Dave Roberts Dodgers Workout Day Easier Said Than Done MLB World Series: Dodgers vs Red Sox Thursday, October 25, 2018 Dave Roberts Dodgers Workout Day easier said than done. But that's as simply as you can Q. Looking back, there was a lot of pressure, put it, and that's the best way to go about it. And I obviously, back in the ALCS Game 7. How does know that's echoed in our clubhouse. down this pressure compare? Is it similar, Q. What did Walker show you specifically in Game different, not at all? DAVE ROBERTS: Understanding and appreciating that 7 of the NLCS, if anything, that he hadn't before? it's the World Series, it's still not a do or die like Game DAVE ROBERTS: In a situation where you take a 7, it was a do-or-die situation. So I know that even just young player in an elimination game, where he's had getting back home feels different. It's going to be certain obstacles or challenges or big games that he's exciting tomorrow. It's going to be energetic. pitched this year and different markers and he's responded, but up until this point that was the biggest So a little different but the key is we've still got to go out one. To be in a hostile, really boisterous crowd in there and play a good baseball game. Milwaukee and for him to keep his composure and to execute pitches speaks a lot to him, not only to compete but to eliminate kind of the outside noise and Q. The Cardinals team you faced in '04 with the Red still stay within a game plan. Sox, they talked about how that series was over in a blink of an eye; they couldn't catch their breath So it just shows a lot of moxie. because of the momentum the Red Sox had. I wonder as a player how you saw that go, and now Q. What kind of lift do you think Eovaldi has given on the other side of it, how do you stop it? the Red Sox out of the bullpen this series? And DAVE ROBERTS: As a player in 2004 we definitely felt are you kind of curious how Alex is going to use that. And it began in the ALCS, and there was just a him the rest of the series? momentum and a feeling. And guys are playing well. DAVE ROBERTS: It's going to be interesting how he's So it just didn't really matter who we were playing, used the rest of the series. But as far as a guy that's where we were playing. We were just all kind of got such a big arm and can pitch in a setup role and synced up. get the ball to Kimbrel, obviously that's big because any type of momentum that you want to gain, with Right now on the other side as far as manager and potentially a lesser arm as far as stuff, using Eovaldi being down 2-0, I think tomorrow obviously is an obviously makes our task a little bit tougher. important game. We're at home to stop the momentum. I think that they got some big hits when Q. Hill is going Game 4, right? they needed them. But to compare those two Red Sox DAVE ROBERTS: Correct. teams at that point, offensively I think that we were really swinging the bats one through nine then, as I can recall. Q. And how would you compare and contrast the qualities of your righty lineup versus your lefty But for us right now, it's a game that we really need to lineup? win. DAVE ROBERTS: I think we have to look at it more micro. It was a different roster before the trade Q. Another '04 tie-in, you know firsthand being deadline. And so I think that if you look at the entirety down 2-0 guarantee anything. Does that inject you of the season, the lefty, essentially the lineup against right-handed pitching has fared much better. But if you with any confidence and do you share that with look at the more recency, I think it's very comparable. players at all? DAVE ROBERTS: I think it's something where I have So against left-handed pitching I think I recall in lived it and experienced being down in that situation September we led the National League in production and still coming back. And I think the big takeaway is and however you want to classify that in the National you can't win four games in one night. So just the League. So that's a bigger sample of more recency. focus-on-one-game-at-a-time mentality. I know it's Rev #1 by #178 at 2018-10-25 23:44:00 GMT page 1 of 2 Yesterday we ran into a guy that threw the ball well. I do you have leading off tomorrow? And what do thought David, he has a lot of confidence and we were you look off specifically for your leadoff hitter? kind of putting some hits together that one inning, but DAVE ROBERTS: Joc will lead off tomorrow. Just got he bounced back and made pitches and got them like to get on base. I just felt that Dozier with the history 90 pitches. I thought our approach against Sale, I think with the two pitchers that we faced prior, I liked him to get him out after four-plus is a really good thing. setting up in Fenway Park with the short porch in left. And I just trust that he can go out there and give you a We're not swinging the bats as far as the right-handers good at-bat. right now against the lefty lineup. Tomorrow you'll see a different lineup. But it's a fair comp to both the left- So tomorrow Joc, against the right-handed pitcher, Joc handers and right-handed lineup with the recency. is at the top of the order quite a bit for us, so that's what we're going to do tomorrow. Q. Going to the quality of at-bats, I wonder, your last 16 hitters went down last night. Credit to the Red Sox bullpen. Are you seeing some things in your hitters, especially during that stretch, where maybe some frustration is creeping in? Are guys squeezing the bat handle too tight? What was your take on that? DAVE ROBERTS: I think there's a little bit -- it's a combo. I would say that looking back at the game and the video, just Joe Kelly in particular was making really good pitches. And then you've got two innings of a pen of Kimbrel and two innings of Eovaldi. So you've got stuff. You've got being down. You've got unfamiliarity. So there's a lot of things that lead into why we aren't getting hits against those guys. So I do think that the more you see a guy, the better opportunity you get. But it's not from lack of preparation, but until you get in the batter's box and see how a change moves, or a slider, how much depth the curveball has and the arm slot, it's different. Our guys are gathering information. We've got to do our best to get on the starter tomorrow. We expect Walker to go out there and pitch well and keep us in the game, and offensively we've got to go out there and get a lead. Q. Other than lack of a DH, is there a difference for you guys playing at Dodger Stadium than playing at Fenway? DAVE ROBERTS: Well, obviously the DH is one thing. I think the climate is a little different. There's a familiarity, obviously, for us. There's been a lot of talk of outfield depth; we're very familiar with the ballpark. And the National League game, having Walker take an at-bat, where Rick can handle the bat. But it's the style. Obviously this is what we're used to. But, again, baseball is baseball. You've still got to go out there and pitch it, catch it and hit it. And we've got to do that better than them. Q. Before Brian led off in back-to-back games to start the series, that had been a rotating spot. Who Rev #1 by #178 at 2018-10-25 23:44:00 GMT page 2 of 2.

