MAY 2015

DIRECTOR’S MESSAGE .... Bob Geiger Our April 11 excursion to Irvington, VA, in the Northern Neck, to see Mary Brill's beautiful collection of classic Cadillacs, was a great success. The display also included several and Alan Merkel's 1930 V16 Phaeton. Twelve of us made the trip, bringing along three of our own collector to add to the show. We were joined by 20 members of the Memory Lane Club from that area. Afterwards, we all enjoyed a country buffet at the nearby Pilot House Restaurant. We were having so much fun, we decided to not hold a monthly business meeting, except to express our great appreciation to Mary Brill and our Tour Director, Chris Harris-Evans for putting it all together. This why there are no meeting minutes below. See you at our May 12, (Second Tuesday), dinner meeting at the Smithfield Station, 7 pm.

VPCCC REPORT.....Don Baker The April meeting for the Virginia Peninsula Club Council (VPCCC) was held at 7 pm on April 21st at Wynne Ford/Volvo in Hampton. There were 12 members in attendance, no speaker. President Charlie Daniels gave an after the show report on the VA & Custom Car Show that was held at the Hampton Roads Convention Center on April 11-12. Feedback from those, that attended the show, was given to Charlie to pass on to Brad Hoffman of Live Wire Media. There was some discussion on moving the council meeting to Thomas Nelson Community College (TNCC) starting in May. The day and time will stay the same, 4th Wednesday of the month at 7:00pm. It was decided that we would give Wynne Ford a plaque to thank them for letting us use their location.

Automobile Related Summaries ……. Escalade Review by Ezra Dyer , New York Times (condensed version) The Escalade, Cadillac's big SUV, doesn't sell like it did in 2004-07, when it sold in numbers of 60,000 per year. In the past two years the numbers are about 12,000 per year. The 2015 redesign involves improvements like direct fuel injection and variable valve timing to the 6.2 liter V8, a fold flat 3rd row of seats, automatic braking, (which works in forward and reverse as it applies the brakes if you are getting too close too quickly), an 8 speed , and a gadget charger that doesn't require cords. This Escalade is 6,000 lbs of steel that gets 21 mpg highway and 14 mpg city and can go 0 - 60 mph in 6 seconds, and it can tow 8,300 lbs. It is priced at a range of $74,000 to $90,000, depending on the options you choose. The Escalade is still Cadillac's full size, rear wheel drive, big time luxury vehicle for the well to do.

HUMOR CORNER ...... A RIDE IN A TAXI ...... A woman and her twelve-year old son were riding in a taxi in Detroit. It was raining and all the prostitutes were standing under awnings. "Mom", said the boy, "what are all those women doing? "They're waiting for their husbands to get off work," she replied. The taxi driver turns around and says, "Geez lady, why don't you tell him the truth? They're hookers, boy! They have sex with men for money." The little boy's eyes get wide and he says, "Is that true Mom?" His mother, glaring at the driver, answers in the affirmative. After a few minutes, the kid asks, "Mom if those women have babies, what happens to them?" "Most of them become taxi drivers," she said.

BIRTH CONTROL FOR GRANDMA The doctor, that had been seeing an 80 year old woman for the most of her life, finally retired. At her next checkup, the new doctor told her to bring a list of all medications that had been prescribed for her. As the young doctor was looking through these, his eyes grew wide as he realized Grandma had a prescription for birth control pills..... "Mrs. Smith, do you realize these are birth control pills?" "Yes, they help me sleep at night." "Mrs. Smith, I assure you there is absolutely NOTHING in these that could possibly help you sleep!" She reached out and patted the young doctor's knee ..... "Yes dear, I know that. But every morning, I grind one up and mix it in the glass of orange juice that my 16 year old granddaughter drinks .... and, believe me,...... it definitely helps me sleep at night."

3 BIOLOGY EXAM This is straight from Scotland. Students in an advanced biology class were taking their mid-term exam. The last question was, "Name seven advantages of Mother's Milk. The question is worth 70 points or none at all. One student, in particular, was hard put to think of seven advantages. However, he wrote: 1) It is the perfect formula for the child. 2) It provides immunity against several diseases. 3) It is always the right temperature. 4) It is inexpensive. 5) It bonds the child to the mother, and vice versa. 6) It is always available as needed. And then the student was stuck. Finally, in desperation, just before the bell rang indicating the end of the test, ..... he wrote: 7) It comes in two attractive containers and it's high enough off the ground where the cat can't get it...... He got an A.
