A quick look back on the 2015 SPRINT CAR racing scene

Wow...What a season that was!

The 2015 Sprint Car season -some of which is covered in this publication - produced some of the most exhilarating, most colourful and in many instances most surprising racing action witnessed by fans in many years.

There was certainly plenty of excitement wherever one turned be it in the local weekly shows, the yearly summer specials, the Championship points battles and yes even in the qualifiers where just making the A-Main features became more intense.

On the local front, Ohsweken Speedway was the stage for much of the excitement with a tight three-way battle for the Corr/Pak Merchandising trophy; the surprising win by an "outsider" in the /Arrow Express Six Nations Showdown; and the dramatic ending to the Canadian Sprint Car Nationals to mention but a few.

The Southern Ontario Sprints season was not without its share of upsets with a new champion crowned, a couple of veterans returning to the winners' circle, a driver from another division steeling the thunder; and some new faces adding youth to the mix.

And there were certainly plenty of thrills, spills and chills on the Patriot Sprint Tour and Empire Super Sprints scene were many of the competitors crossed lines to face off against one another.

Both series produced some surprise challengers for the championship while other favourites faded from the chase.

A new champion was greeted in the PST America series while last year's Canada Series Champion successfully defended his title.

A five -time Empire Super Sprints champion became the sanctioning body's six-time champion and some old favourites showed they hadn't lost their touch when challenging for the title.

Perhaps the biggest surprise in these parts came on September 19th when Bryan

Howland of Auburn, NY made history in the most exciting finish in Canadian Sprint Car Nationals history, becoming the first driver to win the CSCN A-Feature after qualifying from a B-Feature. He officially led only laps 33 and 35 to steal the $12,000 prize from Steve Poirier, Parker Price-Miller, and a quickly-closing Mark Smith.

Coming a close second in the 2015 highlight reel had to be the win of full-time Modified driver/ part-time Sprint Car driver Stewart Friesen in the Arrow Express Six Nations Showdown . Originally from Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, Friesen who now resides in Sprakers, New York with wife Jessica Zemken, was competing in just the fourth World of Outlaws Sprint Car series event of his career and is now the first Canadian to win a World of Outlaws feature on home soil. His win is the first World of Outlaws triumph for a Canadian since Tim Gee went to victory lane at Paragon, Indiana on July 13, 1983.

Adding to the highlight reel have to be the achievements of several regulars who compete on the local scene. These included...

• Mitch Brown for his Championship season in the Southern Ontario Sprints and his three-way battle with Glenn Styres and Todd Hoddick for Ohsweken's title.

•The Turner family for the first feature wins of Jamie and Cory in Sprint Car competition and the "Rookie of the Year" honours for Ryan. Ryan's trophy was also won by dad Jamie in 2010 and Cory last year. • Glenn Styres 50 Feature win in the 360s and his fifth Ohsweken Championship • Charlie Sandercock's first win in a Sprint Car

There were many more that are worthy of recognition and others will certainly arise as Sprint Car racing returns to an oval near you in 2016.

If you're a motorsports fan or someone seeking great value for your entertainment dollars you just have to catch some of the action and excitement of Sprint Car Racing next season.

Glenn Styres captured his second straight Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car Championship and fifth Ohsweken Speedway track title in 2015 in a captivating season that saw a three-way battle for the coveted winner's trophy..

He's the King of His Own Domain 5TH TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP FOR THE "OHSWEKEN FLYER"

For the second time in the past two seasons, Glenn Styres came out the winner in a tight three- way battle for the Corr/Pak Merchandising Sprint Car Championship at Ohsweken Speedway.

It marked the fifth time since the 3/8th-mile oval started running Sprint Cars on a regular basis in 2005 that the Ohsweken track owner has taken home the title.

This past season Styres survived a couple of close calls in his run to the championship with Todd

Hoddick of Cheektowaga, NY and last year's closest rival Mitch Brown of Brantford posing serious threats to dethrone the defending champion, but both faltered late in the final events of the season.

