The Cruising Flotilla held its Annual Season Review at Southport Yacht Club on the Western Deck. 70 cruisers enjoyed a great 3 course meal and drinks. Tony O’Keefe from Tony O’Keefe Financial presented the Flotilla Leader with a great sound system which we can use onshore on suitable cruises. It has been a success with everyone being able to hear any announcements and am sure it will be used for many impromptu karaoke nights as well. We thank Tony and Anne Maria for their sponsorship. Farewell Yassmina - Yass has decided to follow her Article by Joe Sabin dreams of living and working overseas and now resides in Dubai. We wish her every success and hope Club Coach she keeps in touch with her adventures, she will be missed. I would like to introduce myself, Joe Sabin, as the new Club Coach. As a qualified sailing instructor, and having been a member and sailed with the Club for many years. My main focus will be improving the enjoyment and love of the sport, as well as the sailing skills needed to compete in racing while still maintaining a fun and safe environment for our youth sailors. Big things that are going to be pushed coming into our new season and our new year are going to be boat knowledge, boat maintenance, team camaraderie and parent participation. My door is always open and I welcome feedback from both squad members and parents. The Academy course dates have been released for the next few months, and are available by using our online booking system – link below. This includes our popular school holiday camps in December and January, and both Adult Keelboat Crewing and Skippering courses. As well as our Junior Basics course which aims to move kids into their own boat and kick start their sailing endeavours. This is a great next step for kids who have done a few FunSail sessions, and would like to take that next step forward and hopefully join our development squad down a SYC Hollywell. The Club has recently purchased a new Nacra 4.5 catamaran. The Adult Start Catamaran Sailing course is perfect for those new to the sport, who wish to learn how to sail, or even for those wishing to refresh their sailing skills. It is also a great way to get into some racing as well as the parents of young SYC sailors who would like to get into a boat they can sail with their child. Our certified and highly experienced instructors teach this course following Yachting Australia’s Learn to Sail 1 and 2 Training. www.southportyachtclub.com.au/sailing/sailing- academy/ Our Sailing Academy continues to grow in numbers with 42 participants now in the development squad. We welcome all our new members for Term 4. We have had several sailors travel to interstate regattas with some excellent results. The 2016 Squad program will be available shortly. Our Junior Mentors have been a huge asset to the Club, and their participation is vital to the smooth running of the Club racing and assistance to the academy. We have seen a great increase in the number of competitors for our Sunday green fleet, which is great to see our young sailors out on the water getting into the racing and taking full advantage of the on water coaching provided by the SYC coaches, mentors and volunteers. There have also been some big improvements seen in our open fleet sailors with awesome racing each week. It is great to see how passionate our youth sailors are about this great sport. We also have many young sailors travelling away over the Christmas period so we are wishing them the best of luck and safe travels.

Southport Yacht Club | iN SYnC | 25 2015 qld etchells state championships

Over the Labour Day long weekend, Southport Yacht Club was once again host to the 2015 Queensland Etchells State Championships. The weekend was witness to hot competition including former World and Australian Champions, and Olympic team member, Jake Lilley. Principle Race Officers, Ross and Kevin Wilson, returned to SYC for the event, certainly proving their immeasurable skills, by conducting a great regatta and having all singing their praises once more. The large number of whales and their proximity to the racers, also meant that the 2015 Etchells Queensland State Championship would be one to remember for a long time. Congratulations to Peter McNeill, Josh Torpy and David Gleadhill on IRIS III, who sailed their way into first place in race 6 and won the overall championships. Following in second was CIAO, skippered by Douglas McGain with crew members Stuart Clark and Michael O’Brien, and finishing in third place FIFTEEN + with skipper David Clark and crew members Mick Slinn, Mark Langford and Sean ORourke. I was part of a team of ten Australian Optimist Sailors competing at this regatta and I was proud to qualify and race in the Gold Fleet and therefore achieved my goal. The racing was in light winds and very challenging, I finished 57th out of 120 sailors. The Australian Team was coached and supported by AIODA Coach, Rob Brewer. Qatar was a great cultural and learning experience and I enjoyed every moment of my two weeks abroad. I was able to present the SYC Burgee to the Qatar Sailing and Rowing Federation, this made me feel very proud as it was well received. I wish to take the opportunity to thank SYC for their support and coaching throughout the year. In the coming months there are many large Optimist Regattas for the SYC Optimist Fleet to compete in, these include the NZ North Island Championships in which Riley Cameron and I will be representing SYC on the 13th to the 15th of November, 2015. Many SYC Optimist Sailors will be travelling to Sail Melbourne, Sail Sydney, and the AIODA Optimist Nationals being held at Georges River 16 foot Sailing Club in Sydney in January, 2016. Sailors representing SYC at these Regattas include, Adelaide Pullen, Sam Martland, Orla Amos, Hudson McKee, Torin Mitchell, Charlie Piacun, Riley Cameron, Blake Wilson, and myself. Lee-way, owned Cheers, Ray McMahon and skippered by Tony Horkings won its division at Airlie Beach Race Week with other SYC Ray McMahon boats figuring in the placings of their divisions. Thursday Twilight Representative Hamilton Island Race Week had 5 SYC boats in it and although we didn’t win any divisions, all of the SYC boats were extremely competitive in their divisions.

Back home on the GC, the fleet have really hooked into our race season with all guns blazing. We’ve had different winners each week with some of last seasons winners being out-shone!!!! A few skippers have purchased bigger, better, faster boats. Others have modified their boats and purchased new sails, all in an effort to get that little bit extra out of their boats. What that really means is that we’re getting more professional as racers...... and our results at the national regattas is showing it!!!

Our Twilight sailors have now turned their attentions to our Offshore races and these races are showing unprecedented increases in entrants. That’s largely due to David Hows and Drew Jones (our Offshore organisers) who are doing a fabulous job. new south wales youth championships Well done to Tom Wright who came away with 1st place at the NSW Youth Champsionships.
