Benoit Paire claimed the fifth top-10 win of his career (now 5-18) against top seed Stan Wawrinka to book his place in the semi-finals. The No.8 seed, whose previous best performance in Marseille was a second-round appearance in 2015 (l. to Wawrinka), is the last remaining Frenchman in either draw. He will face No. 4 seed Marin Cilic, the 2011 semi-finalist (l. to Soderling) and 2014 US Open champion, playing in Marseille for the first time in five years. The Croatian is playing his first semi-final of 2016 and first since winning the Moscow title last October (d. Bautista Agut). Italy’s Damiano Torella will umpire the match. In the second semi-final, No. 2 seed Tomas Berdych will meet unseeded Nick Kyrgios for the second time in their careers and in 2016, after Berdych won their third-round encounter at the Australian Open. Egypt’s Adel Mour will umpire the match. Like Cilic, Berdych is playing in Marseille for the first time since reaching the final (2013, l. to Tsonga). The Czech is playing his second semi-final of 2016 (Doha, l. to eventual champion and world No. 1 Djokovic). Like Paire, debutant Kyrgios collected his fifth career top- 10 win by beating No. 3 seed and world No. 10 Gasquet in the quarters (now 5-11). The 20-year-old also reached the semi-finals in the doubles draw w/Gabashvili, losing to Erlich & Fleming on Friday. The Israeli-British duo will face No. 2 seeds Pavic & Venus in Sunday’s final. On Friday at St. Jakobshalle, David Goffin gets a third crack at Basel’s own Roger Federer, whose posters were plastered on his bedroom wall as a youngster. Federer defeated Goffin 62 62 in last year’s Basel final after beating the Belgian in a four-set, fourth-round match at 2012 Roland Garros. For Goffin, 24, to upset Federer, 34, he must overcome a series of statistical hurdles (see chart below). In other quarter-final action, World No. 7 Rafael Nadal and World No. 13 Marin Cilic meet for the first time in more than four years. Cilic is 0-10 against Top 10 players since winning the 2014 US Open title. Another Croat, 6- foot-11 Ivo Karlovic, challenges 11th-ranked Richard Gasquet for the right to play Cilic or Nadal in the semi-finals. Gasquet has his back against the wall in Basel, needing a title this week to keep his hopes alive of qualifying for the Barclays ATP World Tour Finals in London Nov.