The five-time champion got off to a rather unusual start to the season campaign with two DNFs in the first four events then went on a five straight feature win tear from June 30th through July 24th clearly stating his intentions to be the driver to catch in 2015.

Despite that amazing string he still found himself trailing Hoddick by 2 points and tied with Brown for second place in the standings

A third-place finish at Ohsweken on July 27th combined with an 8th-place run by Hoddick moved the driver of the Ohsweken Speedway; CASE IH Tractors; Rochester Knighthawks; Arrow Express-sponsored Sprinter into the points lead with Brown just 2 points behind and Hoddick 8 more back.

The August 7th race with the combined Corr/Pak Sprints and the Patriot Sprint Tour left the standings unchanged but on August 21 with Hoddick finishing second, Styres finishing third and Brown out with engine problems, Glenn's lead had shrunk to six over Hoddick.

The road to the championship took another twist on August 28th when Hoddick took a wild ride and almost flipped after contact with Styres on lap 14, as both drivers raced with Mitch Brown just inside the top 10. Hoddick restarted and eventually finished 15th. Styres survived the mishap and finished 7th in the race with a 22 point lead over Hoddick with only one night of racing left on the regular schedule.

On September 4th all Styres needed to cement the championship was to finish 9th or better in Glenn Styres reached a milestone with the A-Main and he did what he needed to do despite an anxious moment when he stopped on the 25th Ohsweken Speedway feature the track on lap 16 with a suspected flat tire. win of his career on July 10th. Styres used a slide job to take the lead from Mitch Discovering that his tire wasn’t flat after all, Styres restarted well outside the top 10, and Brown on lap 16, and went on to win by advanced to take the 9th spot with 2 laps remaining. 1.829 seconds.

Meanwhile, Hoddick faded to 6th after being as high as 3rd.

Styres claimed the championship by 16 points over Hoddick with Brown finishing third, 21 points back of leader.

No doubt Glenn will be out to defend his title in 2016 but with the likes of Hoddick, Brown, the Turner boys and a handful of others clawing for recognition he will face some stiff competition in the track's weekly "Friday Night Excitement".

Fifth Track Title for the

"Ohsweken Flyer"

2015 OHSWEKEN SPEEDWAY'S "DRIVER OF THE YEAR"

Todd Hoddick has certainly made steady progress in the six years since his defection from the asphalt ovals and late Model racing.

In 2015 the affable Cheektowaga, NY racer started the season with a seventh-place finish in the Corr/Pak Merchandising A-Main then strung together eight straight top-five finishes through July 24th including his first Sprint Car feature win on May 29th.

That run saw him out in front and looking strong in the Championship standings but that lead started to erode with a string of five straight wins by Styres following a DNF by the "Ohsweken Flyer" on June 19th.

With his 9th-place run in the Summer Nationals Todd found himself third in the tight standings 10 points behind Styres and 8 back of Mitch Brown.

A strong second-place run August 21st - one place ahead of Styres -saw the points gap between the two narrow to just 6 points.

Todd's chase to the championship appeared to end on August 29th when he took a wild ride and almost flipped after he and Styres made contact on lap 14. He was able to restart the chase but could only reach 15th place at the finish line leaving him 22 points behind Styres with one night of racing left on the regular schedule. His sixth-place run on September 4th was three spots better than Styres but 16 points shy of the championship. Gary Eves Photo

Congratulations to Todd for not only being voted Ohsweken Speedway's "Driver of The Year" but for earning the "Sportsmanship Award' for his unselfish actions on August 21st in the loaning of an engine to Mitch Brown -his closest rival in the points race.

TITLE RUN FALLS SHORT FOR MITCH BROWN

For most of the 2015 season,Photo Mitch byBrown Gary looked Eves as though he might finally realize his goal of winning the Corr/Pak Championship he had fought so hard to capture.

In 2014 he was in the hunt for the elusive title falling short by

a mere 27 points to Glenn Styres.

This season Mitch started with a 4th-place run on opening night then raced to the feature win one week later.

