Much like the UN, the ICC brings representatives from all cricket-playing countries together to make administrative decisions about the future of cricket. Unlike the UN, however, not all countries have an equal input; the ICC decides which members are worthy of “Test” status (Full Members), and which are not (Associate Members). While the Council has experienced many successes, including hosting the prestigious World Cup and promoting cricket at a grassroots level, it also continues to receive its fair share of criticism, predominantly regarding the ICC’s perceived obstruction of the growth of the game within non- traditionally cricketing nations and prioritizing the commercialization of the sport over globalizing it.

  • 2017 Annual Report
Cricket Scotland Annual Report 2017 Chair’s Report Tony Brian Welcome to Cricket Scotland’s Annual Report for 2017 which I hope will give you a good flavour of all that has been happening in Cricket Scotland and the game in Scotland during what has been another year of good progress in delivery of our strategy. I will only mention the major issues as I see them; colleagues will give more detail in the following sections and I do not want to “steal their thunder”! On the High Performance side the men’s team had some excellent results in 2017 with the highlights being the first wins against Full Member countries (Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe) and qualification for the World Cup Qualifier in Zimbabwe in March 2018. Disappointingly, we did not win the 50 over World Cricket League which would have meant Scotland would have entered the 13 Team ODI League from 2020-2022 with the 12 Full Member nations – something that would have given us 24 guaranteed ODIs against top quality opposition over that period with the ability to sell media and commercial rights. One of our focuses over the next round of the WCL will be to ensure we win that and thus get the right to challenge for entry into the next iteration of the 13 Team ODI league. Our women’s team has made good strides during the year, participating in the 50 over World Cup Qualifier in Sri Lanka in February where they performed well against teams which we all saw on our televisions screens during the very successful Women’s World Cup itself in England in the summer.

  • Wales and International Cricket: Some Key Issues
PET(4) CRI 05 Petitions Committee Consultation on petition P-04-335 The Establishment of a Welsh Cricket Team Response from Professor Rod Lyall Wales and International Cricket: Some Key Issues There can be no doubt that in both men’s and women’s cricket Wales could be one of the top six countries in Europe if its administrative structure could be adjusted to enable proper national sides to be fielded and official international fixtures to be played. More drastic changes would be needed to allow Wales to become an Associate member of the ICC since the links to the England and Wales Cricket Board would need to be changed for either the CBW or the WCA to be recognised as the official governing body. If Wales is serious about international cricket on a par with Scotland and Ireland, however, these issues will need to be addressed. Roy Morgan, Encyclopedia of World Cricket (Cheltenham 2007), 237 Unquestionably, the current status of Welsh cricket is in many respects anomalous. Although there have been periods in which a Welsh national team has been regarded as an international side on the same basis as those of other countries – even participating in the first-ever ICC Trophy in 1979, despite the fact that Wales was not an Associate member of the International Cricket Council – this has never become an established practice, and for most purposes cricket in Wales forms a minor part of the England and Wales Cricket Board (significantly, referred to both by itself and by others as the ECB). It should not be thought, however, that this is a unique anomaly, or that the relationship between national status in cricket and political statehood is self-evident.

The Great Game: The rise of Afghan cricket from exodus and war Author : Kate Clark Published: 28 March 2017 Downloaded: 5 September 2018 Download URL: https://www.afghanistan-analysts.org/the-great-game-the-rise-of-afghan-cricket-from-exodus-and-war/?format=pdf Afghanistan continues to make inroads into the world of cricket. The men’s team has progressed from being a disorganised band of reckless hitters of the ball in the early 2000s to a well-balanced team. Two Afghans recently got contracts to play in the biggest cricket league in the world, the Indian Premier League, with deals worth hundreds of thousands of dollars. AAN’s cricket-loving Sudhanshu Verma and ‘not very interested in cricket’ Kate Clark look at how, in two decades, Afghan men have come to compete with the big boys of the game. Afghan women’s cricket, though, they say, has barely begun. For any reader who finds cricket something of a mystery, a brief description of how the game works can be found in an Appendix. For readers interested in sport generally, they might also like to read our reports on Afghan football, brought together in a dossier here. 18-year-old Afghan national team player, Rashid Khan, was in Harare, the capital of Zimbabwe, playing for Afghanistan in a One Day International series on 20 February 2017, when bidding for 1 / 13 the Indian Premier League (1) began. The IPL is the biggest, richest cricket league in the world, watched by millions and attracting the world’s top players. Every year before the season starts, the eight IPL teams bid for new players.

  • Jonathan Edwards MP Towards a National Future for Welsh Cricket – Jonathan Edwards MP
PET(4) CRI 02 Petitions Committee Consultation on petition P-04-335 The Establishment of a Welsh Cricket Team Response from Jonathan Edwards MP Towards a National Future for Welsh Cricket – Jonathan Edwards MP Introduction It has been an issue of contention for supporters of cricket in Wales for many years that current arrangements mean that a Welsh national team is not allowed to compete in global International Cricket Council (ICC) one day and Twenty20 tournaments. Wales, a cricketing nation with a proud and venerable tradition, finds itself conspicuous in its absence on the global stage, whilst countries with arguably less of a tradition and a weaker player base have graced competitions in both formats of the game. A Welsh national team has not graced the global stage since the inaugural ICC tournament in 1979, although the Welsh Women’s team has competed in international tournaments as recently as 2005. The creation of the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) in 1997 to govern the game in both countries has had undoubted benefits, not least the historic staging of an Ashes Test match in 2009, and the remarkable development of Sophia Gardens into a World Class cricket centre. However, the inclusion of Wales within the ECB structure has created an open sore in relation to the legitimate international ambitions of Welsh cricket supporters and players. Wales has twice as many clubs as Scotland and four to five times as many as Ireland. Wales has a cricketing grass roots equivalent to New Zealand and a total population similar to New Zealand, who is a full member of the ICC and test playing nation.
