She played on the University of Minnesota women’s golf team (1974-76), won the women’s Big Ten title in 1974 and the Minnesota Invitational in 1974 and 1975. After spending four years on the Women’s Professional Golf Tour and qualifying for the 1978 U.S. Open, she became a golf teacher and is among the top instructors in Minnesota. She earned four letters as a skier at Ironwood Luther L. Wright High School and won the U.P. slalom in 1972. She helped lead the fight for the University of Minnesota to establish the Patty Berg Scholarship for female athletes and the school later established a women’s athletic department. HERB GRENKE (Marquette)-The native of Oconto Falls, Wis. was defensive line coach for Northern Michigan University’s NCAA Division 2 championship football team in 1975. Grenke was NMU’s head coach from 1983-90 and compiled a school- best 53-28-1 record. He coached in all 12 of NMU’s NCAA playoff games. In 1987, Grenke was GLIAC coach of the year and Region 3 Kodak College Football Coach of the Year. After serving in the Marine Corps with the elite 1st Marine Brigade amphibious recon platoon, Grenke played football at Univer- sity of Wisconsin-Milwaukee and was a two-time all-confer- ence selection and two-time team captain. He also coached at UW-Platteville and Northern Illinois. JACK INGALLS (Gladstone)-An all-around athlete while growing up in East Jordan, Jack Ingalls spent 14 seasons as Gladstone High School’s boys basketball coach and seven years at Vestaburg, compiling a 263-159 record. He was U.P. Class A-B coach of the year four times and directed Gladstone to two Class B quarterfinals. He was also interim girls head basketball coach at Gladstone in 1997. Ingalls also coached track, football and Little League baseball, and has served as a volunteer coach for the five-time state champion St. Ignace LaSalle High School girls basketball teams. He helped the Pe- toskey Eagles win the Class C state fastpitch softball champi- onshhip and Bremeyer-Bain win a Class D state title and was a 14-year fastpitch standout hitter-outfielder. 4 JIM KARABETSOS (Marquette)-After earning 11 varsity letters in four sports at Marquette Graveraet High School, Jim Karabet- sos earned a basketball scholarship to Northern Michigan Univer- sity and was a four-year letterman. He helped NMU finish third in the NAIA tournament with an overall school-best 24-3 record in 1960-61. He was the team’s captain in 1961-62. He then became head basketball coach at Ashland, Wis. High School, then was an assistant at Mankato (Minn.) State and Kansas University. After one season as an assistant at Denver University, he spent two sea- sons as Denver’s head coach and was head coach at Regis College in Denver from 1973-77. He was also assistant athletic director at University of North Dakota from 1982-86 and his final 13 years were spent as professor of sport management at Western Illinois University. RICH MCCARTHY (Kingsford)-Despite serious health issues (four kidney transplants and one liver transplant), Rich McCa- rthy was a successful athlete and high school coach for 32 years before he died in 2003. He earned 11 letters in four sports at Kingsford High School, was a three-year starting quarterback at Northern Michigan University, where he owned 10 school re- cords and was MVP of the 1969 team. He was head football coach at Muskegon Oakridge High School for five years and was an as- sistant football coach at Muskegon Orchard View and Muskegon Reeths-Puffer for 21 years. He was also girls track coach for 12 years at Reeths-Puffer. He was Michigan’s assistant football coach of the year in 1997 and was selected to the Michigan High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame in 2007. DON MICHAELSON (L’Anse)-Perhaps the best football player in L’Anse High School history, Don Michaelson was also a top performer in basketball and track. He was U.P. Back of the Year and Class C all-state in 1970, then helped the Purple Hornets win the U.P. Class C track title in 1971 by winning shot put and going unbeaten for three years in the 440-yard dash. He will receive his award on Saturday evening, May 4, during the American Hockey Coaches Association annual convention in Naples, FL. Entering Thursday afternoon’s semifinal contest vs. Yale, Bazin’s River Hawks have compiled an overall record of 28-10-2, capturing both the Hockey East regular season and tournament titles along the way. Lowell advanced to the Frozen Four by defeating Wisconsin (6-1) and New Hampshire (2-0) to win the NCAA Northeast Regional in Manchester, NH. The River Hawks enter the Frozen Four in Pittsburgh’s CONSOL Energy Center having won 14 of their last 15 games and seven in a row. On December 1, the UMass Lowell record stood at 4-7-1. Since that time, they have gone 24-3-1. Bazin has been chosen as the Hockey East Coach of the Year in both of his seasons at Lowell. This follows two years as the NESCAC Coach of the Year while he coached at Hamilton College.

Eight individuals who have made unique contributions to amateur hockey in the United States will be recognized during the 2015 AHCA Convention in Naples, Florida, the women’s hockey honorees being recognized on Friday, May 1, and the men’s hockey award recipients feted on Saturday, May 2. Heading the list of award winners is former Boston University head coach Jack Parker, winner of 897 games and three national champi- onships during a 40-year career at BU. Parker will receive the John MacInnes Award. Also being recognized are Bruce Delventhal, athletic director at Plattsburgh State and three-decade officer of the AHCA, who will receive the John “Snooks” Kelley Founders Award, and Karen Kay, former University of New Hampshire and U.S. National Team head coach, who will be presented the Women’s Hockey Founders Award. All awards will be presented at two dinners taking place at the Naples Beach Hotel and Golf Club in Naples, Florida. Here is a detailed look at each of the eight awards and their recipients.
