www.museumofboulder.org 303.449.3464 2018 ANNUAL REPORT OUR MISSION The Museum of Boulder provides engaging educational experiences for people to explore the continuing history of the Boulder region. The Museum collects, preserves, and presents Boulder history in order to connect residents and visitors to the past, provide a context for the present, and inspire a vision for the future.

OUR VISION The Museum of Boulder provides engaging experiences that celebrate the spirit of Boulder. Through dynamic exhibits and captivating programs, visitors discover the stories of our past, explore the creativity and innovation of the present, and envision the future of our community. The Museum of Boulder is a catalyst for conversation and a welcoming place in which to explore, discover, reflect, and have fun. Dear Friends,

2018 was an epic year for the Museum of Boulder. When I look back at all we accomplished in that one year, I am astounded. The Museum of Boulder was born in 2018 and it has already become a gem for the community of Boulder. This Annual Report tells of the many amazing programs and exhibits that we presented to the public during the year, but what the public does not see is what went on behind the scenes — the formidable amount of planning, organizing and back breaking work that the staff undertook to move the Museum from the Harbeck House on the Hill into the new facility on Broadway. This involved completing construction, moving offices and cleaning out the Harbeck House, the home of the Museum for more than 30 years. Thousands of artifacts were carefully moved to our collections facility, files upon files were sorted, as were 30 years of exhibits. Wow —I still don’t know how we did this with our small staff.

The Grand Opening of the new Museum of Boulder in May was a day to celebrate. With the doors finally open, we were able to actually see what we had been dreaming about for so many years. People, young and old, families and friends, exploring the new exhibits, sharing in new discoveries and learning new things. This is why we work here, this is what it is all about.

The hard work was not done, however. We still had our permanent exhibition, The Boulder Experience, to complete. So, for another six months we focused on this interactive gallery that opened in November. Now, Boulder has a place that tells the story of our community, from the very early years up to today. A place of inspiration and contemplation. A place for us all.

I have been so very fortunate to have had the opportunity to lead this organization for the past 18 years. I am so proud of this Museum and so grateful to the dedicated staff, Board, volunteers and donors who made it happen. I have come to appreciate what a truly unique community we live in and it has been an honor be a part of creating a museum that will provide opportunities to explore and discover for generations to come.

Warm regards, Nancy Geyer EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR & CEO LETTER FROM THE BOARD PRESIDENT

A Year of Progress and Changes What a year it has been for the Museum! Thanks to the hard work of our dedicated Staff, the Board of Trustees, our Members, and our many Donors, the new Museum had its Grand Opening in May. Highlights included the DaVinci exhibit and several other traveling exhibits, followed in November with the opening of the Boulder Experience Gallery. The new building has exceeded all of our expectations for its grace and beauty.

We are now well into our first full year of operation in the new building with an eye toward many opportunities and challenges. We continue to need your help to finish fundraising for the construction of the museum and to assure sustainable operations into the future.

And I would be very remiss if I did not thank Nancy Geyer for her 18 years of service with the Museum. Nancy has seen us through the transition from the small and gracious location at the Harbeck House on University Hill to our new location in the heart of downtown. Though Nancy has retired, we will look for her continued support as we enter this new phase of the Museum’s history.

Please join me in celebrating the Museum of Boulder: past, present and future. Ken Wilson PRESIDENT, BOARD OF TRUSTEES In Recognition of Service The Museum extends a wholehearted “thank you” to the amazing teen and college volunteers who have kept the Google Garage humming with the sounds of laser cutters and virtual reality since opening our doors at the new facility. The Museum of Boulder wishes to thank Google Garage volunteers Jackson Moody, Eliott Dormody, Dusk Olvera, Sarah Eckhardt, Dale Boyer, Owen Hushka, Cole Schoenberg, Catie He, Carmen Harris, James Chinnery, Justin Hager, Bella Gibb, Rose Jou, Emerson Hall, Sri Pattanaik, John Kowalski, and others, for their time, service and commitment to expertise. 2018 BOARD OF TRUSTEES Ken Wilson PRESIDENT Kathleen Spear VICE PRESIDENT Kaye Howe PAST PRESIDENT Dan Johnson & Jake Puzio TREASURERS Linda Haertling SECRETARY
