A year ago I received an enquiry from someone in Leeds who was interested in race walking but they were quickly discouraged when they found out that the nearest clubs were in Bradford, York or Sheffield. Now regular, proper training sessions are taking place in public parks in Leeds, and a local recruitment drive is planned.

The appointment earlier this year of Andi Drake as Director for Racewalking, with the full support of Leeds Metropolitan University and UK Athletics has provided a focal point at a national level, and is starting to show early signs of success.

The establishment of a National Racewalking Centre based at the university, with state of the art facilities and staff has attracted a group of dedicated athletes and created a true community spirit among them. They live and train together and support each other, providing an environment that has proven successful in other countries but had been seriously lacking within the UK.

Researchers at the university are also showing an interest, with several projects now taking place involving analysis, planning, and marketing of our sport. As more events such as races, conferences and training weekends are announced, and media coverage generated, the future is looking more and more positive.

Long term plans start with the World Cup in in May, where a top eight finish for the Boys Team could prove that race walking is BACK as serious sport!
