and on the field all season. Simon gets a glowing review from every one of the players that goes in to see his team and his involvement again this season gives us an edge not many teams would be lucky enough to get. On behalf of PCC, thank you very much Simon. Brad” hil also adds that Simon hopes to play some matches for our Presidents team and his young son Riley, who plays for the Club
