DEAR FRIENDS AND FAMILIES OF LFHS HOCKEY

What an exciting time to be a part of Lake Forest Scouts Hockey! For the first time in our programs history, we rostered three competitive teams: two varsity, and one junior varsity. The expansion of the club enabled us to welcome seventeen talented freshman players to our JV team, which is off to a strong start, having just finished 6-1-1 in the seeding round. These young players are the future of our club, and we are thrilled that they chose to play Scouts Hockey. Rostering three teams has been challenging, but rewarding as it took the dedicated efforts of our board members to hire additional coaches, secure ice time and manage the extra responsibilities that come with a third team.

The 2015-2016 season had many highlights, including the varsity team winning the Sterling Division Championship, Michael Gaidas being named the IHSHL North Central Division goalie of the year, and Connor Knop the IHSHL North Central Division offensive player of the year. We wish both of our Blue and Gold Varsity teams much success this season as the seasoned veterans on these teams provide leadership to our new players that have decided to play hockey for their high school.

The JV Team had a very successful season that started with winning the Ann Arbor Big Bear Tournament, and an undefeated seeding round that earned them a spot in the championship bracket. They finished the season in third place and were semi- finalists in the playoffs. Goalie, AJ Carani was selected IHSHL North Central, Champion JV Sportsmanship Player of the Year.

The Scouts excelled on and off the ice last season, as we had twelve players make honor roll, four juniors selected for the National Honor Society, and two Cum Laude honors. As in past years, the club was actively involved with GLASA and raised money for two additional organizations, CROYA and A Safe Place.

As we are at the mid-point of our 2016-2017 season, I find myself reflecting back to when our current seniors started the program as freshmen. It’s been a true pleasure and honor to watch these boys develop into strong, confident young men. Come spring; seventeen seniors will be wrapping up their Scouts Hockey career. Our club is grateful to these players and families for dedicating four years of their time to us; selling ads, hill runs, late night practices, tournaments, selling Christmas trees, working at the tree lot and of course, playing the great game of hockey!

Our club could not exist without the generous support of our advertisers, sponsors, trees & greens customers, and the parent volunteers that make it all possible. Scouts Hockey is an outstanding hockey community to be a part of, thanks to the countless hours and effort that our parents and players put forth. Lastly, we are very thankful for the strong relationship that we have with Lake Forest High School; while high school hockey is not an ISHA sanctioned sport, the support of LFHS is critical to the success of our hockey program.

See you around the rink and GO SCOUTS!

Steve Steve Hardy, President

1 DEAR PARENTS AND SCOUT HOCKEY FANS

I want to take this opportunity to welcome all the new and existing Scout Hockey players and parents. We are extremely excited about the 2016- 2017 season. The number of young players that have recently joined our program and continue to demonstrate a high level of skill will prove to be a solid foundation to build our hockey program. High School hockey can be an exciting and rewarding opportunity for your player to learn new skills, make new friends, and have fun. Our Scout coaching staff will set the same expectations for all players and we believe that by providing a positive environment while competing within the highest level, your players development will follow. In most cases a player will get out what they put in. On that note, it is especially rewarding to see players improve their skills and development over the summer months. Our coaching staff will convey the importance to all players to trust in their teammates and compete as a team not individuals. Without this key ingredient a high level of team success will be hard to achieve. Coaching Philosophy 1. I believe that players gain confidence and a love for the game through positive feedback from parents, coaches, and other players. Skill level develops at different rates for kids, but effort and having fun can always be achieved. I try to always provide positive feedback for effort. 2. I think it’s important that a coach takes more than a casual interest in the players. I strive to talk with all the players 1 on 1 at some point during the practices and games. I may not be successful getting to every player each day, but I want them to know that I’m interested in what they have to say and more importantly, I want them to know that their coach likes them as a person also. 3. I believe in trying to make practices as fun and entertaining for the players as possible, while providing the practice and instruction that they need to improve. I’ve found that players respond to well to structured and organized practices. 4. Teamwork and developing friendships is an important part of any team sport. I always try to tell players how important it is for them to support each other and to always be positive towards their teammates. 5. Competition is an important element of any sport and as kids grow they naturally become more competitive. Effort and attitude is my focus. If we can achieve that, then chances are we’ll win the number of games that we are capable of winning. Objectives: Help our players develop the skills necessary to be successful at this level and to prepare our players for their next season. 1. To have fun and help each player develop a love for the game. 2. Learn about the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship. 3. Give positive reinforcement based on effort rather than results. 4. Provide a safe and healthy environment for all players on the team. 5. Have fun and always give your best effort. 6. I expect players to always show respect for the coaches, parents, and other players. 7. To continue to establish the ground work that will help build a tradition of winning within the Scout hockey program. Let’s make the 2016 -2017 season special and full of great memories.

