This belt is considered special because it is where the sun, the moon, and the planets all move. The word zodiac means “circle of figures” or “circle of life”. As the earth revolves around the sun, different parts of the sky become visible. Each month, one of the 12 constellations show up above the horizon in the east and disappears below the horizon in the west. If you are born under a particular sign, the constellation it is named for can’t be seen at night. Instead, the sun is passing through it around that time of year making it a daytime constellation that you can’t see! CLASSROOM ACTIVITY Creating a Constellation General Information Level: elementary 1st and 2nd cycles. Students per group: individual activity. How long: two 60-minute periods. Where: in class. When: before visiting the Planetarium. Type of activity: discovery led by the teacher. Key words: constellations — stars — legends — mythology. Skills honed: observing, classifying, inventing concepts, researching, developing motor skills, writing, communicating, fostering creativity. Starting Point What is a constellation? What picture does a group of stars evoke? Can I create my own constellation and think up a story about it? Preconceptions Students, particularly younger ones, might not know what a constellation is. They may also believe that the constellations are the same for all people on Earth and that everyone who looks at a specific group of stars sees the same thing in it. Basic Concepts From time immemorial, people have pondered the heavens. In the patterns formed by neighbour- ing stars, different cultures have seen animals, mythical creatures, legendary heroes, and objects of cultural importance. These groups of randomly linked stars are known as constellations. They then compare their creations with what other students have thought up and what other cultures have seen in the same group of stars. Winter 2015 Star Light, Star Bright, Let’s Find Some Stars Tonight! Finding specific stars in the night sky might seem overwhelming. All those stars! At a glance stars look like a million twinkling points of light that are impossible to sort out. But with a little information, you may discover hunting some stars is not so difficult. Turns out we don’t see a million stars. Less than a couple thousand – and usually many fewer than that – are visible to most people’s unaided eyes. The brightest and nearest stars are easily found without a telescope or binoculars. Stars Are Not Star-shaped Stars are big balls of gas that give off heat and light. Sound familiar? Isn’t that what our Sun does? Guess what, our Sun is a star. It seems confusing, but all stars are suns. Like our Sun, stars are also in the daytime sky. During the day, the Sun lights up the atmosphere so we can’t see other suns… er…stars. Pull Out and Save Our Sun isn’t even the brightest star. In fact all the stars we see at night are bigger and brighter than the Sun. It wins the brightness contest during the day simply because it is incredibly closer than all the other stars. (At night we don’t see the Sun because of Earth’s rotation. Our Sun is shining on the opposite side of Earth and we are in darkness.) Suns or Stars Appear to Rise and Set Our view of the stars changes through the night as Earth makes its daily rotation. -

Astronomy is an evidence based science. • We measure the intensity, arrival direction, wavelength, arrival time and polarisation state. • Astronomical sources are so far away that the parts of the spherical wavefronts that are ultimately collected by the telescope aperture are essentially flat just before they enter the Earth’s atmosphere. • A telescope is a device that collects pieces of incoming wavefronts and focuses them, i.e. turns them into converging spherical wavefronts. • An instrument is a device that comes after the telescope. It receives the wavefronts and further processes them by either optically manipulating them or converting the energy into measurable signals, or both. Astronomy for Kids - Leo The Lion Leo is another companion to Orion in our night sky. You can easily find Leo any Leo Map time that Orion is visible by looking East of the Great Hunter. Although Leo is not as large as Orion, it's distinctive shape makes it very easy to pick out. If you click on the link for the map of Leo on the right, you will notice that the outline of the lion's head and the triangle formed by the stars in the lion's hindquarters are two very distinctive shapes that make this constellation very easy to spot. A map of Leo. Regulus - the Heart of the Lion The largest and brightest star in Leo is Regulus. This large blue star shines brightly as the heart of the lion. Although not a giant star, Regulus is still over five times as large as our Sun. A small telescope will show you that Regulus is part of what is called a "binary system". Binary stars are stars that have one or more companions that orbit around the largest star in the group, much like the planets orbit around our Sun.