On May 29th he and Todd Hoddick hooked up in a seesaw battle for the win in the 20-lap A-Main but had to settles for a solid second place finish.

Following two disappointing runs on June 19th and June 30th the 22 year old competitor had a run of five podium finishes in six events including his first ever feature win in the August 7th Corr/Pak vs Empire Super Sprints A-Main.

But that elation came to an abrupt end a week later with engine problems that virtually ended his bid for the championship.

Eighth and fifth-place finishes in Ohsweken Speedway's final two points nights of the season were not good enough to catch the points leaders

despite their problems on August 29th and September 4th.

Gary Eves Photo Depending what happens during the off season he'll be back in 2016 in an even more determined effort to take the Ohsweken crown.

2015 saw a mixture of seasoned veterans, a couple of past champions and a corps of impressive "Rookies" in this year's chase for the Corr/Pak Merchandising 360 Title - including these who ended in the top-ten.

DYLAN WESTBROOK CLAIMS STRICKLAND’S GMC CRATE SPRINT CAR CHAMPIONSHIP

Dylan Westbrook scored 3 A-Main wins in the Strickland's GMC Crate Sprint Car Division in 2015 despite two DNFs but with 6 other top five finishes he had a comfortable lead in the standings heading into the home stretch of the season.

Dylan entered the final points night of the season needing only to start the A-Feature, and that’s all he was able to do, as he crashed in the first turn along with Mark Czuba, Jeremy Hughes and Josh Shantz. The Scotland, ON driver avoided damage to his car, restarted and posted a 14th-place finish.

Westbrook won the championship by 23 points over Jake Brown with 2014 Champion Ryan Hunsinger coming home third in the standings.

Westbrook was also impressive during the 360 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals weekend earning the Nathan Ackland State Farm Insurance Fastest Canadian Qualifier Award but fell to 22nd after a strong early race run. He also recorded a third place finish in A-Feature #1 in The Burger Barn Night Before The Nationals.

HATS OFF to TEAM TURNER on a terrific season on the Sprint Car circuit in 2015

It was a season of firsts for the racing family with Cory Turner charging to his first career feature win at Brighton Speedway in the Southern Ontario Sprints event on August 8th then dad Jamie racing to his first career Sprint Car victory in the Ohsweken Corr/Pak A-Main on August 29th.

To top the season off Ryan Turner finished 9th in the standings at Ohsweken to take "Rookie of the Year" honours - an award won by Jamie in 2010 and brother Cory in 2014. (Note: Ryan also capped the "Rookie of the Year" award in the Southern Ontario Sprints this season.)

“(The win) will make the ride home sweet,” Jones said in victory lane. “We’ll have something to talk about! During a commercial airline flight, an Air Force pilot was seated next to a young mother with a baby in her arms. When the baby began crying during the descent for landing, the mother began nursing the infant as discreetly as possible.

The pilot pretended not to notice and, upon disembarking, he gallantly offered his assistance to help with the various baby-related items.

When the young mother expressed her gratitude, the pilot responded, "You have a beautiful baby...and he sure was hungry!"

Somewhat embarrassed, the mother explained that her pediatrician said that the time spent

on the breast would help alleviate the pressure in the baby's ears.

The Pilot sadly shook his head, and in true pilot fashion exclaimed, "And all these years, I've been chewing gum."

After two seasons of apprenticing in the 602 Crate Gary Eves Photo Sprint Cars, Jake Brown is moving up to the 360 Sprint Cars in 2016.

The announcement came shortly after the 2015 wrapped up but was rumoured to be in his plans a few weeks before Ohsweken's regular season ended.

Engine problems with his brother's car prevented his intentions of running a few late season 360 events.

SOLID SEASON FOR JAKE BROWN IN STRICKLAND'S CRATE DIVISION

JAKE BROWN waited until the last points' night of the season to find the winner's circle in 2015 but his overall performance throughout the second season of competing in the Strickland's 602 Crate Division certainly showed his determination in challenging for the championship.

