your Wimbotsham February 2017 No Cold calling Zone

Zone Success The residents of Napthans Lane have achieved their first success in combating cold callers.

Over three months last year residents of Napthans Lane experienced persistent attempts by a rogue trader selling a driveway cleaning service. The person was very pushy and returned several times to the same households. There were only verbal quotes given and the 14 day calling off period was not observed.

The No Cold Calling Zone was set up in September last year and on the first occasion the same cold caller visited the road in mid -February 2017, a call was immediately logged on the Consumer Advice helpline. Acting on the telephone call, Trading Standards officers visited Napthans Lane on the same day but were unable to connect with the cold caller. However, the officers did speak with several residents and obtained sufficient information which they linked with their previous intelligence of similar incidents in Norfolk. They have now been able to identify the "company" and have a permanent address. Trading Standards will be taking action on various aspects of the company's behaviour, such as misleading behaviour, consumer rights and methods of trading. Submitted by Carolyn Seymour

your Wimbotsham February 2017 Church News By the time the Y our Wimbotsham Magazine is published, my husband David and I will have moved away from the Rectory, but I hope it is not too late to say 'good - bye, and every blessing' on this community. We arrived in December 2010, and in January 2011 I was formally licensed as the "House -for -Duty Priest -in -Charge of the Bardolph Group of Parishes". The House - for -Duty bit meant that I was not being paid, but got the Rectory to live in, and of course the Bardolph Group consists of Wimbotsham, , Stow Bridge and (which includes Barroway Drove and Salter's Lode). We both agree that these last six years have been very happy ones but, of course, during that time we have not got any younger. David is a good deal older than most people imagine, but it is the age of a priest -in -charge which is significant in this case; and, at three score years and ten just before Christmas, I have reached the point where the Church of no longer allows me to be a priest -in -charge. Moving on at this time is allowing some strategic thinking to take place within the Deanery (the thirty -two parishes around here) and the Diocese of Ely of which we are part. All being well, it will not be too long before plans are finalised and the future will become a reality. In the meantime the regular pattern of services will continue: - First Sunday of the month at Stow Bardolph at 10.30 am Second Sunday at Stow Bridge at 10.30 am Third Sunday at Nordelph (Village Hall) at 10.30 am Fourth Sunday at Wimbotsham at 10.30 am When there is a fifth Sunday, the notice boards will show where the service will take place. Of course in the next few months there are a number of special services in the church's calendar: - Ash Wednesday (March 1 - the start of Lent) at Wimbotsham at 7.30 pm Maundy Thursday (April 13) at Wimbotsham at 7.30 pm Good Friday (April 14) at Stow Bridge at 2.00 pm and the Easter Day service (April 16) will be at Nordelph at 10.30 am. You are, of course, welcome at any of these services - as someone once said: "The Church is the only organisation that exists for the benefit of non -members"! For any information, or to arrange a baptism or wedding, please contact the church wardens, Liz and Philip Wing (01366 388954). And so, a final 'good -bye' and 'God bless'.

your Wimbotsham February 2017 Friends and Neighbours The Friends and Neighbours Club had an entertaining end to the year. On 30 th November we enjoyed our Christmas Lunch at The Chequers. The table was set out nicely, there were crackers to pull and the service was good. We had a two course lunch (with a choice of dishes) and there was plenty to eat. They did us proud.

Our meeting on the 7 th December comprised a Christmas tea (lots to eat as usual) and instead of exchanging cards we had a collection for charity. Scotty’s Little Soldiers, who had given us a talk in February, was pulled out of the hat.

To round off the year on Wednesday, 21 st December several of us went to see “Cinderella” at the Corn Exchange. We had a fun time (oh no we didn’t, OH YES WE DID!) with lots of laughs.

Programme for 2017: 22 nd February noon lunch at The Chequers (not a set meal) 29 th March 2 - 4 village hall 26 th April 2 – 4 village hall – AGM 31 st May 2 – 5 village hall – 51 st birthday tea 28 th June lunch out 26 th July summer outing all to be arranged 30 th August garden party 27 th September 2 – 4 Harvest Festival at the Methodist Chapel 25 th October 2 – 4 village hall 29 th November Christmas Lunch 6th December 2 – 4 village hall - Christmas tea

your Wimbotsham February 2017 We were entertained by a local brass band who happily opah'ed some traditional carols that went down well. Local resident Don gave us a chat and others contributed to the evenings entertainment which concluded with a raffle of the many donated prizes and a sumptuous buffet kindly donated by local residents. Our thanks go to all of those who made it possible and we look forward to next years event.

Keep an eye on our facebook page Steve Mingay: Chairman 01366 384063 [email protected] Carol Concert The event took place in the village hall which was decorated to reflect the season by volunteers. Garlands and a tree really set the mood, along with some wall wreaths. The concert was well attended by a number of locals who came along for a singsong of traditional carols that encompassed some humorous activities around the 12 days of Christmas!