Best Regards, John Murphy, Varsity Blue Head Coach & Director of Hockey 2 3 WELCOME TO THE 2016-17 HOCKEY SEASON!

The leaves beginning to fall and every muscle beginning to ache can only mean one thing, hockey season has started! The anxiousness and excitement that Fall brings a hockey player is something that can’t be replicated. Embrace the nerves and enjoy the journey! Competing on such an organized stage like this, is a privilege. Congratulations to all Scout players for making it here!

The Varsity Gold coaching staff thanks all Scout families, returning and new, for making this historical season come to life. I’ve been fortunate enough to watch this program grow and evolve from my Scout playing days, beginning in ‘98 to what it has become today. Being a part of the largest Scout program in history is an honor that coach Mike McCann and I truly appreciate.

With our recent growth as a program, we now have a more diverse range of ages and playing backgrounds. This being the first year of Varsity hockey, for all gold players, team synergy will be crucial. Having a solid core of leaders from one our best Junior Varsity teams in history, will no doubt expedite the process. Our main focus will be on hard work, trusting teammates and accountability. Every player must rely on his teammates, and know his teammates are relying on him. That burden will always elevate a players level of compete.

Bringing every player up to the top of their game, mentally and physically, is in our team’s best interest. That’s what we expect to do. I truly expect every player on the team to grow, as a player, more than any season prior. The veteran scouts intermingled with our new young talents, all playing at the Varsity level for the first time, will certainly promote that growth. Coach Mike and I will provide a positive and productive environment to get the most of these young men, on and off the ice. We look to the entire Scout program’s future and are excited for a fun and memorable season!

Johnny Murphy Varsity Gold Head Coach

4 5 WELCOME TO THE 2016-17 HOCKEY SEASON!

I’d like to take this opportunity to tell you how proud Coach Tom McKinnon and I are to put on the blue and gold and join the Lake Forest Scouts Hockey Program.

Having coached high school level hockey for some time in Illinois, I’ve always considered the Lake Forest Scouts program to be among the very best. I am thankful to Coach John Murphy, the entire Scouts coaching staff and the Scouts board for this opportunity. A big thank you to all the players, parents and volunteers that have gone out of their way to make us feel welcome.

Our coaching staff is excited to welcome all of the new and returning Scouts players. The 2016 – 2017 season will be a promising one for the J.V. team. We have some strong foundational returning Scouts players and very talented new Scouts players.

Adjusting to high school hockey and new expectations can sometimes be a challenge for new players. Our J.V. team will focus on three things. As a team we refer to these as L.T.R.

1) Leadership - Good sportsmanship and leadership is expected from all members of the team on and off the ice. 2) Teamwork - Look out for each other. Bring the team up not down. 3) Results - Not measured by wins and losses alone. More importantly results are measured by: playing with intensity and competing, playing the prescribed hockey system, playing a physical and clean game.

These principles are not just applicable to hockey development. While we look forward to watching each player develop and grow throughout the season, our is to have a lasting impact on the development of these young men as hockey players, individuals, and as members of the community.

Let’s play some HOCKEY and GO SCOUTS !

