  • Providence Falls to Comets in Third Night of Home Stand
PROVIDENCE FALLS TO COMETS IN THIRD NIGHT OF HOME STAND Providence, RI - Despite outshooting the Comets 35-30, the Providence Bruins fell to Utica by a score of 5-3. The P-Bruins home point streak end at 22 games. The Providence Bruins picked up 3 of a possible 6 points over the three game home stand this weekend. Utica’s Higgins scored twice in the first to give the Comets at 2-0 lead. The second goal was scored on the power play, with Chris Casto in the box for holding. Tommy Cross dropped the gloves with Archibald and scored the takedown and the matching 5 minute major for fighting. Brandon DeFazio got the P-Bruins on the board when he buried a rebound on Bachman’s doorstep with just 1.2 seconds left to play in the first to cut Utica’s lead to 2-1. Frankie Vatrano and Matt Irwin picked up the helpers. Utica capitalized on another power play 5:58 into the third. Higgins notched his third of the night to put the Comets up 3-1. Two more fights broke out in the second, with Ferlin and Blidh dropping the gloves against Kenins and Bancks respectively. Vatrano scored his 31st of the season at the tail end of the second. Khokhlachev threaded the needle to Czarnik, who immediately sent the puck to Vatrano who sniped high stick side on Bachman. The P-Bruins came out with energy in the third and scored a quick goal to tie it at 3-3. Vatrano battled in the corner and sent the puck to Khokhlachev in front of the net who buried it 5 hole.

  • Press Clips September 17, 2019
Buffalo Sabres Daily Press Clips September 17, 2019 Dylan Cozens gets his welcome to the NHL, Sabres win in Ralph Krueger's debut By Lance Lysowski The Buffalo News September 16, 2019 UNIVERSITY PARK, PA. — When the emotional rollercoaster finally ended Monday night, Ralph Krueger stood in front of his players inside the Buffalo Sabres' dressing room and expressed a blend of excitement and relief. "Said to the guys after the game, ‘It was good to get that one down,'" Krueger told reporters, his voice hoarse following his first game as an NHL coach since April 27, 2013. Krueger's return did not go exactly as planned. Despite having only three days to prepare, the Sabres made Krueger's vision a reality by using a fast-and-furious style of play to build a three-goal lead through two periods. However, the Sabres relinquished the lead and needed Jack Eichel's overtime goal with eight seconds remaining to win Krueger's debut, 5-4, against the Pittsburgh Penguins at Penn State's Pegula Ice Arena. The game provided some semblance of how Krueger wants the Sabres to play in 2019-20 and will give his coaching staff some lessons to teach to players. Krueger wasn't the only person in the Sabres' dressing room getting acclimated, either. Dylan Cozens, the 18- year-old center drafted seventh overall in June, made his exhibition debut against NHL competition. Though Cozens did not record a point, he also expressed confidence in his ability to learn from his introduction. “Obviously it’s very fast and guys are so strong and just getting used to the quickness of it," he said afterward.

Goal Prevention 2004 a review of goaltending and team defense including a study of the quality of a hockey ’shots allowed Copyright Alan Ryder 2004 Goal Prevention 2004 Page 2 Introduction I recently completed an assessment of “”in the NHL for the 2002-03 “”season (http://www.HockeyAnalytics.com/Research.htm). That study revealed that the quality of shots allowed varied significantly from team to team and was not well correlated with the number of shots allowed on goal. The consequence of that study was an improved ability to assess the goal prevention performance of teams and their goaltenders. This paper applies the same methods to the analysis of the 2003-04 “”season, focusing more on the results than the method. Shot Quality In summary, the approach used to assess the quality of shots allowed by a team is: 1. Collect, from NHL game event logs, the relevant data on each shot. 2. Analyze the goal probabilities for each shooting circumstance. In my analysis I separated certain “”from “”shots and studied the probability of a goal given the shot type, the ’distance and the on-ice situation (power play vs other). 3. Build a model of goal probabilities that relies on the measured circumstance. 4. Apply the model to the shot data for the defensive team in question for the season. For each shot, determine its goal probability. 5. Determine Expected Goals: EG = the sum of the goal probabilities for each shot. 6. Neutralize the variation in the number of shots on goal by calculating Normalized Expected Goals (NEG) = EG x League Average Shots / Shots 7.