The second year Sprint Car competitor started with a sixth place finish in Ohsweken Speedway's season opener on May 15th but dropped to 8th the following week.

A questionable DQ following a third-place run on June 19th was subsequently overturned but the next race out he fell to 8th in the 15-lap A-Feature.

On July 3rd he was back in form finishing 4th then fired back with a 3rd-place run on July 10th.

The next two weeks he raced to sixth-place finishes but was back on the podium chasing Holly Porter and point's leader Dylan Westbrook to the checkered flag.

Despite his win to wrap up the season his 5th, 7th and 8th-place finishes heading into the final points night weren't enough to challenge Westbrook's lead.

In 2014 Jake ended third in the final points' standings winning two feature events and finishing in the top-five on 10 other occasions at Ohsweken. He also added another A-Main win in a special event at South Buxton Raceway south of Chatham, ON.

Is he ready for the move to 360 Sprint Cars?

"We felt he was ready for a couple of events this year," responded dad Doug, who oversees the team's operations, when posed with the question.

"We were planning to have him run a couple of Southern Ontario Sprints events at the end of this past season and perhaps test his mettle in the wrap events at Ohsweken but Mitch had some engine issues that forced us to forego those plans," added the team's mentor.

Sponsorship will be key to running the Corr/Pak Merchandising schedule at Ohsweken in 2016 but the team is forging ahead with the equipment they have on hand to build some cars for the campaign.

Wings and Whips

EDDIE GREEN IS IN THE BUSINESS OF RACING Ohsweken's Ed Green has a passion for horsepower and racing ..quite a combination when you're talking the 300hp-plus type

that power4-wheel race cars or the more graceful one horse power type that pull a 2-wheel sulky.

The self-proclaimed entrepreneur feels comfortable with both but is just now getting his feet wet in the 602 Strickland’s GMC Crate Sprint Car division at Ohsweken Speedway. This past

season was his 'Rookie" year where he finished 12th in the highly competitive division.

In the Standardbred Racing profession Eddie has enjoyed a great deal of success both as a driver and trainer but sold most of his stable in mid-summer. Gary Eves Photo

When questioned of the decision, he merely shrugged his shoulders explaining that it was a temporary move with the price being right. He has since purchased a few more of the Standardbreds that he plans on training along with his son Keelan.

For the past year he's been busy partnering with Mitch Brown Racing who are building a few cars for Green's 2016 Sprint Car season. Although his best night of racing at Ohsweken Speedway came on May 29th where he ran to a 2nd-place finish in his qualifier then motored to a fine third-place finish in the feature event, he's not disappointed in the results chalking it up to a learning experience that he hopes to resolve come 2016.

Yes Wings and Whips- certainly quite a combination!

LOYET, HOWLAND, BROWN, STAMBAUGH, WESTBROOK, & BAZUIN TAKE WINS IN THE

BURGER BARN NIGHT BEFORE THE NATIONALS360 SPRINT CARS (52 entries)

Brad Loyet and Bryan Howland earned guaranteed starting positions in the September 19 Canadian Sprint Car Nationals A-Feature with victories in the Night Before the Nationals Twin 15’s on Friday night. Each of them started at the front of the field and led from flag to flag, but had to work hard on a very fast track surface.

Loyet set a new 15 lap 360 Sprint Car track record in the first A-Feature at 3:33.107, while Sam Hafertepe, Jr. moved up and wrestled the runner-up spot away from Dylan Westbrook, who settled for 3rd. Scott Kreutter finished 4th, and 8th starter Mark Smith rounded out the top 5.

Howland built a big lead in the second A-Feature, but twice saw his advantage erased by caution flags for Kris Root. The second restart took place on lap 13, and saw 7th starter Jared Horstman throw a banzai move on Howland in turns 1 and 2. Unfazed by the slide job, Howland drove back around Horstman and on to the win. Horstman held off Jordan Thomas, 12th starter Michael Parent, and Justin Barger to take the runner-up spot.