8 9 SENIOR CLASS OF 2017 #13 MAC PFALZER #20 ALEX RIEDEL My hockey career started when I was 3 years old. Growing up playing this sport has taught me many valuable lessons. Although I’ve had my ups and downs while playing Just over a decade ago, my hockey career started. Eight of those years I was this sport, looking back I wouldn’t change a thing. I would like to thank my mother for driving me to the hundreds of games and practices that I have attended (as well dependent on my parents (thanks Mama and Papa!) Since then, I’ve played as redressing me when my equipment didn’t ‘FEEL RIGHT’]. I would also like to thank my father for building ice rinks in the back yard so that I could get to where I am various levels and with people from all over the North Shore. However, nothing today. I would also like to thank all of my coaches throughout the years. They’ve taught me how to work hard and how to be a team player. I wouldn’t be who I am today ever compared to my time playing for Lake Forest. It was always my dream to play with all my friends together on one team. This organization made that a reality. It both on the ice and off without them. will be a sad day when the season comes to a close, but I’ve met and become closer with many guys that really made the time here an incredible experience. I’ve had #23 RYAN GATTARI fun for every moment of it (despite the cold of the tree lot days - four years of that I started playing hockey when I was two. I played with the Falcons until sophomore year when I came to play for LFHS. It was paramount decision of my life. I have had will be enough for me.) And for those reasons, I am grateful and proud to say that a more delightful time with the Scouts than any other team. Hockey has always been a part of my life and I couldn’t imagine life without it. My favorite part of playing for I played Scout Hockey. LFHS is the fans we get to support the team at the college. The team is like a big family and I have made bonds stronger than super glue with people I wouldn’t normally encounter. Charlie Sullivan, Connor Knop, Peter Lincoln, Coach Murph, Coach Johnathan, and the always alluring Coach Joe are all mentors in life on and off the ice. The best memories I have in my hockey career have come with the scouts. Thank You to all the people that make Scout hockey a possibility, like Carl Kitzerow. People like him are the reason Scout hockey is the best program in the high school and the reason that I enjoy playing for the Scouts so much. #SHREKISLOVE #39 HENRY HODGE I could hardly begin to explain the person I am today without remembering the years I have spent in frigid, damp and oddly smelling ice rinks. Hockey is a special sport, #5 SAM YAUCH and Scout Hockey is a special organization. I do not know many other teams with the same level of coaching commitment, team camaraderie and spirit as I have seen in My adventure in hockey began long before Iphones when times were simpler. I was the ripe age of 2. ‘Twas an infant back then, young and naive, open to a very large Scout Hockey. I would personally like to thank all the dedicated coaches who have shared with me their love for the game, all the teammates who have challenged me to world. Hockey was the first sport I truly connected with. I had an immediate love and passion for the game. Ever since I first stepped foot on the ice I have always better myself both on and off the ice, and especially all the parents who have made this whole organization possible. Good luck to all the future Scouts! wanted to lace up the good ‘ole pond rockets, grab my favorite twig and listen to cuts I make in the ice. I started playing hockey in Michigan then moved on to play AA travel hockey for 7 years in Cleveland, then continued my hockey career to LFHS. I made varsity as a freshman when I first moved here, with my older brother Max, when he was a senior. This team has taught me to lead and work hard through tough times. I would like to thank my teamates and coaches for making it such #8 JACK BARBOUR a positive experience for me. I hope to continue playing some sort of hockey in the future whether that be club hockey or beer league hockey. Hockey has been a huge part of my life. I have been blessed to play a few different places and I’m really happy that I get to play for Lake Forest my senior year and represent my school. The teammates and relationships I’ve made over the years have been a big part of my life. I am grateful for the many memories, many coaches and friends I’ve made as they all helped make me into the person I am today. Being able to play hockey has definitely been a gift that I’m grateful for. #2 TEDDY STEIN I got into hockey accidentally. My parents never played, and didn’t even watch it on TV. But when I was six, my neighbor (a huge hockey fan) saw me rollerblading and told my parents they should get me on skates. The next week we were at Centennial Ice Rink in Highland Park, and so began my hockey career. We became a “hockey #22 JEFF KITZEROW family”. All three of my younger siblings followed in my footsteps, and two are still playing. I played for the Falcons for seven years, and then moved to the Scouts when From the Learn to Skate program Sunday mornings at Lake Forest College, to my time playing for the Scouts, hockey has always been an important aspect of my childhood. I was a Freshman. I played JV Freshman and Sophomore year, and Varsity Junior and Senior year. Through my hockey years I’ve made great friends, and learned many It has taught me many lessons such as discipline, the importance of hard work, but most importantly to have fun with my friends. As my last season of competitive hockey important lessons. I feel privileged to have been able to play this great sport, which I wouldn’t have been able to do without my parents. Thanks Mom & Dad! approaches, I would like to thank all of my coaches, teammates, and my parents for the time and effort they have given throughout my years at the rink. #25 THOMAS HAYES #48 JACK WILDMAN Hockey has always been