The Boston Red Sox Thursday, November 1, 2018 * The Boston Globe Why the Red Sox feel good about David Price going forward Alex Speier David Price came to Fenway Park ready to celebrate the Red Sox’ 2018 championship season, and hoping to do it again sometime in the next four years. Price had the right to opt out of the final four years and $127 million of the record-setting seven-year, $217 million deal he signed with the Red Sox after the 2015 season by midnight on Wednesday. However, as he basked in the afterglow of his first World Series title, the lefthander said that he would not leave the Red Sox. “I’m opting in. I’m not going anywhere. I want to win here. We did that this year and I want to do it again,” Price said minutes before boarding a duck boat. “There wasn’t any reconsideration on my part ever. I came here to win. We did that this year and that was very special, and now I want to do it again.” Red Sox principal owner (and Globe owner) John Henry was pleased with the decision. While industry opinion was nearly unanimous that Price wouldn’t have been able to make as much money on the open market as he will over the duration of his Red Sox deal, Henry said that the team wasn’t certain of the pitcher’s decision until he informed the club. “[Boston is] a tough town in many ways. I think [the opt-out] was there because it gave him an opportunity to see if he wanted to spend [all seven years here],” said Henry.

SoCal vs. NoCal? No Contest The Best Rivalry in Sports Heats Up By Chris Brown and Casey Shearer It s the latter half of September, which means the fall breezes are blowing and the leaves are changing. The smell of hot-dogs and stale beer is in the air; everybody wants peanuts and Crackerjacks; children run home from school and head to the sandlot. All of which are symptoms of pennant fever. Or at least they should be. But as we look around, nobody seems to care about baseball at all. In what is usually the most exciting time of the year for baseball fans, that special excitement is somehow absent. Even as Mark McGwire and Ken Griffey Jr. chase Babe Ruth and Roger Maris, and Larry Walker chases the triple crown, something is missing: What's missing, kosher hot-dogs? A players? strike? Roy Hobbs? Steve Howe and his crack? The Cubbies? Has baseball become so unpopular so as to lose the interest of all its fans? Is it just that baseball lacks that type of hype, flashy color and big-money that basketball purports or the bone crushing thrills of football? No, what's missing are those heated races that lead to a bad case of pennant fever. With less than two weeks remaining in the season, the playoff picture is all but set in stone. In the American League, Baltimore owns the East, Cleveland looks to have the Central wrapped up, Seattle should win the West barring a major collapse, and the Bronx Bombers have sewn up the wild card.

Woods Associate Professor Graduate Student Idaho State University Idaho State University [email protected] [email protected] Relevant Rhetoric, Vol. 12 (2021): How Scansis Functions On January 13, 2020 Major League Baseball (MLB) Commissioner, Robert D. Manfred Jr., released investigation findings confirming that the Houston Astros illegally used a video camera system to electronically steal signs during the 2017 regular season and postseason, in which they won the World Series, and early in the 2018 regular season. The findings exposed what has been referred to as “one of the biggest scandals in Major League Baseball history.”1 MLB eventually fined the organization $5 million and the Astros were forced to forfeit their first and second round draft picks in 2020 and 2021. The team’s owner, Jim Crane, also fired the general manager, Jeff Luhnow, and manager, A. J. Hinch. In this paper we analyze Major League Baseball’s Houston Astros organizational rhetoric and crisis response efforts after the organization was found guilty of cheating. Analysis spans from the beginning of the crisis on November 12, 2019 through March 12, 2020 and items analyzed include two Houston Astro press conferences and news stories published across 20 media outlets. By viewing the crisis as a “scansis,” a unique type of crisis and scandal characterized by moral outrage, the authors hope to further the