Mitch Brown claimed the win in the annual Night Before the Nationals all-star race, now called the Dave MacLeod Memorial Shootout, and set a new 12 lap 360 Sprint Car track record at 2:47.351.

Max Stambaugh prevailed over Parker Price-Miller in the 2nd annual Kevin Ward, Jr. Young Stars Challenge. The two exchanged slide jobs several times before Stambaugh drove to the win. The only red flag of the night occurred in the Young Stars Challenge when Joe Trenca appeared to suffer a mechanical failure, and collected Alex Hill. Both drivers walked away from the hard collision.

The Seventh Different PST America Champion of Patriot Sprint Tour

Entering his fourth season of Sprint Car competition, Sammy Reakes IV of Palermo, NY had decided to expand his racing horizons. He had travelled to four tracks for the first time and two others for the second time, all the while finishing every race in the top 10 and turning heads everywhere he had gone.

During the three month season on the 2015 Patriot Sprint Tour schedule he scored two wins and five podium finishes along the way.

Heading to Black Rock Speedway Reakes IV on August 7th for the final points night of the schedule Reakes held a 61-point advantage over Kyle Drum of Wayland, NY who had been closing in over the last few races. But with Reakes sterling top-10 record, the gap had remained.

On that night it was simply a matter of starting the feature to guarantee “The Honeybadger” his claim to the seventh PST America Championship. He not only started the race but went on to chase defending champion Jared Zimbardi of Bradford, PA to the checkered flag.

“The car was on a rail tonight, Jared was just a little bit better,” noted Reakes after the event. “I felt like in lapped traffic I could run with him and if we stayed in traffic I might have had a shot but to win this championship is just Sammy Reakes IV was officially crowned with his first career PST America Series amazing.” Championship on Saturday November 14th at the Patriot Sprint Tour's Annual

After countless heartbreaks, he finally got the monkey off his back and claimed his first Patriot

“Finally, Finally! It’s great to win here in my own back yard,” declared Collins, who lives in Belfast, NY, just 25 miles down the road from Freedom

Motorsports Park, making the ¼- mile the closest stop to home on the Patriot Tour. Collins led all 25 laps of the Casey’s Truck Salvage A-Main, but there were some tenuous moments before the “Flying Physician” could break through for the win.

In addition to his win, Collins also garnered 11 other top-10 finishes (4 of those in the top-5) to finish third in the PST -America Championship points.

JARED ZIMBARDI EDGES JASON BARNEY FOR 2015 PST CANADA CHAMPIONSHIP

Jared Zimbardi of Bradford PA was the defending PST America and Canadian Series Champion entering the 2015 campaign and was once again looking forward to capturing both titles in 2015.

A combination of events interrupted his bid for the PST America title including some runs in 410 Sprint Car competition and the birth of his first child.

In his first start on the tour's schedule north of the border Zimbardi got off to a surprising slow start with a fifth-place run at Merrittville Speedway on May 25th with arch-rival Jason Barney of Brewerton, NY scoring the win. Following five straight top-4 finishes in the America tour Zimbardi proved that he was rounding into form by refusing to allow adversity throw him off his path. A week after wrecking a chassis that he drove to 11 wins, "The Juice" scored his second Canadian win -third of the year in the combined America/Canada- in the PST- Jared Zimbardi 28, of Bradford, PA, was also highly-acclaimed at the Patriot Sprint Ohsweken Challenge. JASON BARNEY #87 of Brewerton, NY looked as though he had a shot at dethroning Jared Zimbardi from his defence of the Championship title in the PST/Canada portion of the Patriot Sprint Tour as the series headed into its two final races of the season.

A disappointing finish at Cornwall on August 23rd erased that opportunity and left him 10 points short in his bid.

JUSTIN MARTIN #7M from Rodney, ON finished third in this year's Patriot Sprint Tour Canada schedule.

The 2009 Southern Ontario Sprints Champion also spend some time running 410 events and other 360 races at Ohsweken.