a major part of my life. The sport has shown me some of the best experiences of my life and some of the most difficult. Its significance to me is I started playing hockey at the Winter Club of Lake Forest around the age of five years old. I always enjoyed the game but never really felt very passionate about it until not something that can easily be articulated. It is simply something that I have had with me for my entire coherent life. I do not know what life is like without hockey as I started playing for the Scouts. My freshman year, I gained a new appreciation for the game. Throughout my years in the Scout Hockey program, I have learned how to a part of it. My experience playing for Scout Hockey has been quite the journey. When I first joined the program I had no idea what to expect, and honestly, that has not work hard, communicate with others and to stick with the details. Leaving the program is going to be bittersweet, but I am looking forward to the season that lies ahead. changed. Whether it be the unique forms of player development, or the young men who filled the rosters, Scout Hockey is definitely something extraordinary. I would also like to thank my parents and all of the coaches who I have worked with these past few years. Your time and endless support has been greatly appreciated. #11 KOHLTON PERKINS #37 JAKE HARDY When I was very young, I remember thinking that everyone had some physical activity that they just couldn’t get enough of. I decided I too wanted my activity, “my sport” I started playing hockey at a young age and for the longest time it was just me going out to the Lake Bluff pond everyday in the winter, something I looked forward to football, baseball, soccer, they were fun, and then I found hockey, and I was hooked. Over the years, I have skated with many people who I now call my brothers, but it’s every year. Hockey has helped define me as a person, and I will always remember and cherish the amazing experiences I have had in my four years of playing for the different since playing for the high school as a Scout. These last four years I have met both coaches and players who have had a great impact on me making these the best Scouts. From playing house league, all the way to the present day, there is no one I can thank more than my parents, who year after year have dedicated an immense years of my hockey career. There are a lot of awesome sports to choose from but I wouldn’t give up this experience or hockey for anything. amount of time and effort to furthering me as an athlete and a young man. Without their support, I wouldn’t be who I am today. I also want to thank the great coaches I have had while playing for the Scouts. Each and every one of them has had a huge impact on my development as a player and person and I have learned lessons that will follow me for the rest of my life. #43 EDDIE JACKS It’s been a great four years here at Lake Forest High School. I have made so many fond memories during this time. But the most special memories I have of high school are with my hockey team. We laugh, cry, win, lose, speak up, or shut up together as a whole. And that’s what high school hockey is all about. Working as a whole. Thank #46 LUKE ABBATTISTA you to all of my supportive teammates and coaches who have guided me through these four amazing years. Hockey has been a part of my life for as long as I can remember. From the first time my dad laced up my skates, I knew that hockey was the sport for me. Hockey to me isn’t just a game, it’s a way of life, an all around game changer in the story of my life. When I came to the Scout Hockey program as a freshman I underwent a major transformation as a hockey player and as a person. Under Coach Weber my freshman and sophomore years I learned that anything is possible as long as you have the #17 KENNY KAZARIAN right mindset and you work hard. This is a lesson that will not only stick with me through my senior year but through the course of my life. I’ll miss shooting pucks in I started skating when I was 3 years old going to west park and just trying to stay on my feet. I eventually joined a team and played Falcons through middle school. House Murph’s backyard, 6:00 am hill runs, locker room dances, Ann Arbor, O’C, Joe, and Murph; most of all I’ll miss my teammates. I still haven’t come to terms with the fact league was pretty lit especially because you knew all the kids you were playing against. Then, when I was a freshman, I started playing for the Scouts and it was a great that this is my last season of high school hockey, but I know that I will look back and cherish the memories and friends that Scout Hockey has provided to me. decision. I have had a lot of fun and enjoyed meeting new people. I’m looking forward to having a fun senior season. #3 PATRICK KRIDER #1 AJ CARANI The first time i put on skates I was 3 years old and just learning to skate over at Lake Forest College. Through the years I began to develope and started to play travel I first laced them up when I was in third grade. I instantly fell in love with the sport. Once I found out my cousin Geoff was a goalie it was all I aspired to. In the first Pee hockey for the falcons during first grade. All the way from first grade to junior year I stayed at the falcons and made some great memories, but nothing beats playing for Wee season practice my dream came true. The coach asked for volunteers for a goalie and my hand instantly shot up. Through all of my experience with the Falcons, my your school with all your classmates. Although I only played one year of scouts hockey it was some of the most fun i’ve ever had with the game. Nothing compares to home goal was to one day be a varsity goalie for the Lake Forest Scouts Hockey Club. I hope this will not be the end, that hockey will always be a part of my life. The camaraderie games at the college when all your friends are there supporting you. with my team mates has made a lasting impression on me and one that will carry me ahead in life. 10 11 VARSITY GOLD
